I did my US2H build last night. Not much to report on the physical build, other than things are getting even tighter in my space-challenged case (an old QPack). This is because I put in a slightly physically larger power supply (OCZ 700W), than I had before. Also, the front panel audio block must be further from the front than my old board, and I could not make the cable confortably reach, so since I do not use these jacks anyway, I did not hook it up.
I am running the AMD Phenom II X3 720 processor with stock cooler. Also, 6MB of DDR2 800 ram, and two SATA drives.
I powered on and it came up fine to BIOS, level F2 already installed. I changed very little, including enabling AHCI (which I never had on for the previous motherboard). I let it boot up my existing Windows 7 64bit RC load. It would not boot. I turned off AHCI, and it booted fine. Windows found a ton of new devices and requested a reboot and I did. It was running fine. I then loaded the latest chipset driver and VGA driver from the Gigabyte FTP site, and the EasyTune from the CD. Still running just fine. I will do a clean install of Windows 7 64 Pro in the fall when it ships.
So, I just had to try it... I went into MIT in the BIOS and set ACC to Auto and EC Firmware to Hybrid, all to attempt to unlock the 4th core. It worked!!! Windows 7 reports that I now have an "AMD Phenom II X4 20"!!! So, I ran Windows 7 for awhile and things were fine.
Since this CPU is a Black Edition, I then set the multiplier to 15x, to give me a 3.01GHz quad core processor for 119 bucks, and ran Prime95 64bit for 17 minutes (8 iterations of the 1024K test), and it ran with no errors. I know this is not an exhaustive test, but I guess it is good enough for now.
So, I am a lucky, happy camper! I will report later if any instabilities are encountered.
One concern is that with the stock cooler, the CPU idles at 46C, and during Prime95 it peeked at 72C (with the CPU fan running about 6500rpm). So, I think I will get a better cooler someday.
Question: Is anyone using a non-stock cooler? I have a height restriction of about 80mm, so this eliminates many coolers for me. So I was thinking one of the smaller "orb" coolers maybe, if they are not too wide to touch the RAM chips etc.
