Official JTR speaker thread - Page 60

Also want to say:

Anything implied or inferred about these speakers not being able to be transparent and live for acoustic music is BS!

I am no audiophile but I have had paradigm studio 60's and cc 690 with a pb13 ultra and right now the jtr setup is kicking their butts. I just listened to the Dave Mathews Live at Radio City and wow. I am not even a Dave Mathews fan and my gf said "I hate this but it sounds so good." Her reviews are often the best because they are like a child's, very blunt and simply but if she notices anything then you know it must be obvious. Personally I got chills. I have had chills from NIN before because of its power but never experienced the sound of a band being "in the room" like this. Is it possible some open baffle or planar design with a tube amp could delivery more lifelike voices? I guess but could that same setup hit over 100dB with nin and exceed reference level on Iron Man?...

question for quintuple 8 owners. what crossover setting are you guys using on your receivers?
I love the speakers but I use 80hz because I don't like the bass sound from the speakers as much as from the captivator. I prefer my bass a touch hot and have better equalization on the sub.

I believe Anthem Arc set my 3 Q8s at 75hz...
They sound awesome! Very happy with them

I like to play around and switch anywhere from 60 to 100hz. Kinda depends what material I'm listening to. 80hz gets the majority of use though. With running audyssey on my onkyo 1007 a couple of times, it set them all to 60 one time, and then 80 for the left and right, and full range for the center the second time.
thanks for the reply on the Q8's, i only have 2 of the 3 i ordered, but wow i am impressed with the sound from them. The Q8's are gigantic next to the T8's that were in its place.

was listening to music in pure audio mode with just the 2 Q8's and wow they are loud and clear, and the midbass from them is great!, went out to throw out garbage and it was crisp and clear even from outside! at -15db to ref and -9.5db in prepro setup,

such a big difference in size between the T8 and the Q8! stacked my T8 on top just to see how it looked.

That is why I do not use auto set up.

Ufokillerz, you are right. The T8's look small compared to the Q8's. I never bothered to look at the size of the Q8's and did not realize that they were deeper.

I will be taking delivery of my onkyo 876 later today and finally be able to listen to my triple 12's.

Question: Since I have no subs yet or surrounds at the moment could I still listen to two channel music and or a movie in two channel mode?

If so, what do I set the speakers to: large or small, do I need to set a crossover?

Im new at all this, thanks

Set them to "Large" and the Subwoofer to "NO" and have fun ...

That said, you will have twice the fun with a sub(s).

Has anyone had any luck communicating with Jeff through email? I've sent off a few emails over the past month and still haven't received a response.

Was just wondering it it's me, or emails are pretty much a no go for Jeff?

Would not say a no go but maybe less likely than a call.

He does his best to answer and for a while was always able to within a day. I still get as response to 3 out of 4 emails when he isn't traveling. There have been a couple times when he was away on business that emails got backed up and seemed to slide off his to-do list.

Pics would be good...

BTW, did you re-install the PR on the Captivator?

It's not you (although you are Canadian and Jeff has been seriously pissed since the Hockey gold medal game) .

Communication with a small company like JTR can be frustrating at times and he know he needs to get better at it. Simply put, Jeff would rather design and build audio products than hang out on Forums or answer email or phone calls. He also likes motorcycles and an occasional meal so expect a response soon.

Looks like a much better setup than what you had before. Does it sound better?
Definitely sounds much better. Not perfect yet but the separation now is much better, everything is clear and the cap blends with the speakers so well that when it is off I can sometimes not even notice until the bass gets heavy because I got use to it being seamlessly integrated.

Yea I figured that was the problem, just thought I would ask in case I was sending to the wrong email or possibly a problem on my end.

Oh and your setup looks great, quite the change from the pics you posted earlier. Hope you get that nasty hum figured out one of these days so you can finally sit down, relax, and enjoy all your jtr's have to offer.

Haha, won't be hearing any complaining on my end

Seems like my email slipped through the cracks, but all is well now.

Thanks for updating your build thread over the years RMK!, it was one of the first threads that stopped me in my tracks and I had to read from start to finish. I really enjoyed seeing the overall evolution of your theater to it's present state. You have a beautiful setup and all your hard work clearly shows in all the pictures you've posted. Keep up the great work!

just wondering, are you running a 3.1 or do you have surrounds mounted somewhere?

Ok just ordered 3 Triple 8's and was going to lay the center horizontal and place my tv on top of it,my question is I have a built-in wall unit that takes up the whole wall which contains shelves on both sides of the tv that can be removed,so my options are to lay the left and right speakers horizontal or I could stand them upright-which would be better? It has been mentioned that they have a different sound (worst) when layed horizontal. I could probably have Jeff position the midrange accordingly. Any advise would be helpful. I am also using a Seaton Submersive so im assuming having the crossover around 80????? Im hoping to be adding a Growler Duo to the mix!!!!

made some stands for my Triple 8's today, they were cheaper to make then i thought!, all it took was a 4x4 that i had laying around, and some ply wood i had lying around, 4x4's werent long enough so i extended them a bit, stacking them on each other, glue and 2 screws through it.. ply wood bases were made to match the dimensions of my T8. So far these things seem pretty sturdy, the plywood bases are held to the 4x4 with some glue and a single 2-1/2" screw.
will cover this thing in herculiner as soon as i patch in the holes! pictures to follow. Total height of the T8 on stand = 43", 43" = same height as my Quintuple 8's.

After reading this thread and comparing other speakers (reading reviews) I finally decided and ordered 3 triple 12's last week.

Will be using it in a 19'x27'x11' dedicated HT room.

Just wondering haven't receive any email yet from Jeff when it will be shipped. The waiting is killing me.

They are built to order and generally take 3-5 weeks (from what I have seen in the thread). Good things come to those who wait

I've been waiting since January 5th, the wait is definitely killing me too but as goon said good things come to those who wait. Jeff told me that mine will hopefully ship this week!

It will come eventually, just count sheep

You know the interesting thing about waiting for a JTR product is that its allowed me to focus on other aspects of my home theater. Things that I would have ignored had I had all my components in at one time. Like a small child you want to play with everything as soon as you get it. Leaving plenty of room for error. My wait has been short for some products and is still going for other components. Since the arrival of part of my order I have been working on adding circuits, absorbtion panels, stands, and component rack. All projects have been DIY, which has given me a sense of accomplishment. Playing the waiting game can be stressful but take it from me. Do yourself a favor and set everyhting you can in your respective space the best way you can. Do it right! When you finally get your new componenets you will have peace of mind knowing your space is the best that it an be and you will reap the rewards having a killer setup.

I have a pair of DIY sealed subs up front and I made a bracket to attach to the back of the subs for my T8's to sit on. I placed four self sticking rubber pads on the shelf for the T8 to sit on and the T8's do not move any at all. Here is a pic that shows the stand.
[IMG][/IMG]
My pictures showing the JTR's does not show the stand very well. Here it is after modifying the subs (removed amp and installed TC Sounds driver) and installing the JTR T8's.
[IMG][/IMG]
The stand screws to the back of the sub and has a tapered brace that sits on top of the sub so that it is "T" shaped with a shelf fastened to the top of the "T".
