Agreed, I always suggest 4GB now (either 4 x 1GB or 2 x 2GB better DDR2-1066/8500).

I run 4GB's and use the 3GB PAE Switch. Great for audio buffers when streaming large amount of content.

I am waiting for maturity in my apps before I dive in, but I would love to see how the 785G works with 8GB's and Windows 7 64bit.
Actually XP64/Vista would be O.K. too.

FYI for Windows 7 64bit users, Microsoft updated my Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Ethernet driver, and now I cannot connect. I had to roll back to the previous level, 7.2.1127.2008. YMMV.

What's the current status on the drivers for this board? (I'll be installing Win7-32) It's only been a couple weeks, so I wouldn't expect too much progress - and yet there seems to be a lot of people using this board for new builds. Are all systems go?

Also, is there a recommended order for installing drivers, utilities, etc.?

Lastly, will any media player app (that supports Blu-Ray playback) send LPCM over HDMI? Or am I limited to certain ones? (I was planning to use Media Player Classic Home Cinema.)

I wish I had a dollar for every time MS update broke one of my devices. Make that $100K. (MS can afford it! )

I am interested in the answer to this question as well, since the PS I'll be using doesn't have an 8 pin 12V connector either.

cghebert, no one has answered this question on the two threads I posted it on. I have not yet ordered this board because my bundled PSU only has the 4-pin ATX connector. Of course, on most of the boards I have worked with, this is usually not an issue unless the CPU needs a lot of power, say while overclocking. In the other thread Rene mentioned that the psu where this problem occurred might have been defective.

Before pulling the trigger on this board, I'm waiting for someone to confirm that they are using the board with only the 4-pin atx connected to the 3-4,7-8 pins as you indicated in your post. Considering that this is the perfect board for my needs, I might pull the trigger anyways!

Am I the only person that's extremely excited by the LPCM over HDMI? I mean assuming it's the same 7.1Ch 192kHz/24Bit LPCM that graced the other HD4000 cards. This really is the perfect HTPC board.

Before I saw this today I was just about ready to buy a Giga 780G board and a separate HD4550 JUST for LPCM over HDMI. But this should be cheaper, cooler and easier, so I can wait.

4-pin to 8-pin power adapters are available (got one at Fry's).

I am, too, and I think most everyone using this board chose it largely for that reason. I'm just not sure about the driver status with regard to making this work. I'm also unclear about when LPCM output is available. (Is it always available? Does it depend on the media player? Does it depend on the BR disc???)

I can confirm that I now have it working with only a 4-pin connector. I disposed of the PSU that came with my crappy NSK2480 case.

Thanks! I didn't think there would be a problem, but it is certainly good to have confirmation.

might be a dumb question, but what pdf?

EDIT: does anybody know what the 3H is? UD i think somebody mentioned was Ultra Durable. (nvm, the 3h is an atx mobo and can do ddr1333. also has 6/0 sata/esata when the micro's have 5/1 sata/esata) SOLVED

k, can't figure out the difference between US2H and UD2H. only diff seems 10 bux. (nvm, UD2H is am3 while us2h is am2/am2+/am3) SOLVED

also, do you guys think this is a finished mobo? i'm building a htpc and would be nice to order one of these to start going on it, its all i'm missing is a good mobo.

Well, it sure looks like it to me. Mine was packaged in a production-like manner, just like the any other Gigabyte board I ever bought. And, mine is running perfectly so far. However, I believe the drivers are not fully cooked yet, especially the video, but I suspect this will happen soon. The board is not even announced yet on the Gigabyte site, so I am not sure why I was able to buy it, but I think all this will settle down in a few weeks/months.

Since I was building a machine right now, I choose to be on the bleeding edge, and so far I think I made the right decision. If you require completely stable drivers etc, then look elsewhere, or wait a bit on this one.

I think the 785G will be the standard (as soon as it is announced :-)) for low cost boards.

Please note the HDMI audio output only supports AC3, DTS and 2-channel-LPCM formats.

I see this statement in both MA785GM and MA785G manuals. Apparently incorrect.

I'm thinking about this bad boy. 2 PCI x1 slots.

There's also the Gigabyte DDR3 and MSI DDR3 785g boards on newegg this morning also. ASUS is also coming out with one specifically for media center purposes.

The Biostar 785G is also available...I was thinking of going with that one except that it doesn't have HDMI. So, unless the audio can go from DVI-HDMI, which I know is possible in some cases, I'll probably go with one of the Gigabytes once some reviews come out.

I've bought one ECS board and had nothing but problems with it...just a warning. Others might have had different experiences.

@ current (Saturday 8/1) NE prices the Biostar is a worse value compared to the Gigabyte, for the reasons you mentioned. I'm sure that this will alll shift around as NE and the mfgs monkey /compete with pricing.

My Biostar 790GX had NO problem muxing the audio info on it's DVI connector. I switched over the IGP-connected monitor from analog to an HDMI LCD. The LCD monitor came with a HDMI to DVI cable: as soon as I plugged that into my IGP's DVI port my analog sound dissapeared, because the HDMI/DVI audio became active. I had to putz with the control panel to get the sound back out to the discrete speakers, instead of the LCD monitor's tiny speakers.

Well, after a month of total hell, the driver release yesterday is working fine in all areas so far, at least under Win7 Ultimate 64, yes, even the Avivo 64-bit codecs are there and SSD drive performance matches the Intel chipsets finally. I do not know if I will have time to test non-commercial video playback packages by Monday, but all features like VA de-interlacing, 1080P/24, and others are working properly under the latest versions of Power DVD 9 Ultra and TMT 3.0. The same holds true for Windows Media Center.

Thanks for the update and all your hard work, we are all certainly looking forward to the full review.
Are the updated drivers available to the public yet?

I have just completed my build and it's not powering on. I don't know if I have another defective PS that came with the NSK2480. I'll do some more troubleshooting though. Hopefully that's not the case.

Nevermind. I got it working. So no need to worry. It's just me not paying attention. No need to worry if anyone is interested on purchasing the case. Also, it's so quiet!

Wow, that's great news! Thanks for posting!

i'm gonna get the GA-MA785GM-US2H mobo. i have 2 questions:

1) the COOLER MASTER GeminII S will fit on it, right?

2) i have an old AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Windsor . i'm assuming this should be enough for htpc? is there a compelling reason to upgrade this cpu?

Yes.

Enough for progressive HD video contents. A HT 3.0 processor is better for others.

I finally did my install and everything is fine. I'm running Windows 7 at the moment but I'm wondering how to update the drivers? I got mine from the amd site but i don't know if I'm doing it right.

I download and install the Catalyst 9.7. It says the install is finished and all but I can't see CCC to adjust my display settings. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.
If you look at the release notes for 9.7 you'll notice that the 4200 family isn't supported yet. You'll have to wait for the 9.8 (beta) drivers.
