Official JTR speaker thread - Page 250

So I'm completely new to the speaker world, never have owned a pair of speakers in my life. I bought a 80" Sharp and decided it was time to change that. So I did a lot of reading and asked a lot of questions on this forum, thanks RMK and everyone else who answered my questions, and decided on the JTRs. I found a pair of T8s and i jumped on them and will be using them as my L/R. I then found an S2 for sale and got that too. I recently ordered a S8-LP for my center channel from Jeff and will hopefully be getting that shortly. in the near future I will be getting two slanted 8s for my surrounds and hopefully that will complete my setup.

I sit back almost 13' and had planned on lowering my tv about 3-4" and mount the center channel under the tv. Now that I got the S2 in, I have 15.5" of space between my tv and sub, so thats no longer an option. Now I'm thinking of just placing the S8 on top of the sub and not actually mounting it. If i did that, what would I need to place, if anything, between the sub and the center channel?

I will be getting stands for the L/R to bring them up to ear level. Just added a pic to show my setup so far. Thanks to everyone for their posts and information. I'm sure I'll have more questions once I start wiring this up.

I use eight 4x4x7/8 rubber isolation pads bought from ebay for $24 shipped to isolate my quintuple center channel from the S2.

You are most defiantly on your way to a "go big or go home" system!

They won't be visible unless you place them on the corner, which you don't need to.

Wow, that is pretty much my system. Those are exactly the 3 speakers I was enjoying so much last night for 2 channel music, except it took me 16 years and more system configurations than I can count to get there. Nice job!

Those of you who have used T8's and Slanted 8's as surrounds, I'm looking to hear your opinion on this subject.

Here is a panoramic pic of my setup (taken before my stands were in place).

If you look on the far wall you can see the speaker jack where the speakers will be plugged into. I plan on mounting the speakers to the side of the jack that is closer to the screen. As you can see there is a gap on my left side between the seating area and the wall where my left surround will be placed. So there is going to be different distances between the 2 speakers and the listening area.

My main question is I'm wondering if the T8's would be overkill for this vs the Slanted 8's. Like will I even notice a difference at all since these will be surround usage? I probably will never listen to actual 5.1 music in this area and it will be strictly for gaming/movies/tv. I also plan on most likely purchasing these speakers used so I'm not looking at the retail prices.

So anyone have any opinion on the matter here? The room is about 20x26, and the seating area is about 13ft or so back from the screen. If you couldn't tell, those are T12's and Caps that these surrounds will be paired with.

Would I be just wasting money on purchasing T8's to match the speakers as I won't get much out of them over the Slanted 8's?

Rooms looks fantastic...well done. For surrounds, get whatever you think is "better". If they are equal in your mind then go for the one that costs less. If somewhere in your mind you think the T8s are "better", then just spend the money once, get them, and enjoy them forever.

Looks great. I am sure you will enjoy your system tremendously. As a fellow S2 owner, prepare to experience "real" bass biggrin.gif

Does anyone have the black finish? If so, just wondering what you think of it. I'm considering getting one of the finishes and I'm looking for peoples impressions. Thanks.

Before JTR I was straight up piano blk or blk oak only. Now that I have the T12's I would not choose Blk Oak over the standard finish for free. I hate Piano blk even though thats not a choice. I like the rounded over edges on my standard blk finish and the custom versions have flat edges which some prefer but its not a choice. I would paint my whole room in Duratex if I could get by with it. I might feel like that b/c I know it will never be an option since I am Happily married and choose to keep it that way.smile.gif
I think the standard finish looks Mean as Hell.wink.gif

Yeah, I mean technically speaking, the T8's ARE better than the Slanted 8's.

But what I am looking for in general is just opinions from those who have heard both speakers and could give me a better opinion on if there will be any real difference between the 2 speakers at the surround position, since the only decision I can make is based on my gut and just research I've done.

Get the T8 lp's for SS and the Slanted 8's for RS. The rears should be mounted up higher with the angle pointed just over the LP's head so this combination would be sweet. Just ask Rob.wink.gif

Hah definitely not going to do a 7.2 setup, so that is out of the question! Only will have the rear surrounds.

I didn't catch the only 5.2 instead of 7.2. The Slanted 8's have a different CD (Neo mag) vs the T8's so they are alot more capable then you might think. If you are mounting on the rear wall I would do the Slanted 8's and not think twice. If for some reason down the road you want more, as we all do, then add the T8's on the side to make a 7.2. system.
Once again do not let the small size fool you. There are almost never used Slanted 8's 4 sale for a reason.

Thanks guys. I can't figure out the multi quote on my phone.

One question, when I go to set up audyssey what should I have my sub dialed in at to start?

I set the level of the S2 to around 75 db before running Audyssey. This was about 1/2 way up.
Just set your subwoofer trim level in your AVR at 0.0 and adjust the gain on your amp until your spl meter reads 75dB. adjusting the trim level in your AVR before Audyssey does absolutely nothing.

That's to bad because with a 5.1 setup the "surrounds" are on the sidewall. It is the surround backs that are on a back wall. I would not put surrounds on the back wall but if you must, then the back wall corners and 45° the speakers aiming at the center LP would work. If you do this then T8's would give you more potent surround effects. I'd get the T8LP's as they are more boundary tolerant (that's what I have wink.gif).

Yes. That is what I meant, the trim setting on the S2. If it is set too high when you run Audyssey, it may not set the level correctly.
