Looks like having a demo of the Noesis done at my home isn't going to happen. I am looking forward to hearing the T12's and T8's in a few weeks, as that will be my only option of listening to JTR speakers before purchasing them.

Room treatments are on my list to get done soon. Any recommendations on where to look?

Contact Jeff. There is an HT12 owner in Knoxville. I have met him. I think there is an HT12 owner in Nashville also.

Nice speakers by the way. Big upgrade over what you had and what you had were pretty good speakers.

Ha, no I hear that all the time too. I actually like my bright room - not saying I prefer it to the dark rooms I've been in but it's not enough of a difference right now to get me to paint the ceiling. We use our basement a lot, not just for movies and I like the fact that it's not a dark room. Someday I might do it, but I'm so much more into audio than I am video anyway so it's not a priority.

What do you mean by HT12?

I asked Jeff about anybody in this area with Noesis, but I guess I should have asked about his other speakers.

Thanks.

T12 - HT.
The Noesis has only been out for about 60 days so there just isn't that many owners yet.
I am sure that will change over the next year.

Duh, that makes sense and I should have realized that is what it meant...

Only 60 days... WOW. I thought these had been out longer.

I bought some black stretch velvet to cover the 12' x 6' area in front of my screen. I was hoping to have it ready for the Omaha Home Theater Tour, but didn't have time. I still haven't used it yet. I'm going to install grommets in the corners and use some eyehooks. That way I can black out the ceiling for movies, but have it white when used as a living room.

Great idea DD, thanks for the tip! I may have to try that. Do you think you can get it to stretch without sagging in the middle? Or are you planning to support with additional grommets/hooks in the middle?

I think your white ceiling is a nice contrast and really makes your room pop without over doing it.
Keep it just like it is.

I am thinking about getting some more prostar (the self adhesive black felt stuff that I have on my masking panels) to put above the screen. On dark scenes the black bars show up above the screen on the wall and a little bit on the ceiling and on that beam. In non dark scenes you don't see them at all, but I'm to the point where it's bugging me a little bit.

I'm concerned most with keeping it tight against my screen housing. If it doesn't stretch tight with just corner grommets, then I'll have extra grommets along that edge.

Blacking out the ceiling, walls and floor out from the screen is one of the best improvements you can make to video quality. I bought some remote controlled curtain tracks off ebay and installed them along the walls in my old room. When I wanted to watch, I hit the remote and black velvet curtains went down the length of the room. I had a dark oriental rug so didn't mess with the floor but covered the ceiling in black velvet. You don't need to do the whole room, just 6' out from the screen or so. Your picture will absolutely pop. Without the black velvet treatments, I find the picture way too washed out.

ats acoustics makes a good product and can even do them custom. Not too expensive either. I used their 2 inch and 4 inch thick panels.

I have both GIK (approx 20 2'X4') and ATS (approx 8 including some custom size) panels. I agree with Beastaudio's statement ^ about ATS being a very good panel for the money. In fact, although the GIK is a good product the they are helpful ... if I had a do-over I would be all ATS.
Interesting scenario I am considering....

1. Pick up three of the T8's that a forum member is selling used. Then use the extra money I saved to add room treatments to my room and possibly a third sub.

2. Go all in and get three of the Noesis speakers and wait on the room treatments...

Still need to listen to JTR speakers before any decision is made.

Just want to make sure that I get the setup that will give me a significant increase in dynamics and performance...

I have turned into "that guy" who is annoying in threads...haven't I?

Thank you for the suggestions. I have contacted GIK to get the ball rolling. I will also take a look at ATS and see what they have to offer.

I will just throw in I have also had really good luck with acoustimac. Good value and independent testing.

Side note, I just signed up for direct tv. Never had it before, always cable. I've heard I'll see improvement since some of the channels are 1080p, that would be very nice tv looks great already.

It's a big step up in quality from cable. It is the same as watching the extra HD dvd that comes with most BR's. The sound quality is great. Its worth it just for that. The only thing that is better is Blu-Rays.

Just my 2 cents...I would spend all you could on the Noesis and add the treatments later. It will minimize the upgrade-itis disease that most of us have. You can always add treatments later. But buy lesser speakers and you will always wonder.

Last night I was of course listening to music as usual, and I played one of my wife's recent purchases from itunes. The group is called il Divo and the song was a remake of Chris Isaac's Wicked Game. These guys are opera style singers, so obviously not my cup of tea, but I heard it before when she first bought it an noticed how good it sounded on the Noesis. Well, last night I cranked up that song and it was un-frickin-believable how good it sounded. I had chills (most I've ever had listening to music at home), goose bumps, and was laughing to myself all at the same time. Pure audio bliss with a style of music that I don't even like. smile.gif

Anyone that has Spotify, you should check it out especially if you have Noesis - David your Salks would love this one too.

Coach, you gotta go all the way and get the Noesis. I agree with dlbeck, you will always wonder what if...

That's surprising to me, anything that I play from my iPhone whether is from iTunes or a ripped CD always sounds pretty crappy. If I want to listen to music I find myself heading to the basement to find the box full of old CD's.

Any tricks for getting it to sound so good from iTunes?
Thanks Carp. I'll check it out.

Wow, that's an awesome deal! I'm a bit jealous of the person that will be able to score those.

How would you guys describe your JTR speakers? After all these years of owning the Triple 12LF I still think they are a bit too bright to me. Hopefully after a good dialing in of my system with the new CHT subs it will sound awesome. I've always felt they were bright and never well integrated with the subs.

Can't wait to hear the Neosis. After that it will be major decision time for me, continue with JTR or go back to a B&W type speaker with a silky smooth high and nice solid mid.

Biggest improvement would be the T8's and room treatments, An average speaker in a really good room will beat a fantastic speaker in a crappy room, every time. Still something to be said for taking the slow route and getting what you want a few pieces at a time. smile.gif

Ok Carp. That's the last fricken song I thought you would say was "unbelievable". It's a far cry from Opeth and dream theater. You ok? Not feeling well...a little depressed that you had to go back to work? :-)
