Wow, sorry guys, didn't mean for my question to stir up issues.
The reason why I considered the SHO-10s for surrounds, was that in a recent get together (at carp's place), they were rated quite favorably against the JTR Triple 8. Because of this, I thought they would be much better than the S8s. In particular, I thought the midbass would be better, as the SHO has a 10" woofer, compared to an 8" in the S8.
They also have a 90x90 dispersion pattern, so I figured this would work quite well for surround monopoles.
RMB, I'm glad someone else had the same idea as me
. Thanks for your feedback.
CWV, thanks for your great input. You're right, there's no point compromising when I'm going to have a system based on JTRs flagship speakers. The reason why I decided to spend more and go with the Noesis over the T12s, was I didn't want to feel like I need to upgrade in a year or two. I wanted a system that would match my expectations and keep me satisfied for years to come.
I should use the same logic for the surrounds. Thanks for putting things in perspective CWV!
MK, fair point. Just because a speaker is very capable, doesn't mean it will work well in an overall sound system with other type of speakers.
But, as RMK pointed out, I always thought that the surrounds don't need to necessarily match the LCRs. Especially since my application will be pretty much 100% movies. Also, I thought there would be a considerable difference in the signature of the sound produced by the Noesis and S8s, given they're quite different speakers. With that in mind, I didn't see the need to stay with JTR for the surrounds.
My budget of $500 a speaker was just because I didn't believe there was much value in spending any more on surround speakers. Since HT is my only real hobby and I don't have kids yet, I'm in the fortunate position that all my disposable income can go into this passion - spending more wont be a problem, as long as there's a reasonable gain to be made.
Based on the feedback people have provided, I think I'll just wait till I receive my Noesis first before I make a decision. This will also enable me to get RMKs feedback on the Noesis, and how well they integrate into his system
Thanks everyone for their input.
BTW - RMK, I lived in Melbourne (south east side of Australia) up until mid August. Now I'm in Perth (west side of Australia).
I recall reading somewhere you were coming here for a holiday, hadn't realised you had already come and gone. If you had been passing through my area, you would have been welcome to crash at my place.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself here. But I bet you now I understand why everyone in Australia complains about everything being so expensive here!
