The Shining was already remade into a TV movie, which while more faithful to the book (IIRC), wasn't as entertaining.

"The Exorcist" is one movie classic I've always avoided. A credible, well-told story where the bad guy is Satan himself...just too much for me. I prefer my good-versus-evil stories a bit more fantastical.

Though based on true events, that movie is entirely fantastical. And it seemed to be more about the priest's inner conflicts, IMO. Then again, I haven't seen it in a very long time.

The "bad guy" in The Exorcist is Pazuzu, an ancient demon, not Satan himself. FYI.

Only the wife was a casting improvement.

Actually, Shelley Duvall was great in her role in Kubrick's "The Shining." Poor thing was put through hell by the director, and it showed in her performance (during which her character was put through hell). If your post is an indication that the replacement in the TV version was more of a looker, I'd say that's irrelevant to the Wendy role.

I agree. I think that The Shining is another Kubrick masterpiece. It is simultaneously funny and creepy. Better yet, there is not a slow moment in it. I thought the the quintessentially weird Shelley Duvall was perfectly cast as the isolated, scared to death, wife and mother. Brrrr!

Guilty. I actually have no problem with Duvall's performance in the first film, but Rebecca De Mornay did a fine job in the remake, looker or not.

Thought of a movie that could be remade, and be much better than the first movie: "Swamp Thing." There were some great stories in that comic, but the first movie was notable only for Adrienne Barbeau's ... contributions.

Although I did not see the 1997 TV miniseries based on The Shining, I have long admired Rebecca De Mornay's beauty and talent. I thought that she was terrific in the short lived John From Cincinnati.

You have to give Boyle credit for having picked a movie that at least left plenty of room for improvement. In a career filled with bad performances, Stallone's as Judge Dredd may have been his worst. The film was universally panned for good reason. Judge Dredd proved -- again -- that whenever Stallone plays anybody but Rocky he's likely to be awful.

I would say that one definitely qualifies.

I liked Stallone in Cliffhanger. Or at least, I didn't find his acting offensively horrible. He seemed pretty tame in that one. Never saw Cop Land, so I can't comment on his performance there.

Now wait a little minute....'Dredd was Rocky....in space! I love this movie; from Rob Schneider's comic relief, to Dredd's constantly rebooting bike, to the 'cannibal brothers'; hilarious stuff. JD is fabulously over-the-top! I hope no one took this movie very seriously...

Now if they want to do a mature take on it, why not?

All I can say is that IMDB voters gave Judge Dredd an average vote of 4.8 and among the critical reviews of Judge Dredd collected on Rotten Tomatoes, critics generally were only 15% favorable and, are you ready, the Top Critics were 0% favorable! That sounds about right to me.

Wow; you had to go and pull the 'numbers' card. Not that RT means anything to me, LOL!

Judge Dredd had only one memorable moment for me: "I AM the law!"

But Stallone has been good outside "Rocky." The final "Rambo" movie had a decent Stallone turn, and "Cop Land" was quite good.

Rotten Tomatoes reviews are resources, no more no less. Like all resources, they require analysis. Unfortunately there is a distressing tendency here and elsewhere for posters who have posted an opinion on one issue or another to denigrate a resource that disagrees with them. In any event, I wasn't trying to tell you that you were wrong to like Judge Dredd, only that almost everybody else who expressed an opinion disliked it. The reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes were almost unanimous in their dislike of the film and most IMDBb voters also thought it was a bad movie, as did I. Make of that what you will.

This is exciting news! I loved the original John Wayne movie but the book upon which it was based was MUCH darker. There is a lot the Coens could do with the source material and I would be interested to see what it is.

Highlander reboot? Will we finally get a good-looking and good-sounding release of the original?
