Yup, the LCR is new. I already got the Slanted8 and OS previously. This just completes my 7.1 JTR system smile.gif

What were you running for your mains before ordering the 228HTs?

Klipsch XF48 (active), and RC62. They are also high sensitivity speakers and also horn based...which I like. But it had been 5 years now, and I really like the slanted8 sound, and with 228 more directive and works better in my less than ideal living room, I really want to give this a try.

Just curious if anyone here has watched The Man With the Iron Fists on their setups. I watched it this morning and I had to turn the bass down quite a bit from my normal listening levels because the subs were just cranking TOO loud.

This past week I was playing God of War Ascension on my setup too and noticed that my dual Caps were clipping my EP4000 in a couple parts. I even have the dip switches set to not let it get to the clipping level but it still was. Now I am contemplating upgrading to one of the Crown amps lol, but that probably wouldn't happen for a while. If I'm already happy with the EP4000, would I really notice any significant difference with one of the better Crown amps?

Also, I may be getting my surrounds, and I may make the trek up to NY to pick up T8's as my surrounds. Anyone here mount T8's on a wall for surround and have any pics? I'm looking for ideas. Right now I'm thinking if I DO get them, that I may just put a shelf on the wall at the height I want the speakers, and put them on there. That way I can change the angle of the speakers easily too if I want to change the direction of them slightly.

Haven't seen the Man with the Iron Fists but have been meaning to and I'm more interested now. smile.gif

Here is the standard Triple 8 wall mounted via a french cleat with a cutout GIK Acoustics 242 Panel and some small crown molding to "finish it off". For me, aesthetics are secondary and so this was a quick way to take some of the ugly out of having that 12" deep speaker hanging in plain view.

I then purchased the T8-LP's and gave them the same treatment but these had the keyhole mounts installed by Jeff.

Cool thanks for those pics. Did you mount the cleats/speakers to a stud or just the drywall? I know I have a stud right near where I'm going to mount mine but was just wondering.

Also I notice you have a bunch of sound panels. Does it matter exactly where you place those things or do you just kind of hang em anywhere on the wall?

The reason I'm wondering is because yesterday during the day I was watching a movie and the sunlight coming in my window wells was noticeable. I was wondering if covering them up with some blacked out sound panels would be a good idea, or if I should just get some curtains.

A crown or cerwin vega 5000 watt amp is significantly louder than the EP4000 powering a pair of caps. If the EP4000 on a pair of caps was enough to drive me out of the room, the Crown is enough to borderline start breaking things. Gorilla83 measured the two at max and found something like 5-7dB peak differences with the EP4000 vs. Crown XLS-5000. By the numbers it should be about 3dB louder per subwoofer (as the 5000 watt amps give out about double the power at two ohym give out about double the power) --- so with a pair of caps maybe 4.5 to 6dB more based on location of subs. Pretty significant if you find yourself limited. But if you are only tickling the clip lights on the EP4000 - there's no point.

When you start tickling the clip lights on the Crown XLS-5000 you'll find yourself tripping 20 amp circuits. At least that's been Gorilla83 and my experience.

Both of my sidewalls are shear walls with 1/2" plywood sheathing under the drywall so I didn't have to worry about hitting a stud. I have used drywall anchors for the S8's (these worked well) with no problems.

The sound panels were placed to absorb the first reflection points of the LCRs. I also received some good advice from Keith Yates and ended up extensively treating the front wall, the ceiling and the back wall. The back wall is treated for both absorption and diffusion.

Regarding your question about your window wells, I have the same situation. I had ATS build 2, 2" thick custom sized panels that fit exactly in the window wells. You can see a portion of these in the last photo of the T8-LP's and they are normally on that wall hung over two other standard 2' X 4' panels. In the summer time with extended daylight or for daytime movie watching I just move those panels to the window wells. I built a 2"X 4" frame painted the wall color to hang the larger custom panels over the existing 242 panels.

I can attest to the obvious SPL increase when going from the ep4000 to the Crown. It is NOT a subtle difference. Also, with the ep4000 no HPF needed IMO, but you better have one with the crown or cv.

I went to Lowes and got 2 sheets of 4 X 8 foam board insulation and cut plugs to fit in the window wells. Cut window plugs first and with the left over cut strips to put up against the glass and frame first, then put the plugs in. Where I had a seam for the window plug and wall, I taped the seams with Duct Tape then painted the window plugs the same as the walls. You can see the room here before and after http://www.avsforum.com/t/1416077/bsoko2-new-ht-june-2012.

That is another way to go. I decided that I did not want the windows in the HT room to be permanently covered so the ATS panels serve a dual purpose. They are on the wall or covering the window. The large custom ATS panels were only $100 each and very well made. Moving them does change the acoustic properties of the room slightly but I like the trade off. smile.gif

I bought some blackout curtains at target, $40, and hung them inside the window well. To take care of any bleed through of light and also treat the back wall, I mounted acoustic panels over the window. It worked out well. There is absolutely no light leakage.

