I agree with everything you said, carp, well, almost. I'll pit Images and Words, Awake and Scenes From A Memory against, Puppets, Lightning and Justice any day.
Metallica is what got me into this genre, though, so I have nothing but respect. But as I grow older I appreciate the technical ability of "better" bands. Bands like DT, Symphony X and COB are always pushing the envelope of technicality and just great riffs/time signatures. I can't get enough. I do listen to other genres, of course, but I'm definitely a rocker.
Mike Portnoy took over production after Awake, and it was obviously a big mistake because sound quality suffered. Now that Mike is gone Petrucci is doing it, but it still sucks. What a shame...
By the way, your room is sick - I love it! One day I hope to have a similar setup.

They don't get enough credit for what they do. I saw them at a small venue and it was so awesome. I also met Russell afterwards - what a nice guy. He's my favorite vocalist of all rock/metal bands. He just crushes on Iconoclast.
So While we're on the subject, I notice a lot of rock music lovers like higher efficiency designs. Is it because you like listening loud, just as if you were at a live concert? I must be the only one that prefers the sound quality of a rock album on his home system vs. a live show (well, it depends on the band, but I mostly prefer the studio album's sound quality).
