I have been following this thread with great interest and thanks to your inputs, I finally took the plunge and got the TX-NR807 set up although not fully. Here are some initial observations.

First my setup:

- Panasonic TH-50PZ800U
- Onkyo TX-NR807
- Oppo BDP-83
- Dish Network VIP 622 DVR
- Polk Audio speakers (RT1000i fronts, LS fx/35 surrounds, PSW 450 subwoofer, JBL center)

1. First time set up took quite a while because of confusion arising from the designations of the surround speakers.
2. Several times I had video dropouts and audio dropouts -- power reset button did the trick.
3. Audyssey setup is awesome.
4. Clean sound from the amp/speakers.
5. Calibration DVD that came with the Oppo BDP 83 is good, but I don't quite know how else to better my colors. THX preset mode from the TV works just fine.
6. Default settings from Oppo to receiver are working fine for me. In other words, I let Oppo take care of the data encoding.
7. The tuner for FM sounds terrible even though I had followed directions and I live within 5 miles of most radio stations I listen to.
8. SACD over DSD blew my mind. Earlier I used to play my SACDs via analog inputs to my old receiver (Yamaha RXV-1200).

Things to complete setup
1. Networking the components to use Ethernet ports on all devices. I'm considering SlingLink Turbo 4-port. Any suggestions?
2. Install HD Radio and perhaps iPod adapter. Need advice/suggestions on whether this is worth pursuing.
3. Start playing Pandora/last.fm/internet radio etc. once the network setup is complete.

Thanks in advance for your inputs prior to this posting and any suggestions you may have.

Happy listening!

Andy

Do you have an xbox already? I use that for streaming media through the system from my pc. Then to hardwire ethernet to the components I have a D-Link 8-port splitter.

I don't know what you get with HD radio so maybe you'll want it but it can't hurt to see if you get enough using Pandora. And if you have your iPod synced to your computer/NAS you can always just play songs from the computer/NAS through the 807.

Hello and Happy New Year to everybody.
Sorry for my english, but it is not native for me.
I'm using Onkyo 807 from a week and I have one very annoying problem. I have sattelite system with Dreambox 800HD. It is connected to the receiver trough DVI-to-HDMI cable. When I'm watching TV (it doesn't matter HD or SD) suddenly get the message "No signal" on the display of the 807 and the TV screen become blue. If I switch to another input and then back to the current input, signal came again and I can continue watching. This happen very often and I don't know what to do. Onkyo don't have service in my country. I sent them email, but still no answer.
I tried to use another input, but the problem persist again. I have the latest firmware, did a reset, tried all settings for upconversion and the result is the same. You are my last hope to solve this problem. Any suggestions are welcome.

It must be nice getting thousands of channels for the price of your Dish and Receiver I know I read a lot about it on AVforum which mainly has members from outside the US

Thanks Judd! Looks like I'll stay with TWC for now. I called them and they offerred to give me the current "promotional" pricing for new subscribers. Still more expensive than Dish, but close enough to make it not worth the hassle of changing. This will get me through another year, by which time (hopefully) U-Verse will be available in my neighborhood & I can make the switch to IP TV...

Thanks, Alex. I can't read german, but I change the cable and the problem is still here. Today I have ordered a new cable (very expensive) with gold plated connectors. Tomorrow I will try and post the result. Any new solutions are welcome.

What about bell expressvu. Their HD tv has hdmi outs and it doesn't matter where you live in the country. I've been using bell now for a couple of years and can't complain about their HD feed.

Our Onkyo 807 has a pretty powerful amp. I have been looking at different amps. McIntosh, Emotiva, etc. I have been thinking about buying either a 7channel or perhaps even one for fronts and one or two for surrounds. Is it needed? My Jamo's are not rated for killer power output. Infact there rated at about what the 807 puts out, but people who go with a external amp say they get cleaner sound and don't need to turn the volume up has high. How many of you have a external amp or amps hooked to your 807 and what is are your opinions?

Thanks
Judd

Some cable/sat boxes don't communicate well with the 807. I recently got an HD cable box when I finally got an HDTV and it doesn't seem to talk to the 807 using HDMI. Also, the DVI-to-HDMI might be screwing things up, although that is something that Onkyo does recommend doing so probably not that. Can you go out component? Problem with that is you can then only get 720p to your TV if you input component to the 807.

Someone posted recently (last 3-4 pages I think) about how they had to turn things on in a certain order to get the signal to work properly. You could try experimenting with that.

Hi ... I see that you have already ordered a new and expensive HDMI cabel, so this problem may well be solved upon insitalling the new cable ..... I only have one other thought; I wonder if the cable you are using now is really long? I think I remember hearing of a problem kind of like yours and the problem was that the person was using a lower quality, very, very long HDMI cable ..... thus the signal would become weak.
Yes, the supplied cable with my Dreambox is 2 meter long. I bought today 3 meter with better quality than the supplied one, but still cheap, just to test. The problem is not solved. Tomorrow I will get professional cable, only 1 meter long. I'm really hope it will solve this annoying trouble. Thanks to all of you, guys. I will post the results later.

