Canon HF20 / HF200 Official Owner's Thread - Page 26

Hello,

Do we have to sent it back for fw update? Hf200, I just don't trust the service techs.

Also, I can manage a USB cable and just flash it my self. Has anyone got there hands on a leaked copy of the fw?
I tried to get them to let me do it too.. but they won't...
If you go through the motions of sending it in, Make sure you print out a copy of this link: http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/co....mc_id=C126149

and include it--Along with your letter indicating that it is a FREE upgrade....
As you might get a $232+ bill for the "Repair"...
I did, twice in an email, and once via snail mail.... I finally, after contacting them twice on it... by phone (Call the repair center directly)...
Get it Free....

I'm waiting for the return of the camera now...

Here's a partial copy of the email they sent:

Dear JAN :

We have received your equipment for evaluation and repair. Based on our initial examination, we will start the necessary repairs at no charge to you. You can expect the repair to be completed and returned back to you within approximately 7 business days* from the date shown above. There is no need to respond to this notice.

Please note that in the unlikely event that any additional internal damage is found due to liquid/water, sand, corrosion, battery leakage or impact (such as dropping the unit), a revised estimate will be sent for your authorization, since these conditions are specifically excluded from warranty coverage.

Thank you for purchasing Canon products and for allowing us this opportunity to serve you.

Best Regards,
Canon Factory Service Center

My camera is being updated to V1.0.5.0 now, and when it comes back I'll check to see what the differences are...

I've been told that a firmware change list from V1.0.0.0 to V1.0.5.0 WILL BE INCLUDED with the camera on it's return... Did you get one?

No, I didn't got any list.
My HF200 was with 1.0.3.0 firmware and battery charging and remaining life time worked with previous firmware

Got my HF200 back from V1.0.5.0 upgrade...
My Non OEM battery results are same... Still prompt before use, no Time remaining... but didn't have this before.... with V1.0.0.0 & Non-OEM batteries...

Didn't get firmware history... Will have to complain...
EDIT Interesting.... The upgraded the firmware and didn't change my settings one bit!
Even the clock is still set the same!

The Nametag sticker that I had on inside of camera above cardslot and buttons was removed, so they must have had to gain access to inside to update firmware.. ??

I Have attempted a couple escalations at the Canon support folks regarding Firmware History, but they steadfastly refuse to give out that info...

I tried....

You'd think I was asking for their bank account or something......

I do not trust them to open my camcorder up, they will make up bull snit things.

This is not fair, they should release a flash firmware update not a stupid 'open up your camra and change a firmware chip'.

I'll never buy canon again. I have had too many bad experience with canon tech support.
If you think Canon support is bad, You should encounter Panasonic Broadcast Support.....

It can be summarized in 3 words....

"Send It In"

No doubt that occasionally firmware updates break products beyond repair...
However, I do believe that Any Tech Support bench Tech would not intentionally break a product on purpose....

The un-fortunate thing is they don't let you do this in the field...

With TV's even being upgradeable by owners (I did my DLP last week)...
It's just a bit embarassing that Canon felt we're not worthy to do it....
Actually, they are missing a bet here.... Think of the fumble-fingered end users trashing cameras.... and Canon rushing to help them... for a fee..... !
They really missed the boat on this one!!!

Im not sure what you mean, calling the end users fumble fingered.

As for canon rushing to help anyone, they can just make a firmware flash, (which they did) and post it online. whats the problem here?
I agree with you.... Should have posted firmware updates online....

I'm not saying Every Consumer is "Fumble Fingered".... Just Many of them....

With Consumer devices (TV's, BR Players, computer hardware) all becoming firmware upgrade-able.... Canon's approach to "Send it here for update" is either based upon them Having to go inside to do the upgrade (my post about the ID Label being removed because it was over cover access screws), or, the 1980's approach that "No-One is smart enough to do a firmware upgrade.....

Heck... Just last night I was doing firmware upgrade in hard drives!!!

I'm attempting again to get info on firmware history for the HF200 camera...

I'm suggesting we each send an email to:

carecenter@cits.canon.com

requesting firmware history to V1.0.5.0 so that we can update our operations manuals with the current information...
Dear Jan:

My name is Erik, and I'm a specialist here at Canon. Your email was
escalated to me for a response.

