Here's what we know for sure:
A ton of people posting in these forums have had G10s as long or longer than Orta.
The only DATA we have - vs. perceptions - is that of Orta. He has measured black levels before and after that show a real (outside of the error of the measurement) increase in his black levels.
While some others have chimed in after Orta posted his data and said "My black levels are definitely higher too!" no one was claiming to see a jump in black levels until after Orta posted his data. I am NOT saying others aren't seeing a real increase - just that we have no other measured results showing an increase in black levels, and no one was complaining about a sudden overnight change in black levels until they read Orta's comments and data.
We really need some more measurements. I am going to remeasure my 46G10 (busy weekend so probably next weekend) and see if I can compare to my original calibration numbers, BUT I don't know how many hours I had on mine when I did my first calibration. It was certainly well over 200 hours, because I did the break in slide routine for at least 120 hours, and then spent some time investigating what meter to get to learn to do my own calibration. Looking at my receipts - I got my 46G10 end of May, got my Spyder3 meter end of July, so probably did my calibration some time in early August or so. So I probably had at least 400 or more hours on mine when I did the calibration. So probably not a good before/after piece of data to look at the black level now.
Two things: I've been VERY happy with my G10. I bought a Samsung 850 for my den, just to have one of each (panasonic and samsung) and thus be able to argue in threads of Panny fanboys and Sammy fanboys.
But I didn't see a huge improvement in the picture quality of the Samsung even though it costs a lot more (to be fair, I had calibrated my Panny and not the Samsung) AND I returned the Samsung after trying two of them because they both had that extremely annoying constant buzz that there are threads about. (Nothing like watching an intense movie, going to a quiet scene full of tension, and hear that "bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" from the TV in the background.)
So I have a 54inch G10 being delivered - any moment now, waiting for the delivery guy. I will take black level measurements right away to have starting level numbers, then take black level measurements probably every weekend, to see if I see a big jump. I hope others do the same so we can have some real data.
Sorry for the long winded reply!
