Prior to the recent opening of his well-received motion picture Public Enemies, director Michael Mann went back into the telecine facility to personally supervise a new high-definition transfer of Heat, the crime classic that starred powerhouse duo Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.


Special Features:

No word on audio specs but...YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really hope they do this release some justice. This used to be my demo disc on DVD - the bank scene is incredible. Here's hoping to this being my new blu-ray demo disc in the future!

Hell yes!

Looks like there should be very little to complain about since Mann is hip to HD. I hope he made them do a 24bit audio encode(if it had a 24bit track).

As a side note - Public Enemies should be a new demo disc, picture is perfect throughout and the sound is pretty close to perfect.

Can retire my laserdisc finally! If Warner gives us lower audio quality than on the laserdisc, I am going to be really really really ticked off.

I am convined that Warner intentionally screws up highly desirable titles so they can double or triple dip, but on undesirable ones they do a perfect job. Amadeus is one such example - excellent PQ/AQ, but they didn't give us the Oscar winning cut.

I strongly disagree with this statement. The interpolation that was done on Publlic Enemies is gross.

Its not interpolation, but open shutter.

With a filmcamera the shutters must be closed so a new frame can be pulled behind the lens.

With digital cameras you shoot with 1/48 shutter to simulate the shutterspeed of filmcamera.

But you can also shoot with open shutters, that gives a more fluid movement. Micheal Mann has previosly done this in Collateral and Miami Vice.

But I dont like this look either.

Ah, thanks for the lesson! The only way I knew how to describe it was interpolation (since it mimics what those LCDs are doing now).

I haven't seen Miami Vice, but I don't remember the effect being as pronounced in Collateral as it was in Public Enemies.

Nonetheless, I will definitely be double-dipping for Heat on Blu-Ray. It's such a fantastic movie, I'd hate to think of watching it on DVD ever again.

Director's supervise the transfer, but they DO NOT take part in encoding of the BD. That is when DVNR is usually added and the transfer is compressed for Blu-Ray. THAT is the problem.

I never worry about DNR with Warner, just a filtered starved crappy VC-1 transfer

+1, although the bank scene was my demo on VHS I never found the fullbit DTS version up here so I never bought it on DVD.

To be fair almost all Warner catalogs that don't use old crappy dvd masters don't have any of the encoding issues the new titles do. So this one should be safe.

If this were six months ago I'd worry Warner would slap a Dolby 5.1 track on this, but I guess now all the catalogue titles are getting TrueHD, too.
