I am almost embarrassed to say but I got it for $44.98 out the door (no sales tax in Oregon), open box and the back is missing from the remote but it works perfectly .

I almost got out the door with a 3D Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs bd as well but I wanted it checked before I left the store, the salesman grabbed the disc as soon as we tested the eject, lol.

* I would have returned the disc anyway, already have it.

I haven't played much with the settings though, so sorry I can't help there.

The 1000ES does play most every disc I've thrown at it, even scratched rentals.

When and where did you get this? I am in the market for one.

Alex...sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I was away for a while & couldn't remember what I set the player at. Apparently it wasn't much. The only thing I did was kick-up the Enhance adjustment to ''2.'' ''3'' added some distortion to the picture. Everything else (Picture Quality Mode, NR, Smoothing, etc) was left at factory default. However, as Laserfan corrected pointed out in a few posts above, ''one size doesn't fit all.'' In other words, this setting is what I happen to prefer. You may not. To my eyes (20/20 with glasses), with my set (Samsung 5271...wish I could up-grade!) sitting 8 to 9 feet away making this one adjustment presented a picture I enjoy watching. You may think it looks like... . It all boils down to personal preference. In any case the 1000ES is a great player in my book. It takes a little longer to boot-up in comparison to the Oppo, but (in my experience) far more reliable.

I don't remember where I left these, but it seems to me they are not at Factory Default i.e. I kicked each "in" a notch or so. I will try to remember to write them down next time I fire-up.

I do recall spending quite a bit of time experimenting with each setting, but that was many months ago.

I got it at a Best Buy Magnolia store that had one left over, I was lucky, they also had the Pioneer 320 for $99 and I picked up that too

My local best buy Magnolia is staffed by mean guys! They will never give a deal like that. I bought a Panny BDT300 for $200 from them and that was a one year old floor model. They gave it to me without the Wifi dongle and when I went back to ask for it, they claimed it did not come with one and then when I produced the proof, they asked me why I keep coming back!!! I had to call the 800 number to complain and magically they gave me the manual and the dongle.

I am actually considering returning the unit and getting an oppo 93. But if there is a Sony ES that is good and has 7.1 analog, I might consider it. I don't think I saw any of these in the local Magnolia though!

I picked up my Sony BDP-S1000ES from a Magnolia when they were clearing them out - but that was quite a while ago. It is mint condition - was sitting inside an entertainment center in the showroom looking like it had never been used. They let me look up the proper model number for the remote, and search through their parts drawer until I found the correct one (main differences are backlit and has a volume control for the headphone jack vs. typical Sony remotes). The USB memory card that comes with it was nowhere to be found, but for $89, I really didn't care. I picked up a 8gb Kingston slim USB memory card for around $8 as I recall & it works great. The player has been absolutely superb - and I would not hesitate recommend it to anyone if you can still grab one on closeout especially.
Closeout price is $99, IF you can find one. If it is like mine, scan the shelves up high on the wall - they often have some strays up there that no one knows about.

I've been trying to pick up a Pioneer VSX 23TXH that is left over, but so far they won't come down from the current clearance price of $349 - which isn't bad to be honest.
$99 would be a great price but the only thing I'd worry about is if the player was a floor model that looped 12 or more hours a day. Lots of wear and tear which would equal many lifetimes of a customers use......I know the floor model 1000s I saw at my local BB were always playing something and never shut off.

Agreed, but I do not know if Sony knows about it. I got a 1000 a few months ago (way less than a year) from a Sony dealer at the then hot price of ~$200. I registered it on Sony's Warranty web site as I always do as SOP. Last week I got a letter from Sony telling me that warranty was about to expire and that I should buy an extended warranty. I threw out the letter, but I think the costs to add three years to what they claimed was the standard one year warranty was more than I paid for the unit to begin with.

I wish now that I had not tossed the letter so I could call Sony and ask them what was going on. Maybe they are just trying to douple-dip on the warranty.

If Sony is like everyone else these days, I will probably get five more of these letters before the 1000 is even one year old. If so, Sony can expect a call.

Konica Tech put me on to the Options AV Settings that you tweak from the Options button during the time the DVD is playing. (He actually reads the manuals!). Greatly improved the video PQ!

From the 5000es thread about the 5 warranty.

Do you have the complete URL?

Check the thread on S5000ES page 58 #1712 for the link.

The link says it's a five year warranty and to disregard any verbage that implies it's a one year warranty.

It's trivial to find, just go to esupport and input the model.

Yeah I thought the same until I realized they have a 5 year warranty and then I would have kicked my own a$$ for not buying one .

Happy to report excellent results with the 120" front projection set-up, an obvious nicer image than the Panasonic BD35 that it replaced (which I paid $180 for a few years back).

Great buy, I'm thrilled with it for $45.

What color settings are you guys using Auto 4.4.2, 4.2.2 ,RGB (16-235) or RGB (0-255).

Levels setting will depend upon what type of display the player is connected to. When in doubt just use Auto, RGB should really only be used if connected to PC monitors or displays that actually calibrate out better in RGB. Aside from that, changing to RGB is adding another conversion and there by adding to the processing on the native blu ray image.

Please correct me if I'm wrong (how's that for asking for trouble?!), but I believe each is a "conversion," you (or the set, if "auto") are/is just picking a conversion method, so I don't think you're "adding" anything.
When set to AUTO, assuming the set is capable (which most are), you would generally be sending the signal that the player detects as proper for playback on that particular display.

If you feel like you are getting better black levels by sending RGB (especially 0-255) to a modern day HDTV what you are probably 'really' seeing is crushed blacks. BD is simply not native RGB nor is it native 0-255 (it's YCbCr 16-235 ).

There are exceptions out there regarding displays that actually perform better (more accurately) when using RGB but most of these are several years old or more. So yes the results here will vary by display.

Now with that said it does not mean that one cannot do all these 'conversions' and still calibrate out an accurate image. Switching to RGB is one thing but expanding 16-235 to 0-255 is not a step that should be done unless the display requires it (such as a pc monitor).

Interesting. Thanks.
In my case, the set is an RPCRT that's been tweaked and calibrated, so the calibration was done using 0 - 255 (and looks great, BTW).
So the take home lesson, again, is "Your milage may vary."

I've had this player for months now, after buying it on clearance at BB.

And the last couple of times I've played a Bluray, the audio started to crackle and pop out of the left two channels.

It only did it after about an hour into the film.

I cleared the cache, and hoped that fixed the problem.

But tonight I tried to play another movie in it, and at 1:20:00, it did it again, started to crackle and pop.

I noticed the first time this happened the Bluray had a DTS HD MA track, and tonight it happened on a PCM Uncompressed soundtrack, so that doesn't seem to effect it.

Any thoughts?????

What really makes me mad is I can't find the receipt, and I never registered it on sony.com, partly because I got it so cheap and I figured it was a Sony ES player, what could go wrong? LOL

Best buy might have an electronic receipt.
