So setting audio output to PCM seems to fix this then?

I use a Tivo HD as my cable box and source of video-on-demand (netflix/amazon) and it has a "Dolby Digital to PCM" setting in the audio menu.

Sorry, my expertise is in other areas than audio/video stuff. I'm no audiophile/videophile but I do notice stuff like audio sync issues.

Thanks, I'd like to be able to put the 47LH40 back on the list for consideration.

Freddie: Hello. Welcome to LG Electronics! How may I provide you with excellent service today?
javier: Hello. I am having a problem on many of my channels coming from my Comcast DVR box. The audio is behind the video by .25 seconds or so.
javier: Using HDMI straight to the TV from the Comcast box
Freddie: Let me see what I can do to assist you with this.
Freddie: Are you at your tv now?
javier: yes
Freddie: I have 10 questions that are needed to be answered. This .25 second delay will result in a service call to make your tv to not have a delay in audio from video.
Freddie: 1) Name of Cable Company or Satellite Provider
javier: Comcast Digital Cable
Freddie: 2) Complete Product Code (example: 42LG30-UA.AUSJVM)
Freddie: This is found on the rear of the TV, Mr. Javier
javier: 55LH40-UA.AUSVLJR
Freddie: Thank you
Freddie: 3) What is the connection when lip sync occurred?
javier: HDMI
Freddie: 4) If with Cable box, what is the cable box model no. and brand name?
javier: Motorola DCH3416
Freddie: Thank you
Freddie: 5) How much is the lip sync? 1/2 sec? 1 seconds? Or more?
javier: i think about 1/2 or less
Freddie: 6) Lip sync on particular channel or all channels?
javier: Not all channels, but many HD channels and Comcast OnDemand
Freddie: 7) Does picture come in first then audio lag occurs?
javier: yes
Freddie: ) Does customer have other unit or TV he can compare with?
javier: yes, i don't have this issue on a 32" Visio
Freddie: 9) Can customer bypass cable box and test with RF cable or use component to DVD player?
javier: I don't have this problem when I run HDMI from DVD. I don't have component cables to test with.
Freddie: 10) What is the s/w version--to get this press and hold down the menu on the TV and the menu on the remote--the main menu will appear-continue to hold down the menu buttons and a pass code will appear --enter 0000--then another menu will show up this is where you can get the s/w version from (If the software does not comes using the first attempt, please try this (mostly 2009 models) Menu, Option, Enter, Left arrow key, 1,1,1,1,1,1, and host diagnostics will appear and the software is listed on the left side. Some units it is 6 Ones and others is 8 Ones. This applies to most of the new models.
Freddie: Sorry for the long one!!
Freddie: Sorry for the occurrence.
javier: 4.30.00(0.1.54.97) I had to use the newer method
Freddie: Thank you, Mr. ------
Freddie: What is your phone number please and your street address with zip code please? This is for the servicer
javier: There's no way to fix this over the phone or on my own? My schedule is very hard to accommodate. My Number is ------- and my address -----------
javier: I read online that you can send me USB flash drive with a fix.
Freddie: That is to some degree accurate but at some point
Freddie: we started sending service on the LH models.
Freddie: Our apologies.
javier: This is very frustrating, you understand.
Freddie: Do you know the purchase date please? and where did you buy it.
Freddie: You better believe it. I do understand and my apologies.
Freddie: This is one great tv
javier: I bought it at a store called BrandsMart USA on 9/23/09. It is still under store warranty. I am tempted to bring it back and buy a Samsung.
Freddie: Thank you for the date of purchase.
Freddie: I cannot make up your mind for you but we do appreciate your time here.
Freddie: Someone will call you soon
javier: When is "soon"? A minute, hour, day, week?
Freddie: Probably more than a week
javier: Really? I'm sorry, that is unacceptable.
javier: Can you mail the fix like you used to?
Freddie: No, unfortunately it is not able to be done in that way. I can file for you a voice of customer stating your dissatisfaction
javier: That doesn't sound like it will help me at all. So are they going to call me to schedule a service or have you already done that?
Freddie: Definitely, Mr ------ we will be calling you at the number you provided.
javier: So when they call, they will schedule it. That means the service call will probably be what, a month from now?
Freddie: Within a day or so.
javier: Please log that I am VERY unhappy with this solution. I will be posting the contents of our conversation to the technical blogs for HD enthusiasts so that people with the same problem (and there are LOTS of them) will know what to expect.
javier: I will also be contacting other enthusiasts to tell them to avoid LG televisions in this class if they want to avoid the lip sync issue.
javier: It's shame that so many LG's have this problem and this is the best response the company came come up with.
Freddie: C09102268037 I have done so in this customer number, this is the voice of customer stating you could return it for a samsung and you find the repair time unacceptable and I will copy and paste the last 5:14 comment as well.
javier: Sounds good. I look forward to the service call. If I decide to trade in the TV, I'll let them know when they call.
Freddie: I have amended the note for the voice of customer and this will be read and acted upon
Freddie: Thank you very much, Mr ------

I hope they still call me because it'll be a pain to return this to the store.

