Sorry Lee but this trailer is not viewable from my location. I guess there's a geographical restriction limiting to viewers in the USA only. It's a bit odd as Avatar is releasing in multiple locations worldwide on the same date! I've seen it on another website though.

I'm looking forward to the Avatar toys. I'm going to get the cool looking helicopter [RDA Gunship] and RDA Amp Suit.

Star Trek made $72.5 mil in the opening three days. If Avatar can cross $100 mil in its opening three days [it is possible because it will be showing in more theatres] then there is a good chance that it can reach $350 in the US alone which would take its worldwide tally to well over $500 million.

Not to forget that this movie is the first part of 3 and the cost of the sets, props and miscellaneous equipment will be saved on the production of the other two movies.

I am looking forward to this one for sure. I just hope that there is depth in the story rather than focus on special effects only. Saying that, Transformers II ruled Hollywood this Summer and its plot was anything but ...

I'm thinking $300-$450 million in the US, and somewhere between 1.5-2.5 times that overseas.

Could be a lot higher. Remember, AVATAR will be playing at something like 2500 3D theaters in the USA and maybe another 1000 to 1500 worldwide. All those theaters charge a premium for a 3D film. From $3.50 to $5. That is really going to affect the BO take.

It really depends on the repeat watchability of the film.

Very true Lee. My max figures from above would put the final number at $1.125 billion, which would be incredible. That would put it right inline with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King which is second all-time at $1.129 billion. I hope this also leads to more action films being filmed with Cameron's technology.

'Avatar' introduces new technologies to 3D production

Interesting article Lee. Thanks. I enjoyed the description of what the technology is, and how it's being used in the filming process. Avatar will definitely be a game changer in the industry. The next Spiderman film should use this. Not being a fan of the trilogy thus far, a 3D treatment like Avatar's, could really be something special.

Ever since I saw IMAX 3D (I think it was call Living Seas), I have been a fan of the process.

The CGI movies like UP and Bolt are good, but I do long for something that looks real and not a fancy cartoon.

To me, going to the movies has always been an "event" and IMO, there have been no real technological advancements for quite some time (other than using IMAX in TDK) so I am really looking forward to Avatar.

I checked out the theater I will be seeing it at this past weekend when I went to see Ninja Assassin ( want to see Japanamation come to life - like Ninja Skroll - see this picture) and it looks good. 500 stadium seats with a big screen. Will probably see it mid-week after opening weekend.

I'm hoping my local cinema will have a midnight showing on the 17th. I will be watching this in 70mm IMAX 3D, Digital IMAX 3D, Digital 3D(RealD), 35mm 2D and Digital 2D if I can find one available. This will hopefully give me a good idea of all the technologies advantages and disadvantages. I've been informed that the 70mm IMAX projectors will be serviced before the 18th, so it will allow me to see the best possible presentation the format has to offer.

Not too long to go now. The excitement, nerves and anticipation in the Avatar camp must be sky high. I hope the movie does really well and has a very healthy showing in the box office worldwide. Cinema needs this.

Based on the numbers, the BO this year is up 8% with attendance also up 3%.

I suspect that 3D has something to do with the numbers and Avatar is supposed to have Knock Your Socks Off 3D.

With 3D coming to consumers next year, they really need to be sold on spending the extra money to bring 3D into their homes.

I would have loved to have seen it in IMAX 3D. Unfortunately, I am no longer near a real IMAX theater. One of the things I had to give up when I moved. Somethihng I will definitely miss as I attended 2 to 3 IMAX/IMAX 3D shows a month in Ft. Lauderdale.

That sucks Lee. There's something really special about IMAX, even with it's flaws with 3D. The immersion still sells me.

Haroon,
Not just the Avatar camp. I'm beyond excited. My birthday will be spent waiting in line see the first showing and get the best seat.

Well . . .

All is not totally lost - I think . . .

There is a museum near by that has something called a Dyna Theater which sounds like the old IWERKS big screen format = 8/70mm. They say it is 5 stories high which was the same size as the IMAX theater in Ft. Laud.

http://naturalhistoryfoundation.org/

When I attend in the next couple of weeks, I will post my experience.

They didn't say if they show 3D films. Hope you can enjoy it.

I'll post my impressions as soon as I've finished seeing it. Hopefully that will be early Friday the 18th morning.

For a movie lover and a lover of movie technology - hell of a birthday present!

No 3D that I know of - should be a big screen, high resolution experience, close to real IMAX. They only show docs there.

Absolutely. Good friends with me to enjoy it as well. Our Cineplex actually has a nice bar upstairs, so it will be a proper birthday party

That's the impression I got from the site. Are you still in Florida? Peter is always talking about a great theater with Dolby 3D in Miami.

No longer in Florida. Now in New Mexico. Traded the ocean for the desert and very happy with the change.

Only real problem is getting used to the cold weather again - it was 25 degrees this morning. My blood has thinned out from living in So. FL but it will thicken up in a couple of months.

Which theater is that?

Lee, what prompted the move?

I'm actually doing the exact opposite. I lived in Miami all my life up until I got in the Air Force and have since lived in cold climates. Now I'm going to Guam and I have to readjust all over again.

The one I'm going to, or the one Peter talks about in Miami? I'm guessing the latter. In that case, I don't know the name of it. PM Pete(AVS name CINERAMAX) for the details.

Don't worry Lee, you thicken up with some good Mexican food
