Sub seems great but my elctricity is giving me issues

I had a horrible ground hum that got louder with higher volume. I fixed that with a cheater plug and actually it still hums for the first 10 seconds after turning it on then fades away.

What I can say is the sub already gave me something I have sought for 2 years and many subs, it is the kind of bass drop sound. By that I mean you feel it fade out cleanly like I had only heard in well treated demo rooms at stores. Almost like a bass frequency sweep but in normal material. Very impressive. Also I can tell it is powerful. I really don't need 2... but I also don't need 3 quintuples and 2 JBL 8340's (which are HUGE by the way!)

Off to take the passive off now...

How are the JBL's?
Got my T8's and boy am i impressed!, definitely need to work on stands for these, my dts-10 seem to be working a lot better paired to T8's. Audyssey was having a heck of a hard time getting itself setup due to 89db sensitivity surrounds matched to these T8's with 98db sensitivity. Audyssey set reference level to 70db all around for some reason. and i watched the movie 9 at -5db. These speakers are great, the clarity, the little details, all i can say is WOW.

So my 2 Q8 and triple 8 arrived 2 weeks ago. Of course I was traveling the last two weeks. It was a painful waiting. I just got them out of the box and am getting ready to run setup. I will give my thoughts if anyone is interested.

That would be great and please post some pics of the setup.

would like to hear your review also of your new 3 8's.
just wondering for people with the 2010 T8's, have you ever measured your speakers?
i measured mine and 2 were 13.25" deep, while another one was 12.75" deep, not including the grille.

Something must have been punched into the CNC incorrectly. I would be sure and use the odd one for the center.

i wonder if minor difference in cabinet dimensions would change the sound much.

Mine are Baltic Birch and 12.75" deep. I believe the new MDF cabinets are slightly larger and that may account for the difference. In any case, they have the same drivers/crossover and should sound the same. I agree that you should use the 12.75" T8 as the center.

Did you buy them new?

got them lightly used from avs member rossandwendy. The weight of them appears to be pretty much the same, if they were mdf their weights would have been a lot different i thought.

Humm, Ross bought them used so I wonder who the original owner was? Jeff is going to have to start using serial numbers .

I was thinking they were 2010 models. Is that correct? They are already on their third owner?

Here is some T8 data provided by Jeff.

2007- 95db/1w, up too 600watt recommended amplification, 80hz-18khz, 12x12x28

2008- 95db/1w, up too 600watt recommended amplification, 80hz-18khz, 12x12x28 (revised cabinet and crossover)

2009- 95db/1w, up too 600watt recommended amplification, 80hz-20khz, 12x12x28 (new compression driver, crossover update, optional fabric grill)

2010- 98db/1w, up too 1200watt recommended amplification, 80hz-20khz, 12x14x26 (Complete re-design, first with movable mid/high)

From the dimensions, it seems as though you may have a mix of models.

The measurements he gave do not fit any of the T8 sizes. ufokillerz can you give the width and heights? Also for those that do not go to Jeff's site, he has cosmetic blemish T8's for $999 plus shipping. Price is good to the end of the month.

It sounds like the 12.75 is a 2010 model as it is the same as RMK!'s. I bet RMK! is right and the other 2 are MDF instead of Plywood and are also 2010 models. It sounds like the original owner bought a 2010 T8 center and liked it enough that he bought the left and right as well.

I am surprised that they are on their 3rd owner. You would have to pry mine from my dead fingers to get them away from me.
mine are 12x12.75x26 and 12x13.25x26
the 26 does indicate that they are 2010, so i would think. just weird having different sizes hah.

but yea these are great speakers, i am actually looking to get myself a Q8 for center (possibly) and 1 more T8, so i can have audyssey wide setup.

Quick update,

Found a way to stop my hum so it is not the sub. I still don't have a workable solution but I was able to make it stop after a nightmare of trying different wires.

I am dying to turn it up and set it up properly. It really seems to be a BEAST of a subwoofer. I have been around the block with subs but this one shakes things so much that my chairs feel like those massage chairs almost and that is with the passive radiator of and not calibrated or placed properly.

Really need to find a workable solution to my electrical issues asap.

Goonstopher, how can you get a credible assessment of the sub if the passive radiator is removed. I would not even want to listen without the radiator because the radiator allows it to reach its rated spec in the sub bass region. I'm just saying.

That is exactly what I am so excited about. It is set up poorly, half taken apart and has electrical noise working against it and it still has great power and clarity and is VERY tactile. I am just blown away by what it can do in this state.

I know it is not a fair assessment but it does hint at how good things are going to be!

I can put the PR back on and temporarily rig my electronic to get a better review. My problems between my circuits is all that is holding me back.

I see; fair enough.

One other thing Goonstopher, when do you expect your other captivator ? I hope that it arrives in good condition.

I am sure it will. Freak things happen. I haven't heard of anyone else having shipping damage on any jtr products so there is a first for everything but it's still very safe. It was just one ding worth mentioning.

I am in no hurry to get my second because this electrical issue has completely destroyed my set up. Wires are torn out, crossed, tangled and god knows where. My wall has a hole in it and 2 electrical boxes are torn out. Speakers and amps are moved around. Its a war zone in here while I try to fix my electrical issue that I just CANT find the source of.

Hey Goonstopher,

Did you get a chance to try out your JBL surrounds yet?

I was surprized by that also. Are the sizes listed in the specs on the JTR site wrong?
T8 Birch 26 x 12 x 14 (14" is the depth)
T8 MDF 26.5 x 12.25 x 14 (14" is the depth)

ufokillerz gave 12.75" and 13.25" for depth on his T8's and RMK gave 12.75" for his T12LF's. Mine are 2008's and they are the 12" deep as listed.

My T12LF's are actually T12HT's and are 16.5" (Deep/Wide). Are you confused yet . CNC machines have pretty tight tolerances and I'm sure there is a logical explanation including measuring errors by the owners (that includes me ).

Quite weird, seems like a lot of different sized speakers floating around, and the jtr website only has some specs partially updated it would seem.
It seems like Jeff's website is always quite a bit behind as far as updates are concerned. The announcement area on his forums seem to be a little more accurate.

Anyone get tracking numbers on their T12s yet???

I did remember that you had the 12's. , but I was thinking they were LF's. I am an engineer and I even went back and checked my speakers again to double check myself.