I apologize for the confusion regarding the firmware updates. A change
from version 1.0.0.0 to 1.0.5.0 is not significant; no features were
added to the camcorder and nothing was taken away. This is the extent
of the documentation we have available.

I'm sorry there is not more information for you.

Sincerely,

Erik

See, this is precisely why I dont trust canon support.

They have a 'sit on your hands and do nothing approach'.

That's why I m worried to send in my hf200 for the firmware update.

The lot of EM r a bunch of useless €üñtś.

I don't even care, I'll just. Stick it out with class 6 cards.
But I thought with your approach you'd love to prod them via email.... Maybe they will listen to you?

What does "prod" mean?

What is "with your approach" mean?

Why are you criticizing me?

I have had one too many bad experiences with canon repair, and I don't want to end ever down that avenue again.

At this point I am so sick and f'ed up with canon.
I figured since you seemed negative toward them, it would give you a reason to request the information.... simple as that.... If we don't all try to get and share information, we're stuck in the same boat.

I did one step more. I called canon repair center that will do the firmware update and ask them to do it for me while I'm there.

They said no, not possible. i Have to leave my camcorder with them for 10 days so they can do a 2 min job of a firmware update.

Im not going to bring it to them. Ill just stick it out with class 6. I hope they will post the firmware update on the website soon.
That is kind-of dumb, I agree.... You'd think it would be faster and more efficient to let you walk in, and not incur any shipping $$.... Canon emailed a Prepaid Shipping Label to me, and so it didn't cost me anything to get the new firmware... as Canon paid Shipping both ways...

I got the Mode 10 card back from neighbor (he borrowed it when I found I couldn't use it) and it works fine in camera now....
I'd contacted battery supplier and they didn't know problem coming after firmware update. They checked and surprised when current chip didn't work after update. New battery version will be out in couple of weeks.
Teme
Please post again after they send you new battery version...
I knew that my Non-OEM Batteries did not have a chip to show the time in them....
I didn't know that MFG's had cracked that.... But I saw some on Ebay last weekend and thought of your post....
If they succeed in working with V1.0.5.0 firmware.... I'd be interested......

I just contacted 3 different Ebay sellers of batteries for HF200 if their batteries work fully with the new V1.0.5.0 firmware in an HF200 camera...
Each Seller replied it works with HF200. When I specifically (a 2nd time) asked if it works with V1.0.5.0 firmware, One said he would contact the MFG....
If It comes back positive, I'll post a link.
2 of 3 people on Ebay that I specifically asked if they knew for certain that their batteries would work with HF200 camera's with V1.0.5.0 firmware have answered "maybe not" . One of the two worded it as if he knew a problem had existed before... possibly with an earlier firmware update.... One indicated that he would ask his manufacturer, but I haven't heard back from him/them.

The aftermarket batteries I have work on V1.0.0.0 and V1.0.5.0 firmware, with a prompt saying camera could not 'read' battery... you hit "OK" and continue on, but without an indicator...

I just make sure they batteries are fully charged, and use them as 2nd battery so they are less apt to run out of charge...

If someone gets a positive response on this issue, please post....

Suddenly, after a couple of years where the HF200 worked fine to transfer to the computer, now when I plug the USB cable into the computer and camera it does NOT trigger the pop-up to tranfers video via Pixala and photos via Windows Live or whatever. Nothing happens. I tried different USB cables and different computers, no help. It is still possible to read the pictures and videos off the SD card itself by plugging that into a card reader.

Although nothing happens when I hook up the USB cord, and even if I wait one minute or longer, when I turn off the power supply I get the warning message: "Task in Progress Do Not disconnect the power supply."

So it seems like the camera knows it is trying to open a connection to the computer but it just can't do it.

Suggestions, theories?
Today I've been contacted from ebay shop.
Unfortunately they never got promised updated battery version and make decision to refund my payment.
So still searching working BP-827 battery for camcorder
post #778 of 817
The folks I contacted also didn't know....
One suggested buying one to see if it would work....

Oh well... at least if I keep them all well charged, and change batts before I am even close to needing to... I'm ok....

But put me in the pool of people looking for NON OEM Batteries that work with the new camera firmware!
I don't know what have been happen?
Yesterday I got battery charger from post and charged to full my both batteries what HF200 didn't recognize. Today camcorder recognize both batteries and now it shows battery lifetime and I can charge batteries on camera
I'm using this battery and now I'm waiting my 3rd >3000mAh battery for testing
