We are glad to see you here and hope you make this one of your regular stops in the future. We have been collectively searching for people who have experience with these speakers so that we can gather some useful information such as that which you have already provided.
Assuming that I had a VERY high quality sub, like a dual driver HE 15, do you think that the 4.1's would be the best choice as mains and surrounds in a 7.1 system? From what I have seen concerning the new center and surrounds to be released, the ideal configuration appears to me to be:
2 Diva 2.1's for rears
2 of the new dipole surrounds for sides (or rears in a 5.1 setup)
1 of the new 3 way center
2 of either the 4.1's, 5.1's or 6.1's for mains
I see the 2.1's being the choice for rears due to the small size, easy mounting capability, and monopole configuration (which I believe is recommended by THX). Then the dipoles would serve as sides (or rears in a 5.1 system) for the very same reasons. The center would be a 3 way, which would be of benefit to creating natural sounding dialog, and then the big question would be which model to use as mains. (Of course, since I haven't had the chance to hear ANY model other than the 4.1's, this is purely speculation.) First question: Which models have you had the opportunity to hear and what are your thoughts on the various models?
Secondly, what, if any, advantages exist to using a particular model of Diva for mains? For example, if a user needed 2 full range speakers for mains (like those who listen to 2 channel analog would require), do the 6.1's offer any advantages over the 4.1's (like I would assume would be the case)? If the user had absolutely no need for full range mains (used a subwoofer in ALL modes), would the 4.1's (or even the 2.1's) serve just as well? Is there any other reason to choose one model over another? From my past experiences, more expensive and more elaborate isn't always
"better". Sometimes it is more of a matter of choosing the "right" speaker for the job at hand.
Third question: Would you also recommend 6 of the 4.1's in a 7.1 system, and why?
These questions have been directed to Ed, but everyone is invited to discuss this matter. Maybe John Kotches, John Johnson, or Mark Schifter, who have more intimate experiences, could help shed some light here also.
Oh, and John, your comments on frequency response and phase correction have really intrigued me. I'm going to have to hear this for myself, and soon, I hope http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif
