Here is what I sent to and received from Panasonic today regarding the issue. I would like to note that I measured my set at 999 hours and at 1020 hours, so I would say it is a safe bet that 1000 hours is a jump point.
First, I would like to thank Panasonic for fixing the THX issue on my TV. The tech, Mike Gerber, came out to my house yesterday to apply the FW update and the colors on the set look beautiful! (Case ######### - TCP50G10 - THX Picture Mode (VOC))
Now, I have a new issue. I have been reading rumors on the internet (both on C-net and the AVS forum) about the potential of rising black levels in the 12G Panasonic Plasmas due to predefined voltage increases. Unfortunately I did not have the equipment to measure the black level of my set when it was purchased on September 12, 2009. However I had taken several measurements since December when the set had 700 hours on it and the black level consistently measured at .018 ft/L. These measurements were nearly double that of what a new set has measured according to reputable ISF and THX calibrators across the country who are getting measurements of .005 to .008 ft/L around the 100 hour of usage mark. However, I was still content with my sets black levels, because I had no proof that my set did not start at .018 ft/L. However, after the THX FW update I took measurements to verify the color decoding was corrected in the same positive way my eyes were telling me it was, but to my dismay I found that my black levels were now .030 ft/L. My set eclipsed the 1000 hour mark which was a rumored voltage jump point and I have scientific proof that the black levels on my set increased. The sad part about the increase is now the black levels on my G10 are worse than that of my nearly 2 year old Samsung LCD panel that measures consistently at .025 ft/L. The main reason I purchased a plasma over a LCD is the black level performance. Now my Panasonic plasma performs worse in this department than my Samsung LCD.
Will you please change my case # from the THX Picture mode problem to report the set as having a poor black level problem? I very much appreciate the way the THX picture mode was handled and only hope that Panasonic will do the same with the black level issue.
Thank you for taking the time to confirm the firmware update resolved the THX Picture Mode Green Tint issue. It is greatly appreciated.
We are also aware of the Black Level comments posted to the AV Science Forum and have forwarded this to our engineers for investigation.
Once we receive the results of that investigation, we will contact customers who reported this to the Panasonic Customer Call Center (USA) to inform them of these findings. You will not have to continually call the call center for an update.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Thank you for choosing Panasonic.