Cool thanks for some of the suggestions. Does placement of the sound panel things on walls really matter? Or do you just put them wherever?

I'm also debating if I should watch the Hobbit tomorrow when I get it, or wait because I may be picking up some T8's this weekend to make my surrounds of my 5.2 complete...

Yes, the placement does matter ... you should look at this (and other acoustics sites) before doing anything room treatment wise.

Very nice!! those curtains will make a big difference, I just have 2 casement windows in my basement but putting in black out curtains made a huge difference in here. Nice treatments too!!

Just a quick question regarding wall mounting. I may need to mount my center on the wall (untreated), though the thought was to put in on a shelf that is smaller than the speaker rather than directly on the wall - just easier for me that way. I know the 8 LP's are voiced to be "boundary compliant" however are there any concerns with back scatter from the wall?

Thanks!

I will RMK....just haven't had much time with them yet. I did watch the intro to Art of Flight over and over and over really loud lol cool.gif

I need to throw in some music selections and some Blus I know really well and then I'll post back. I can say I think they mate perfectly well with the S8-LPs. I had only ordered the left and right until I sold my T8s(which I did), so I've ordered up the 3rd 3TX for center duty too.

If you can't post superlatives after only a few brief listening sessions Kevin I'm afraid you just don't have the right stuff to review speakers here. Heck , most people here are very comfortable posting comments about speakers they have never heard ... now that takes real courage (and imagination). smile.gif

Well, after some 100 or so pages in this thread I am convinced.
Just have to sell some gear before I ' ll order :
212 HT LP's LCR and 228 HT' s SLSR.

I live in the Netherlands so buying speakers this way might look foolish, but I already have the two Captivators and know
what JTR products are capable of.
You guys did the rest.
So looks like this weekend I'm going to be getting my surrounds! Going with some T8's and driving 4 hours each way to go pick them up. Not looking forward to the drive but looking forward to the result!

Great decision! You're gonna love them. smile.gif

I' m sure I will.

Your enthusiasm and description about/of their musical performance was very insightfull. Thanks.
My use is 50/50 for music/ ht and I got the impression that earlier JTR speakers were not very music orientated.
The Noesis range is ,from what I read here.

I also like the idea of their controlled dispersion pattern.
My room is treated but to the right is a wall/ window and the left is more or less open.
( hence the LP)

Hey Purebeast..

I drove 8 hours each way to get my T12's.....

Things we do for this lobby..
Haha damn okay now I can't be crying about an 8 hour round trip then.

I have the 212HT across the front too. They are fabulous and I am coming from the T12LP's which are gret too, but the 212HT are on another level for music. The mid and high's are now just as addictive as hard hitting bass is to me. I was 50/50 music/ movies before now its more like 70/30. Still watching just as many movies but spending more time listening to music. I can't wait to hear your impressions. what are you running for subs? The dispersion pattern really helps project sound to the rear of my room better too.. enjoy:D

Good to hear you are enjoying them.
I was a music first type but HT by now has caught up.

For subs I have the Captivator 2011's on a pair of Crown XTi 4002 amps, bridged @ 2400 W.
So already got a big taste of JTR.
Right now I am hungry for more.

It was a fun trip... I sold my Klipsch setup to somebody that was on the way, so it worked out pretty well for me. Weather was horrible too, but the end result of the trip made it worth it.

Now if I can find some T8's or Slanted 8's to use as rears....might do the trip again if I can... wink.gif
post #7709 of 8265
My contractor quoted $600 to hide my Triple 8 surrounds in the walls. I am probably 4-6 weeks out from completing my hidden, wife approved, 7.1 JTR system.
So I got back from my NYC trip and I now have Triple 8's! I immediately hooked them up with the "channel test" on my left channel to make sure they worked. One thing I did notice is that the 2 speakers definitely sound different when hooked to the same input during the channel level setting. Now keep in mind, this is simply white noise. But 1 speaker sounded a bit "muffled" compared to the other one. But I then listened to some music with just each speaker hooked up separately, and I could not tell a difference. I kept switching between the two and I couldn't tell any difference. So I hope they are okay.

Now I had a question too. I want to mount these on the wall. I was thinking about a shelf to build and put them on top of that so that I could angle them and what not. I do have 1 stud that is in the middle of the area that I want to mount these.

And here is my question...

I was thinking something like this - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-18-in-x-16-in-White-Heavy-Duty-Shelf-Bracket-14835/202824731?N=bcdr#.UU4vW1eHuSo

I am wondering if I can get 2 of those for each shelf, and use drywall anchors, and put a shelf on top of that. I'm wondering if 50lbs would hold up in drywall with drywall anchors, or if it too much weight. Anyone know?

Also, anyone have any clue if I were to say buy 1 of those and mount it directly to the stud, then get a shelf to mount DIRECTLY to that - would something like that work even though it really only has 1 support on it? I'd be concerned about it topping over possibly, or just something going wrong.

Any ideas?