I have my cable box set to L-PCM and still have the audio sync issue. I called LG and they said I am still on the list to be contacted. They said it should be soon.

MOST of my channels are perfect. Again, this is when going from the cable box to the receiver using an optical cable. And from the CB to the TV with HDMI. I don't use the TV speakers.

But there are some channels (HDT and TLCD) where the sound comes first - picture is late.

LG blames it on the older cable boxes are used but its funny that new TV's of other models don't have this issue. If I didn't get a smoking good deal on this TV, I would return and get a Samsung.

Frys.com has the LG47LH40 on sale today for $800 shipped. I'm really debating getting it. One one hand, I have a 42" Sharp Aquos that is only 3 years old, but I'd like to have a second HDTV to put in the master bedroom. I'm one of those freaks that like the 120hz and Motion Processing, so this TV is a pretty good candidate for what I want in a HDTV. I'm just debating whether or not I should wait and see if I can find later on. I'm still kind of miffed that I didn't wait to get my LCD when 120hz models came out a few months later.

if i recall, you were complaining about weird artefacts around moving objects, to get rid of that, you don't need to worry about 120hz, just turning off the trumotion (or whatever it's called) is good.

Were you able to ever get that flash drive and did it fix the issue?

Well, nevermind, it went up to $899 while I was deliberating buying it. I guess I'll pass until I see a bit better deal.

The only changes I made was to up the backlight by 10 and change the temperature to 'cool' (they recommend "warm" which makes white too yellow"). It is set at Expert 2 and I love this setting. I do brighten it up for hockey and usually use the preset Sports option.

Thanks Veccster,

I missed that post. I will let her know and thanks for the help.

Just got off with LG Tech support, the rep "Brian" was actually pretty rude about the "lip sync" matter, and said that there is nothing he can do and that I have to wait 2 weeks to hear from a technician.

He did give me some useful information though regarding the 2009 vs 2008 model of the 42LH40. Also, if you can't seem to access the secret menu it means you have a 2009 model and someone has to come to your house to fix the lip sync issue:

Quote:

What is the software version? To get this press and hold down the menu on the TV and the menu on the remote, the main menu will appear, continue to hold down the menu buttons and a pass code will appear, enter 0000, then another menu will show up and this is where you can get the software versionIf the software does not come up using the first attempt, please try this (most 2009 models) Menu, options, enter, left arrow key, enter 1,1,1,1,1,1, and host diagnostics will appear and the software is listed on the left side. Some units it is 6 number ones and other 8 number ones. This applies to most of the new models. For 2009 models you will receive service and for 2008 models you will receive a usb thumb drive in the mail.

Oh well, he did assure that the tech will fix the problem and that it is well known at LG...just wish I didn't have to wait so long and they didn't have to be so rude about it.
zea, my guy wasn't so rude, although I doubt his name is really "Freddie". I'm going to give the tech a hard time (after he fixes the unit) and find out why they stopped shipping the fix to people. I'll also update with the version of my firmware once it's finished. I suspect it will be version 4.30.1.
I spoke to LG last night as well. He asked if I knew WHY it was a problem. Curious, I said "nope". He went on to explain that the LG TV is so advanced that the software cannot communicate with the out-dated hardware currently on the market .

I asked why everyone with this TV has this problem and he said that LG has superior software to most or all of the tuners on the market. I told him my cable box was brand new and had a manufacture date of July 2009 and he said it was still using the older software.

He seemed to actually believe what he was saying too! I thanked him for the conceded explanation and asked that he just FIX MY DAMN TV!

Good to hear, can't wait for your results. I too, will post the results, if and ever the tech decides to call to make an appointment.

I will be happy once again if this finally fixes the problem that shouldn't have existed in the first place.

He could be right. How else can you explain sources other than cable boxes don't have this problem.
Originally called LG about a week and a half ago about the lip synch issue. The phone support person said LG should contact me about sending out a tech within 10 - 14 days. Called today to check the status of the issue. The phone support person said that the issue had been submitted to the proper department and that I would need to wait on them to contact me.

Seems like LG tells a lot of people that it will be two weeks. But I rarely hear anyone say that the LG tech did the update and the problem was solved.

Has anyone ever had this issue resolved?

not true, i have issues with coax cable coming straight into my tv (no cable box) as well as issues with PS3 via hdmi.

based on everything, (idiotic responses from customer service, the way they're not handling the lip sync issue, crappy trumotion etc.) i'll probably never buy an LG again.

wonder if this is why Fry's just did a firesale on 47LH50 & 47LH40's starting today. $900 & $800 respectively. Was online & B&M, looks like online went out of stock since they're no longer showing up.

I thought it's because these are obsolete models with the new SL models coming out.

Hmm, didn't know that. I hadn't seen any in the big box stores, so had no idea.

