Best TVs for HTPC gamer...looking for 1:1 and if possible decent scaling options.

I currently have a 61 Samsung DLP 1080p, but it has wobulation and poor scaling options, so PC gaming isn't as sharp as it could be. I especially find the text to be hard on my eyes. I had an old 50" TV that looked like a large monitor and the text was sharp as good as my 24" Dell monitor.

Can anyone recommend a TV that could basically be considered a large monitor with no wobulation, true 1:1 pixels and if possible scaling options, although ATI has great scaling options, I may want to have the flexibility to choose Nvidia in my next upgrade cycle, but they have horrific GPU scaling support.

Thanks!

You'll might want to consider a TV that offers 3D gaming support, I know that I will (as quite a few games offer it now with a nvidia card, including games like Fallout 3, GRID and Street Fighter IV, etc). Some are DLP, others are LCD, and a few are Plasma. I think you will be happier with either the LCD/Plasma or if you have money to burn, the Laser RPTVs from Mitsubishi sound nice.

If you want more info on how a specific model is, I think it's always good to check its specific thread in the TV forums.

If you're wanting to do alot of PC gaming on your TV, then you need to stay away from any projection technology. They overscan 2-5%, forcing you to underscan the image to fit important game information, since games tend to use the entire screen. But when you underscan the image, that is when you lose 1:1 pixel and your text becomes blurry.

Any decent quality LCD would be fine. They can do 1:1 pixel and there is no over scanning of the image. I'd not go with a plasma, as they're still more likely to burn-in than a LCD. And gaming HUDs are constant.

I own a Samsung DLP LED 67" myself. It's excellent for video quality, one of the best I would say, but it clearly loses a little bit of that quality when I have to underscan the TV for the little bit of PC gaming I do on it. Text is still clear enough and not bad on the eyes, however. Might be the difference between the newer LED DLP. With consoles, it isn't an issue, as they are coded to deal with overscanning by not placing important information in the corners of the screen.

I've been thinking about the LCDs, but do any exist that are 60 inch? Still...I am tempted to think that the loss of 6 inches is worth 1:1 pixel mapping. Will have to stop by Best Buy...Curious how big of a deal 240Hz is vs. 120Hz.

I use a Panasonic plasma (800u series) for HTPC gaming. It has 1:1 pixel mapping support for 1080i and 1080p signals, as well as a very nice looking and workable "game" mode. I've played games with a HUD for hours with no bad effects. The level of image retention has never approached being noticeable during viewing.

I can't speak for scaling quality, as I use a DVDO Edge video processor for that. One thing to consider is that many 1080p plasmas have non-defeatable overscan for signals that are not 1080i/p.

It's not, and for some games, not even possible. Such as RTS, MMO or Sim games. They'll place game access icons in the very corners of the screen. You won't even be able to see them if you're on a screen that is overscanning.

The only workaround, to keep 1:1, is set the TV in 1:1 mode (called just-scan for Samsung) and play the game at a lower resolution. The TV will not upscale the image and you'll just have black bars on all 4 sides.

nvidia's drivers (when working properly) will resize to any HDTV desktop. Yes it's not 1:1 as you say, but if you want a cheap, larger solution like the newer Mitsubishi RPTVs, that's really the only way to go. I've seen the new 64" one on sale at Bestbuy.com for $999 already.

But of course, LCD tvs are best, and the newer ones with the 3D emitter glasses inputs are specifically made for gaming so you'd think they'd be a pretty good choice.
