Official JTR speaker thread - Page 365

Well, I had put on a little demo last night for one of my wifes doc partners in her practice, who has a full 7 channel Wilson Maxx 3 setup with 4 watchdogs subs, all powered by Mac gear. Although I've never seen his room or gear, he's extremely wealthy and just looking up some prices, I'm sure his room with projector is in the millions..... biggrin.gif

Anywho, My wife always goes on at work about how we watch movies and she gets scared from the noises tongue.gif so he has always wanted to see my system as hes never seen a JTR or heard all my subs. He's extremely friendly and knows audio quite well. We sat down in my HT and he brought some CD's and listened to all types of crap I'd never listen to lol, like dave mathews, jazz and old guy garbage that I hate but will admit, sounded freaking amazing on the Noesis and full JTR setup. He never really let on if he was impressed or anything (well except for the subs, his face looked terrified hahahah). We concluded with various movie clips from all the usual suspects (wotw, hulk etc) and had a few beers and they left with a thank you and a $400 bottle of wine that tasted like, what I'd assume a grapes balls would taste like lol, I'm not a wine fan BTW.....

Then comes about an hour ago, my wife comes home and was talking to his wife at their work (she is a doc there as well) and his wife was saying how much he enjoyed the demo but was was sulking after they got home. She asked why and his exact words were " Thats the first time, I've actually experienced a movie....." He was astounded on how good the Noesis were with his favorite music and the movies but was extra amazed at how the system as a whole handled movies. He said at reference in his room, he can hear breakup in the wilsons and we went 13 dB's over reference just to show how they handle the power. He flat out told my wife before he left for home, that he'd rather watch a movie on our room than his....... How cool is that!!! well, I was pretty happy anyways biggrin.gif

Ha, "how cool is that" was pretty much exactly what I was thinking as I read through your post before I read you say the same words.

I was thinking that because it made me think about how I've been into this hobby since the mid 90's (well, actually since the early 80's when I would go to any and every friends house that had any type of stereo setup whatsoever since it was better than what I had - which was nothing). I've never had a lot of money but have read so many speaker reviews, audio forums, etc. and for years day dreamed what it would be like to experience audio like what you describe that doctor having. I always assumed you had to be super rich to get the kind of sound I craved. Then 2 and a half years ago I meet a bunch of local KC AVS guys and find out about JTR and going to GTG's and the rest is history.

Awsome post Nathan. smile.gif

lol, ya wine is wasted on me lol. I'm a beer drinker but I find that I'm a snooty beer drinker, I really like top shelf beers rather than beer you get in 7-11. I can completely understand why people love wine and I'm ok with white but the dry red wine. Blah! terrible biggrin.gif

I've got season tickets to the Winnipeg Jets and the first home game is on Friday and we are going over to his place before the game to have a few and I will get to check out his system!!!!!!! I know the watchdog subs are turds as I've heard them a bunch of time, they look awesome but the performance is garbage for what you pay for them. I'm super curious how it all sounds in his full custom room!

Good question. Well, I plan to have 3 LMS 5400 as custom down-firing end table subwoofers(7 cu.ft.). 3 SpeakerPower plate amps would be more expensive than the rack mount. I could have gone with 2 plate amps and ran 2 subs off 1 plate amp but that would have required some non-standard wiring between subs, easily doable but I didn't want to do that. The rack mount version will allow me to easily wire up to 4 LMS 5400s at a solid 2000 watts a piece, which should be fine with the 7 cu.ft enclosures. If I ever do go crazy and buy more than 4 LMS 5400s, they would be in 3 dual-opposed cabinets and I'd use the rack mount version to drive the front 4 and get a plate amp to drive the rear 2 LMS 5400s. Finally, I could be wrong but I think the rack mount would be more valuable and easier to sell in the future.

Now, I chose Speaker Power as I wanted a powerful, quality amplifier that was quiet and had auto-off that used little power. Since the SpeakerPower amp is a sub amp, I don't have to worry about it having a non-defeatable HPF or anything else that certain pro amps have issues with. I don't have to lose my warranty by modifying the fans and don't have to finagle an auto-off solution. Also, the tests that I read about the SpeakerPower amps showed that it has the longest high power transients of just about any other sub amp. With all that said, I realize that similar performance may have been able to be had for cheaper but I didn't want to deal with those things. And it isn't like SpeakerPower is an over-priced fancy amp. It is a quality, American-made amp that has a good reputation, which is why Seaton and JTR among others use them in their subs.

LOL, ya I'm thinking his system must be amazing with music and but those watchdog subs are so weak and his room is 26 x 34 x 12, so it's pretty freaking big. I'm really looking forward to seeing his sim2 lumis 3d solo projector..... I'm hoping the new sony 500es will be what I hope and maybe do a major upgrade to 4K.... When it hits 12K I'd be in but until then, I'll have to wait.

Ok I'm not sure you could get more off topic than this but you guys are cool, so...For those of you that are married or have been, did you have dancing at your wedding?
Yes. We went cheap on our wedding and my brother in law manned a boom box playing CDs. Didn't go as well as we would have liked but people had fun and that was the most important thing. If you do have music at your wedding reception, make sure to pick out the song you two will dance to and make multiple copies of it given to several people. Let's just say, it took a bit to find the song that he was supposed to play as our first dance. smile.gif.

AND CONGRATS MAN!

I can honestly say that I've never gone to a wedding without having dancing happening. And I've been to probably 20 weddings over the last 6-7 years.

Has anyone actually gone to a wedding where there wasn't any dancing?

Gotcha, thanks for the explanation. I also like speakerpower and it will most likely be my amp of choice if i ever need one, for the exact reasons you just explained. My preference is for the silent plate amps though since I'm a very big stickler for silent electronics.

Man, I love reading these testaments. I just had my cousin in today to listen to a few concert tracks:

1. Dido - White Flag (concert disc)

he was like, 'omg... so, crystal clear.. you can even hear her breath'...

I must say, Dido's is now one of my favorite demo scenes... she sounds incredible on the Noesis... almost mesmerizing and goosebumps all over...

2. Nightingale (the track on Yanni's Live concert)... Nightinggale is a russion opera singer.. i guess.. damn, if you want to hear female vocals... nothing will demonstrates the high notes a woman can sing as well as the Noesis..

3. Elisa - Dancing, (this one is my all time favorite demo... jaws will drop... enuff said..).

Recently I had a guy who does home theater installations for people in my country (he's a Cedia member), and his clients will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their systems... when he heard my speakers, he was speechless.. he did not say a word... i think he's impressed...

I'm looking forward to your review of his system.

Since these speakers are very efficient, a lot of wattage isn't really required. They will hit reference with just a few watts. That being said, a good quality amp is always a good idea. Some folks on here feed them 100 watts via a receiver with great results, others (such as myself) use a dedicated amp.

It is probably advisable that you do not get a high powered amp for these speakers. If you saw the linked youtube video (above) of a single JTR Triple 8 and Growler sub, that demonstration was powered by a very powerful amp. No one needs that kind of power indoors because if you have it, the temptation to use it will be strong.

That said, it is really fun to feel (and that is the right word) that much undistorted sound wash over you in an enclosed space... smile.gif

That is a nice sized room for an all Noesis 212HT 7.2 system and a few S2's. It all can be financed by the sale of 2 of the Watchdogs subs and, he can keep the Wilsons and the 2 remaining Watchdogs for his new dedicated music room. smile.gif
