Official JTR speaker thread - Page 23

So I've pretty much decided to go with the Quint 8's as I've discussed earlier. I don't need the furniture grade finish for my cabinet install but I'm thinking it might be worthwhile for resale if I ever need to sell these.

What would you do? Is it worth the upgrade or should I just save the cash for something else?

Thanks!

Louis

Me again ;-)

This is a from scratch new build so I have a lot of decisioms to make. For an AVR I've decided to go with the Denon 4810CI and implement 11.1 as quickly as possible. As such, I need to decide on what I'll use for all the surround channels. I'm less concerned about the side, rears, and heights, but it seems that the wides become the most critical additional speaker in this configuration.

My thinking is that a pair of the T8s would be best but probably overkill not to mention taking up more space and dollars then I really want to part with for this application.

On the otherhand, the Slant 8HT might work well for this application even though it rolls off on the low end. What do you guys think? Should that be a concern?

Thanks again!

Louis

The screen is acoustically transparent and in front of a 36" tall dividing wall which is the only thing separating the next room which has another 20 feet behind it. My speakers are on a platform in between the 2 rooms so the wall behind the speakers is 20 feet away which means next to no support from the room. My thinking was to add the Growler (long throw and able to hang with the DTS-10 in output and sensitivity) up front to reinforce the 888s and the DTS-10s to serve as riser and handle the rest. My receiver has 2 LFE outputs so should make integration easier.

Hi gpmbc,

That is an interesting approach with the T8 combo and T12 center. Did you just happen into this or was it by design? I can see some benefit in adding the T12 to the mix. I could even go with 2 Q8s with a T12.

i am no pro on 11.1 but as long as the speaker is rated for 80 hz and it is than it should work great . jeff is comming out this weekend cant wait .

I like the Seymour screen a lot. The moire I was getting with my old screen is completely gone with the new XD material. I can barely notice the screen texture from about 8' away when it is a very bright scene. For the cost, its a no brainer. UMR has a screen comparison thread in the screen forum and he has tested it. It is fairly color neutral and the acoustic properties seem to be pretty good.

The RS2 is still a great looking projector and should do well with a Seymour screen.

I wonder if JTR will ever make a dipole-bipole spk or a bookshelf spk, maybe a double 8!!

I've been wondering the same thing but I don't think this speaker design lends itself to bi/di-pole given the coax design. I'm sure it could be done with 2 of the coax units but it would get bulky and - at least for me - end up being more than I'd want to spend on a surround.

Thanks I wanted to get rid of my Polk fx1000s & maybe get the slanted 8s for a sonic match but I dont really think matching surrounds to front is that important.Im thinking about changing the drivers in the polks to the brand jtr uses but I dont think it would work.Oh I have triple 12 for lcr.

Hint: Take a look at the first post of this thread He doesn't have the T8's anymore though, but I think he's still using the T12 as a center.

Disclaimer: What is written below is completly my uneducated opinion regaring the usefullness of Dipole-Bipole speakers in a modern home theater system. Take anything you read below with several grains of salt.

Bipole-Dipole speakers have outgrown their usefulness. They were fine for Dolby Prologic, but it is detrimental to true multichannel surroud. I think a Dipole-Bipole speaker would be vastly inferior to a Slant 8 or Triple 8 surround.

Have you ever listened to music on your Dipole surrounds. If not, try it and see if that is what you would like your surround channels to sound like.

Today's sound tracks include discrete surround information. There is no need to try to get a diffuse soundfield unless you are using a matrixed source like a VHS tape with Dolby Prologic.

Movie theaters use monopole surrounds, just several of them per side. From what I understand, mixing studios use monopole surrounds. There is no reason to try to make the sound bounce around behind you. Almost any monopole will beat a Dipole for creating a good surround experience. A wide dispersion, efficent, speaker such as any of the JTR models will do even better.

On the other hand, a Double 8 might be interesting.

I thought he was going to make a single 8 for small rooms or was that Soundood hoping for one. What ever happened to him.

Jedirun,

There is an interesting thread somewhere here on AVS going at this topic at length and the general conclusion was ... it depends.

The depends had a lot to do with the size of the listening environment - monopoles work better in large live listening rooms - and how large a sweet spot you are expecting. Di / Bi-pole being better for a large sweet spot. Modern recording techniques do seem to make more of a difference as well.

At this time, I have zero experience with either so am at a disadvantage but I see the theory of monopoles being frequently overridden by the practical merits of di / bi-poles.

In my case, my listening room is a pretty good size (21x21) and the surrounds will have to be at ceiling height, so monopoles might work the best. Its just defficult to test without buying two sets of speakers.

Isn't the Slant 8 a single 8 or do you mean a Double 8?

A slant 8 is angled for surround duty and hangs on the wall. The single 8 was going to be a bookshelf or rectangle speaker.

Thanks jedirum, anyone use the slanted 8s for surround?I was wondering about there 100-20000 hz freq response & sq.My room is fairly small at 24x11.5x8.5 ft,you make a good point about the newer hd sound,my surrounds dont sound as good as they use to.

Got it. I asked Jeff about this in an email yesterday and he made it sound like he would accomodate this request. My ceiling is already slanted so a Slant 8 would have my surrounds almost pointing directly at the floor. In any case, I really want to flush mount them.

I've got a pair but I have them crossed at 80hz with no issues.

The 2010 Slanted8s have a -3db of 80hz

Are you using them as Wides?
thanks, that makes the slanted 8s more interesting.Theres a couple of sellers in the classifieds with 888s & slanted 8s but i dont know if they are the 2010 models I need to pm them both.
No. As surrounds. If you used them as wides, you could probably just rotate them and wall mount them rather than having to toe them in.

Yea, that's pretty much what I was thinking. Given my room dimensions (21' wide) it would be easy enough to mount them to the side walls.

So, I looked back at your early email. It seems you have them in the rear. Any issues with this monopole setup?

Hey Louis it just kind of worked out that way. I started with 3) Triple 12LFs and at my previous house with the room sealed I was good. The new house is so open that my impact suffered so I sold 2 of Triple 12LFs. I figured I'd get the 888s and only run them to about 120 augmented with some added midbass and get that impact back if not more while still having a pretty consistent sound across the front stage.
jeff needs to change model numbers when he changes desighns i see the 8 where upgraded in 09 ? and are called 2010 ? new mid driver and crossover same with the surrounds . why not the triple 8 m or something triple 8 c how do you determan the difference in model changes . alot for sale used they could call them what ever they want . anyone know .
