Will I notice a dramatic difference from 12 feet away from the screen? What other benefits can I expect?
I wouldn't recommend going from a 5070 to the 500M, unless you had a good place to retire the 5070 to, besides at 12' you should be upgrading to the 600M!
Anyway, unless you're a black level fanatic, or would really want 1080P or some other feature, the difference between terrific picture quality and even more terrific picture quality is pretty marginal in the big picture, and not what I'd call dramatic.
I went from 6070 to the 600M because we wanted a new TV for the bedroom and I managed to convince my wife that the 6070 wouldn't be too large for our MBR and that this was a great opportunity to upgrade the FR TV. I think the 600M is clearly better, but my wife's comment was more of a shrug ... as she thinks they both look great.
I consider that a win, though.
Keep in mind some folks upgrade their computers when a new CPU comes out that's 20%-50% faster ... whereas I tend to wait until they're at least 2x faster; but I suppose given how Microsoft has bogged down these poor machines, some wouldn't even call 2x very dramatic.
Another thing mind is that the 500M/600M can be calibrated a lot more thoroughly than the 5070, so if you do choose to go with calibration the improvements from doing so will be much better realized.
Now, going from a 57" Sony RPTV to the 6070 ... that was dramatic.