If the xxLH40's are at the end of the product cycle, I'm even more concerned about LG fixing the audio sync issue and keeping it fixed. I like the LH40's but the issue has me spooked since it seems far less common on other brands like Samsung.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, the blur/fuzz around objects has been BUGGING me! It's annoying. But I just did a quick check on my TV during the game, and the "Tru motion" is the 120 HZ. Here's a picture to see it. So, I'll just keep it off. It seems to be better.

AVSForum has been awesome for helping me getting into the service menu for another TV (My almost 2-year old 47" Olevia that I use as a monitor, which is just great as a monitor with P-in-P to watch TV at the same time - Not an important feature, just nice.).

I have been looking to purchase the 55LH40. Last night, I hesitated (for who knows why), and missed out on a freaking awesome deal that was only there for a few hours.

So mad...

Now, to be sure that I don't hesitate again, I would appreciate some firm comments on:

1. Is lipsync a real issue and can it be fixed with the service menu? All the talks about it scare me a bit - and hence my hesitation last night. Some people say they have lipsync issues using HDMI and others say it's fine and no issues with HDMI. So inconsistent...

2. Is it possible for LCD HDTV's to have dead pixels, and if so, what can you as far as getting it exchanged? I mean, that's a big TV to be shipping back and forth for exchange.

I have a 47" LCD and a 42" LCD HDTVs and none has dead pixels. I have never seen a HDTV with any dead pixels, but I figured I would ask.

Thank you!!

Funny, you ask! I just got my 55LH41 about 3 weeks ago and i noticed a dead pixel. If i bought at Costco or an electronics store i would be able to return it (within 90 days Costco, 30 days elesewhere) but i bought it from a furniture store (Leon's in Canada) and they have no return policy for electronics. They told me they need an official report from a sevice tech. So i will do that and see how it goes....
Yeah...I beat that price by $50 (including tax) by getting it at my local Sears. Was VERY pleased to score such a deal. Anyway, I have no dead pixels but have only had it for 4 weeks.

I've been all over the place with audio sync issues too. It almost seems that some days are worse than others. And actually, my CRT TV connected via coax is doing it right now. I'll be calling comcast (again) tonight. I am also on the waiting list to have LG come out and update my TV.
My neighbor just bought a samsung 46LNB750 and also has audio sync issues when connecting via HDMI. He has a Direct TV HD box.

Does it bother me....not enough that I would return this TV or spend $800 more for a similar Samsung. If a channel is bad, I can just switch over to component cables and it's gone. Also, switching my cable box to PCM only fixed A LOT. There are only a couple channels / programs that are off now.

If you can score the 55LH40 for around the price you posted, get it. You won't be disappointed. My neighbor got a good deal on his 46" 750 model samsung and still paid $1500. I paid $300 less and got a 55"!

You still have a 1yr manufacturers warranty. Try that route.
My 42LH40 has a dead pixel but it's 100% unnoticeable when watching TV/Movie or playing a game. The only time you can barely see it is when the menu is on.

As for questions about the service panel, it is only accessible for the 2009 versions. If you can access the panel, then you have a 2008 version, and LG will send you a flash drive to update your firmware. (If you have a2009 version, then a tech has to come update it for you). This has been confirmed by LG and is a bit of a waste of time/resources in my opinion.

I'm still waiting on my call, but if I don't get it in another 1-2 weeks I'm going to file a complaint with the BBB.
I purchased the 42LH40 on Friday at Fry's for $599.99 until they were gone....I couldn't believe that price. It was a deal to good to pass up. I love it and have no issues with the TV. The picture is unreal. I had a little lip sync issue while using the HDMI but switched over to component cables and the lips sync seems to be back to normal and working perfect. You can't beat this TV for the price.

Thanks for folks' assistance. I dropped by Fry's on Saturday to look at them again. Turns out Fry's also had an in-store unadvertised sale on the Samsung LN46B630 at $999 with free Samsung Bluray player (BDP1600). Ended up going with the Samsung.

FYI - I just got a deal on a 47LH40 at Amazon.com for $1049 including shipping and tax, which makes me happy.

What made me unhappy was I didn't find this thread until after I'd ordered it.

Being concerned that I'll be put on a multi-week waiting list for the audio sync firmware fix, I just contacted LG Support. They told me that the newly manufactured shipping sets should already have the fix installed. Now of course that doesn't mean that I won't receive an older set from inventory but it does hopefully indicate that LG has a handle on the problem. Unless LG Support was just kicking the problem and me down the road...

I'll look up the software version when I receive the set Tuesday, see if it is an updated version and post the results then.
I just got my LG47LH40 today and set it up - I too got it on the Fry's.com sale...

My PS3 doesn't seem to be having any lip sync issues but I don't have my HD cable box setup yet... I plan on grabbing one for this TV tomorrow from Comcast. Any specific box I should ask for?

Also, does anyone have calibration settings for PS3?

Thanks,

Mike
