You will not find a "better" sub $1k 1080p projector. Others, sure. But not better.
I have the HD20. And while I didn't need a screen or mount. Costco has an incredible deal on the Mits HC3800. For only about $100 more than the HC3800 alone, you get the 2 year Costco warranty, Costco 90 day return policy, a free 2nd bulb, a 106" motorized screen, and a ceiling mount. Shipped.
If I didn't already have and want a fixed screen and a custom mount, this deal is awesome!
And the HC3800 certainly isn't less of a projector than the HD20. If you don't need or want the 2nd bulb, screen, and ceiling mount, then save the money and get the HD20. Otherwise, if you want the whole bundle, it's a great deal.
So back to your question, for around $1k there are about 3-4 projectors including the HD20 that are all pretty close in performance. Projector Central claims the HD20 is bang for the buck. But depending on what you might like. An extra $300-500 might get you something better. But then the question is if it's really $300-500 worth better. So far many say it's not. I am happy with the price/performance ratio of the HD20. And still think I can improve the black levels further and that $1000+ more would be needed to get significantly better blacks. But I don't feel that extra cost is worth it to me right now.
