It's frustrating not knowing any of these things.. you just know something's not right, but no way to fix it... and there aren't many 'acoustic' doctors in my country either...
I am very new to all of this too. I downloaded REW and bought a Cross Spectrum Labs UMM-6 USB mic. I started out with bad graphs. But with help from the REW thread I changed my room last night to a 100%symmetrical setup. Everything is measured to within a quarter inch. Middle of tv, subs from walls, couch width and length. All smack middle or even. This is the progression of graphs I have made.
This is before I changed my room layout with Audyssey off
Same measurement with Audyssey on. This setup did not sound good at all.
This is after changing the room layout. First graph is pre Audyssey second is with an Multi EQ XT 8 mic calibration.
That's a 5db fluctuation from 20-80hz! I am confident as I move forward with my mini dsp and getting room treatments I can get flat to 7hz! Note: subs will be crossed at 80hz. Little surrounds are set as L and R until my JBL rebuilt drivers arrive.
