I hadn't done any firmware update and was wondering if in fact I should. All operations have been normal so my worries are put to rest.

Thanks again Mike.

You're welcome. Just for reference,: Setup-> Hardware Setup-> Firmware Update-> version on mine reads 1241-3002-0010-9120

Have a new 807 and have a question about the subwoofer setting. Have all five speakers set to 80htz crossover and the subwoofer set to 80htz and subwoofer volume at about 30%. Will Audyssey set the subwoofer to the proper lever?

i have the 180 - I have two subs, one that I use specifically for center channel. currently i simply speaker wire out to the sub and from the sub to the center channel.

I am wondering if with this new receiver since it has two sub outputs, if I can set one up specifically for the center channel and the other for the rest of the system?

I've had my 807 for a week now and have lost the sound once and the network connection once. Both times unplugging the receiver momentarily fixed the problem. I have the latest firmware. Tomorrow I will try resetting the receiver. Not too pleased!

Both of you guys are running 180's right? Would the version be the same as the 807? Or am I a version behind? My receiver was shipped on 2/26/10 and had just come from the factory after a lengthy back order (I had ordered it Jan. 29).

Yes, I have a 180 but I wouldn't be so sure the firmware code and release designation would be the same for the 180 vs 807. I would email Onkyo and specify your code version, see what they say is current.

Its not on Onkyo site yet but there are spec sheet links, go to the thread that talks about the new 708, this thread contains pdf of both the 708 and 808 along with spec's and photos.

Since some new owners are still reporting the "clicking of relays" with the 807 and its' heat issuse I'm now looking at the 808 with its USB port [USB fan ready] and hopefully click free listening.

It's very feature rich for the price and the heat isn't a problem, at least for me, but I don't use the video processor so that might make the difference.

I bought it becasue my Denon didn't have Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume. Getting network connectivity, PLIIz and DSX were pluses and I've switched from 7.1 to 5.1 with DSX wides. Really provides a great soundstage and I don't miss the back's at all.

I'll also say that, while the Denon had MultEQ XT, I think that dialogue has more presence now. The Denon did a better job with my sub but I've read that there's no difference in the sub filtering, EQ to EQ XT....don't know......but the RC180 sets the sub too hot for my liking. I just turn it down at the sub, that way the receiver can't keep track of the change and it works fine.

Anyway, I'm very happy with it. And it's nice to run Pandora straight from the router vs the Denon iPod dock I had to use before.

I rate it a best buy at current close-out pricing.

Yours is the same as the 180's, mine must be a version behind?!

I came very close to purchasing the 180, it was the subtle differences but mainly the 25 watt difference that sold me on the 807.

Does the 807 retain the settings when unplugged? Could find no reference in the manual.

Thanks,

Got one of those $499 bargains at Fry's for a HT-180. Had a TX676 for about 10 years and never a single issue.

Hooked it all up, went to power it up and all I get is a click and a blinking red light.

Disconnected all speakers to make sure there wasn't a short, and same thing.

So, I will box it up and return it tomorrow... Very disappointed. I put a lot of hours and work into running two new wires for 7.1 and rewiring my whole rank.

Lesson learned: Plug the dang thing in, as soon as you get home, and make sure it powers up.

crap.

Noticed you live in Dallas. I was in the Arlington store on Sat and they had several on the shelf. Shouold have no problem in exchanging it. You can probably find one closer to Dallas, but just in case you can't.

Thanks. Had to unplug mine for a couple of days and was not looking forward to redoing everything. That is good news.

Yes, even when you do a firmware upgrade it does not wipe out any of your settings. Just picks up right where you had it set.
Just did the latest firmware update from one that was likely a rather old version. The clicking sound is less frequent, but definitely louder when it happens (i.e. between Stereo and Dolby D when watching Fuse on Comcast). Lame

Hi guys,

First of all I would like to thank you guys for spending time to write all these very informative reviews.

I am new to AV and HT receivers. After reading the thread for almost a week now (haven't completed all pages though, was only half way through) I have finally decided to get TX-NR807 within the week with the following set up:

B&W 685 Bookshelf Speaker (Front)
B&W 686 Bookshelf Speaker (Surrounds)
B&W HTM61 Center Speaker
B&W ASW610 Subwoofer
ONKYO TX-NR807 7.1 HDMI A/V Network Receiver

I am planning to use my PS3 Slim as BD player and a samsung dvd player.

Does anyone have the same set up? Or can anyone comment please?

Help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

p.s. anyone from Philippines? Where do i get the cheapest set up?

Try this...go into Listening Mode Setup-> CBL/SAT-> and change the Analog/PCM preset from "Last Valid" to something that will keep at least 5 of the amp channels driven....PLIIx should work for 5 or 7 channels.....and see if the clicking stops. The theory on this is that the clicking is associated with bringing up/shutting down the amplifiers in use between stereo and multi-channel....keeping the same number of amps active regardless of input eliminates the clicking for that source.

No. The two subwoofer outs are no different than putting a y-splitter off of a single sub out. I dislike that they call it a "7.2" output as that implies what you suggest, that one would have individual control over each and that is not the case. The way you have things connected now is the best way to do it.

I was gone for a long weekend and just flipped off the breaker that is dedicated to my HT system and after firing things back up again noticed that things seemed a little off. I went into the level calibration section and found that the sub trim had magically gone from -4 to -15 and the left rear went from 0 to -11 and the other trims appeared to be unaltered. I was scared about what else might have changed so I did a reset and reran audyssey. I run an 805 but I wanted to mention that I have seen changes from disconnecting the power.

Well, no Fry's in Dallas have a 180 that isn't an "open return" or a "demo"... So after much standing digging thru the interweb on my iphone, I nabbed a 608 at the same price ($499), although it isn't a price point I feel as good for for the 608 as I did for the 180...

I haven't opened it, but now trying to figure out what I traded out. I realize multi zone and an ethernet connection for internet radio - neither of which I really care about..

What I care about is the processing and, I think, the 608 is the 180's equal... but still educating myself about that.

Any other suggestions for comparable options at a similar pricepoint? I don't mind spending some extra money... the Marantz 5004?

If you can, add the width speakers. Having added the rear 7.1 speakers and then experimenting with the wide speakers, wide add so much to the imaging it's surprising. I don't even miss the rear speakers, but if I get a Blu ray with true 7.1 they are still an option. But the true power of this receiver shines with the added width speakers.

My bluray has 7.1 decoding and I use the wide speaker set up mounted up wide and high. The sound is great, thunder, jets, cars and horses, you name it, it all cruises across my wall back and forth as if it were in the same room with me, pretty dazzling!

Can't wait to do wides I'm moving out of my place soon so I don't want to get into mounting more speakers up top yet. Definitely looking forward to it!

I am thinking about getting this receiver.

My current Pioneer Elite receiver will not allow me to bitstream DTS-HD MA & add Dolby PLIIx. I have a 7.1 setup. I'd like to use my 7.1 speakers when bitstreaming DTS-HD MA.

Will this receiver allow you to bitstream DTS-HD MA & use Dolby PLIIX without using any THX mode?

Also if it does can you use adjust tone (bass & treble) while in that mode?

Yes to both questions...I just checked out the DTS-HD MA capability for another post and it worked fine in PLIIx listening mode with 7.1 channels active.

On the tone control, it only adjusts bass and treble of the front speakers but does so in any listening mode except Direct, Pure Audio or THX. The sub and center can also be adjusted on the fly in the modes where the tone control works. EDIT The sub and center are also adjustable on the fly in THX mode too.