I've run into a very narrow issue with audio during playback of shows recorded on my DVR.

My ReplayTV 5000 series DVR is fed from my Motorola (TWC) digital cable box via S-video and RCA audio. The Replay outputs to my 807 via S-video and digital optical audio. (I know. I know. It's time for an HD DVR, but TWC's blows. Plus, my Replay has lifetime activation)

I have the 807 set to All Channel Stereo for the DVR input. Generally, this works just fine. However, when watching recordings that originally ran in HD (recorded from TWC's HD feed) on the local Dallas ABC affiliate, the audio level is extremely low relative to any other recordings.

On other recordings, I usually have to turn the volume up louder than for live TV (say -35 to -30dB for recordings vs. -40 to -35dB for live). But for the ABC recordings, I consistently have to crank it to -20 to -15dB. And when I do that, there's a very noticeable hiss present.

Switching audio modes on the 807 (to, say, THX Cinema) reduces the hiss, but doesn't eliminate. So far, nothing I've tried seems to solve this problem. I can only reduce the hiss somewhat.

Anyone else run into this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey guys quick question for you. I was just at an Audio store here in Edmonton Alberta and was told to get either the Yamaha Elite or Higher end Harmon Kardon for a receiver since he said there were tests done and the outputs to the speakers are better than Onkyo! I was just wondering if I made the right choice on buying the 807 to power a Paradigm Monitor 11 system?? Thanks for your help.

I have a 25' HDMI cable going from my 807 to a samsung plasma and have never lost connection. Have you tried eliminating your AVR to see if it is actually the problem?

first i'd ask what tests and by who.. if they stutter it's just a sales trick.. And if it was Audio 5.1 off Argyll then it was for sure a scam.. Go see the guys at Adreneline Audio .. they might not have the biggest selection but they are full of info and won't steer you wrong.. They have a car and home side.. they also custom build hme theaters if you want to go that route.

Find a AVR that meets your needs... that way you'll be happy with it.. imo.. HK is nowhere near what it once was and Yamaha never met my expectations.. I have a 805, a 807 and I installed a 876 at work for our master control area.. Very happy with all 3

Haha how did you know it was Audio 5.1! Thats awesome! It did seem like a sales trick since they wanted me to buy everything there. I just got the 807 the other day and need speakers! Does Adrenaline Audio sell Paradigm?? Where is Adrenaline Audio located? Thx for your help man!

I am getting ready to buy the Onkyo 807 and have a question that I have searched for an answer on this sight but have been unable to find the answer. Here are my components.

TV = Hitachi rear projection (component input, no HDMI available)
STB - Dish Network vip 722 (HDMI and component output)
DVD - Sony (HDMI and component output)
Wii game system (yellow, red, white composite output)

Since my TV is limited to component 1080i input, what cable hookup would be the best for my situation. Should I use HDMI to th 807 from the STB and DVD, or use component cable to the 807? Since I am using the component out to tv, will the 807 still upconvert non HD channels on my dish receiver and DVD regardless if I use HDMI or component to the 807?

Let me know how you like it! I currently have the Paradigm Monitor 11's for my front, with the Mini Monitors for my rear surround with a Paradigm Reference series for my center channel. Are you planning on using the bi-amp feature for the front speakers?

I currently have the Onkyo 801 and I haven't had any complaints in the power department.

Take care,

Adreneline is just down the road on Calgary Trail S. 5720 104 Street. I don't think they are a paradigm dealer but I think if you demo one of their definitive technology speakers you'll find a new level of audio excellence.. I sound like a salesman don't I?.. yeesh.. I picked up a couple tower speakers BP7001SC's and it makes the paradigm I demo'd at the time pale in comparison. imo AV equipment is subjective and you really need to take the time and demo the equipment you want.. Just cuz it's "insert megabrand here" doesn't mean it'll make you happy. The Onk lineup isn't perfect and each AVR seems to have it's own personality, but i've been happy with mine.. and the local Onk rep out of Calgary is a pretty good guy and will answer any questions you have. Service goes a long way with me.

A5.1 is just there for the sale.. like most businesses I guess.. but they are blind to the dollar.. I once showed the owner the banding issue on the Sharp D52U lineup and he was blind to it even though the screen looked like a checkerboard.. I won't buy there simply out of principle. That and I find their prices about 15-30% higher than compared outlets.. The comes back to what I said about being subjective.. someone else might think A5.1 is amazing.. I simply don't.

**Edit**
Just checked the Paradigm website it looks like audio ark and a5.1 are the two paradigm reps in edmonton.. would think there would be more...? Stony AVU in stony plain sells them as well.. might get a good deal in a rural town.. or they might see you coming and make you squeal like a pig.... have fun..:-)

My living room size wouldn't really work for the ADP's (Unless I mounted them on the ceiling) so I went with the Mini Monitors plus they were a LOT cheaper than the ADP's when I bought my equipment.

If you budget and living room size/layout allow for it, I'd go for the ADP's!
