Alan Ladd was short. And in Shane it showed in spades. But Shane's greatness lied in it's direction, photography and script, not necessarily in Ladd's performance, although I thought he was adequate.
Audie Murphy was not only short, but was baby faced to boot. Probably one of the reasons he never got beyond B pictures. And let's face it, he only got acting jobs because he was a war hero. My mom loves the guy, btw.
Steve McQueen could'a been 4" 9 and he still would've been good. I'll use a sports analogy- he played bigger than he was. Dude had cool to burn. Besides, I'm from his birthplace, so I'm a little biased. Westerns to me call for larger than life figures. Eastwood, Wayne, Scott and Cooper. But if you're down with Tommy "doin' what a man's gotta do", more power to you. I just can't see it working for me. I'll admit I've never cared for the guy's work.
