How expensive is prob relative to the GDP. In the USA, i suppose most people could easily afford these speakers. (if they don't spend their money on too many other things).
In my country, I would say, hardly anyone would be able to afford them. A complete 5.1 set could be about $13,000 USD, more or less, which translate to RM 45,000 (more or less), which after taxes and shipping might get you to RM 80,000. (Note: people here earn far less dollar for RM annually. The average income is about $10,000 USD per person, which is less than the Speaker set).
For RM 80,000, you can buy a decent car, even a flat (cheap housing). For the average person, it might take them 6-8 years to finance such a speaker system if they opt not to have a car.
In most Hi-Fi shop, they don't even carry Hi-Fi speakers in that price range. Maybe in some very high end shops that cater to the 'rich and mighty'...
However, after all that said and done, I have yet to find another speaker system that even come close to these in terms of sound quality for the price. None.. so, for those that can afford them, relatively, they are cheap.. (if you rule out DIY and trying to find an alternative). The keyword here is for those that can 'afford' them. For everyone else, these could very well be 'that hi-fi' speaker you always dream about but could never afford...
