Jeff,

For music, which is better. The coax in the T12 or the T8/Q8?

Louis

What is the impact on the FR?

I was interested in using tube amps for music, but the big SS behemoths for movies.
A 10-watt single-ended should drive the T12's to LOUD! levels and still have
some headroom. Okay, the 1812 Overture with real cannons might be a bit much
for tubes...maybe.

Jeff: 'warm and laid back' versus what? (bright and forward, as in your face) or something else?

Perhaps I can assist. The standard crossover is cocaine, the new crossover is marijuana Does that help?

So... the standard crossover suppresses your appetite and the new crossover means you should install a mini-fridge next to your listening position?
lol nice!
JTR speakers have a flat, neutral sound. Not forward but not laid back.

I was going to go with the lamborghini vs the bentley
post #1120 of 8265
Thanks Jeff - I figured they were neutral, but when you mentioned
laid back and warm as an option, what comes to mind is that they
must be forward and not warm (bright).

Lambo and Bentley - Volkswagen, by another name - though, I'll not
snub my nose at a Bugatti; personally, an early Bentley S2 with the razor
running boards.

I'll stay with the 'standard' xover - neutral is good; though, Mr. B. Idol
does get in your face...it's a nice day....

Agreed but a bad room can make a flat speaker sound harsh. I'll let audyssey roll off my highs ha. Old age and hearing loss can do the same and is free but I'm not there...Yet
post #1122 of 8265
I guess people could always get the normal version and roll off the highs in their EQ if they don't like it.

I'm sure I will be doing some EQ, its pretty rare for a speaker to match your tastes perfectly out of the box.

I put an order on a 2010 triple 12 just before the 25% sale date and it was a blind buy or shall I say a deaf buy since I have never heard them first hand. My decision was based on the great reviews posted on this forum and hopefully have made the right decision. Febuary 5th is expected delivery and I already called in sick for that day. Thanks for the wonderful info and review posts! Keep em coming!

What speakers are you currently using?

Be prepared for dynamics that will bring the experience to a whole new level

I (and many others) are in the same boat! We have all placed "deaf" orders and judging by the comments/reviews I doubt any of us will be disappointed.

I look forward to hearing these and will post a review (hopefully glowing )

Congrats!
I've noticed over the few months of owning the triple 8's, they have definitely smoothed out. Maybe it is me getting used to the sound but I've definitely noticed a change. I clearly remember my first listen with the speakers and thought they sounded surprisingly bright but after hours of use they've definitely become less edgy and have smoothed out considerably. I can't stress enough how great and powerful they sound. Pairing them with the captivator has definitely made my entire system smoother. I wouldn't' change anything.well maybe adding another captivator.

Want a new level of dynamics?

Watch the Fight Club plane crash dream sequence. SO dynamic it will make your drawers brown. WOW silence to full dynamic extension in 2 seconds
post #1128 of 8265
I like using The Dark Night and the scene when they fire the bullets for fingerprints. That scene is very dynamic. Very quiet to very loud 3 times and it progressively gets louder. I remember watching The curious case of Benjamin Button and some scenes were very dynamic, probably due to me falling asleep and then something blowing up to wake me.

The plane crash scene (Ch 6?) in Knowing is a good one too. The big post crash explosion is amazing.
The knowing has a couple that I like. When the guy opens his mouth in the woods is good for bass.
I didn't exept that first crash in Knowing but it sure got my attention. It scared the sh&* out if my girlfriend.

Thanks pinktri.

I won't have a sub for a while so I will be missing all the low bass goodies, lol.

Still beats the heck out of the current TV speakers that I use for TV/Movies although the JTRs are primarily for music, the HT is like a bonus!

Next on the upgrade list is a DTS-10 or 2

I don't think I have an option since I'm not really a DIY person so buying the kit would be useless unless I could find someone to assemble it for me.

Exactly too. I bet for 300 to put it together and maybe finish it yourself (paint or carpet.) Could be reasonable at about $1700

Still looking forward to hearing jeffs though

Defentive technology 7.1 system: I have the mythos 1 for left and right, center eights as my center, supercube 1 subwoofer, BP1.2 side surronds and mythos gems for rear. I picked this setup because of a great deal that i was offered which at that time was suppose to cost about $5,500 for the entire system but picked it up all for $2,000.

I'm currently running the speakers with a pioneer elite SC 05 reciever but in mid june I will be purchasing an amplifier to power up my speakers. I have been eyeing the MAGNUM 2500-7 from D-sonic and I would appreciate if you guys can comment on this amplifier if you are familiar with it or heard reviews of it. With a budget of $3500 for an amplifier is there any other brand that you guys would highly recommend?

Wow, $3500.00. I would say that is a nice chunk of change to set aside for an amp. As stated before, these JTR's are very sensitive and do not need globs of power to operate at reference levels in most rooms. Your room size would be one of the main factors for the need for more power. IMHO, I think you would be able to get an amp that would do the job for cheaper.
As far as recommendations, Jeff has posted some pro amps on his forums that would be more then adequate for the job. View the info. here:

Or look into jeffs subs. If you get a couple or a few he might be able to work with you on a package deal. If not I wouldn't have been able to afford all this gear.

I'm clean after these JTRs but I will start saving for the Danleys, it will take a while but worth it!

Since I just bought a pair of T12s there wasn't any packages Jeff could offer apart from the pre order special price (which was rather generous).

Nice, I hope you find both an increase in sound quality and dynamics with the JTR. Are you getting 3 triple 12's for the front LCR?

If you have your equipment rack sound isolated from your listening area as orcarola25 posted you can go with pro-amps.

I am not completely sold on Class D amp performance at higher frequencies, but have no problem using them with subwoofers. With that budget for amps I would get 3 Emotiva XPA-1 for the front speakers and use the receiver for the surrounds.
