The Book of Eli - Page 2

I tend to gravitate toward sweet rolls myself, but ... the sepia/washed-out tone somewhat turned me off the film. I like color.

I don't know what you're talking about. Perhaps you should read my post again.

You corrected your misspelling, you sly fox!

The movie starts in 10 minutes. Come on Denzel...

Again, your accusations of improper grammar baffle me. The edit to my previous post was simply to alter my syntax in the last sentence. Never once did I misspell the word "role".

Dbuudo, let us know what you think about the movie.

Really lost me after he went "nuts" and put on the lipstick...

So, I guess you didn't care much for The Matrix, Terminator 2 & 4, or Minority Report? I have no problem with filters, or stylized cinematography. But, as with any film, if you're going to go the "extra mile", make sure it's worth my time (having a brilliant story and screenplay to match). The Matrix, T2, and Minority Report-cool! T4-fail.

My review:

The Book Of Eli(2010)
Total 3.4/5
In a post apocalyptic world, one man is on a mission to take a piece of literature across his country. This film left me slightly underwhelmed. Many parts of the production are well done, but I left the theater feeling that there was more that could've been done with the story and characters. Story wise, it is interesting and does have nice elements of mystery. However, some of the characters failed to really capture me emotionally and lacked any depth. Whether it was how they were written or how they were portrayed, I'm not entirely sure. I'm inclined to believe the former. The pacing was somewhat laboured and the dialog felt stale at times. There is enough well directed, dynamic action to keep audiences entertained that felt new and exciting in every scene. Overall, it is a good film that many will enjoy, but I doubt it will reach high on anyone’s top movie list.

Good impressions here:

Still, the Hughes Brothers have created something awesome, from the almost black-and-white look of the movie to the clear tributes to the MAD MAX movies, A BOY AND HIS DOG, and several other post-apocalyptic works. But they make it all the more fascinating by turning an experiment in working religion into a geek-friendly environment, in a largely respectful way. Even at its most outrageous, THE BOOK OF ELI still held my interest and made me increasingly curious where this fairly simple story would take us. And I never could have predicted where this tale ends up. January releases continue to impress me, and this maybe most of all.

I'm gonna wait and see this one next weekend. And hopefully get to Avatar this weekend. This, and Avatar are 2 movies I can't wait for to premier on Dtv. I gotta see these now. Hope they're worth it. I haven't been to the theatre since 300.

I enjoyed Eli more than I did Avatar...The Ending is Just WOW......My wife figured it out in the first 30 minutes....

I enjoyed nearly every aspect of this very good film. An exceptional achievement by The Hughes Brothers....

Denzel was refreshing and precise in his role as usual. Gary Oldman... terrific. Kinda reminded me of his crazy days when he played that pimp in True Romance.

Eitherway, The Book Of Eli was one of the best movies I've seen in the last year... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

44% on RT. About in line with what I expected; Maybe a bit lower to be honest.

Loved this movie, totally not what I expected but pleasantly better. It'll, sadly, go into cult status due to our culture and it's mainstream view on

I enjoyed it and would love to see a prequel.

Wow, wow, wow.....so glad I did not spend money to see this one.
I can't believe this. This is like when I had high hopes for I Am Legend, only to be crushed 5 times over.

Why would they advertise such as a huge action, and then......

basically slience through the entire film. Not much dialouge, not much action, just a quiet, boring movie. Maybe 4 action sequences tops.

And this. I still don't know what this means.

Eli is blind, and the book is in Braille?

Edit: Forget it, I just read the plot on Wiki, and yep, that's exactly the plot. Oh yeah...

Big letdown for me.

Great movie! The look and feel of the movie is perfect. Denzel and Oldman do a great job. The fights are brutal and violent. The plot is good and the twist at the end takes this movie to another level. Great movie to start out 2010. I'll go back this weekend to see it again.

It's that obvious, huh?

Seriously, I have no clue what could be so uniquely interesting about this movie.

Sad, sad film.

As in the level occupied by Mr. Plot Twist, M. Night Shyamalan?

Yes.

The kind of twist that makes you want to see the movie again because it changes the way you looked at the film and you want to connect things. I liked the movie the way it was, but that twist took it over the top.

Looking forward to checking it out for myself, but it may not happen till the BD is released. Theater time and babysitters are just too hard to come by to possibly waste it on a sub par movie (if that's the case).
I was looking forward to seeing it. Then I found out the director used the washed out look (little to no color) for the film which I personally can't stand.

Will that keep you from ever watching the movie, though? I guess I could understand that, since I'm the same way with shakycam movies. If I find out one is shot with an overly aggressive hand held camera, I'll likely pass on it.

Well I understand it if you don't like that, but it gave the movie a distinct look. It's not like I Am Legend in which the colors looked very nice because the damage was done to the people and not the planet, in this movie the world was severely damaged and those colors gave it that look. See it if you can get passed that, it's definitely worth it.

I'm guessing that at the end, Mila's character has heard the entire book, from listening to Eli reciting it for the guy who's copying it. And now she's returning home to kill the bad guys, or just looking to kill evildoers. And she too will be protected by God, because she believes strongly in the book, and has the ultimate faith just as Eli did.

Agree?

A nice Christian tale, but certainly not what I expected, at all.
