B&W HTM61 Center Speaker
B&W DS3 Dipole Speakers (Surrounds)
B&W ASW610 Subwoofer

I am planning to use my PS3 Slim as BD player and a samsung dvd player. I will be using a Mitsubishi HC3800 PJ in a 100" PJ screen. My room dimensions are 12' X 18' by 8' ceiling height.

Does anyone have the same set up? I hope someone can recommend a better set up with my speakers, I am really new in HT and I am confused between wides, heights or putting the extra pair of speakers at the back.

Help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Use the wides forget the rear surround and place the dipoles on the sides. Which length is your width? If the speakers timbre match you should be fine, if you can place the speakers properly.

Thought I'd post this for folks that have been struggling with the no sound issue as I have.

PER: Latest Firmware As of 15 June 2010
Stabilizes operation immediately after power is turned on (thereby avoiding problems of no sound output after the A/V receiver has been in Standby mode for an extended time with network control enabled).

(about time!)

2nd or 3rd the option to loose the rears and go with wides. MUCH better sound imaging.

Agree w/ above poster. I have a somewhat similar config:
2x601 (wide)
3xLCR (compact/shielded flavor of the 603)
2xDS3
1xASW500

Played w/ high vs. wide vs. surround and wide was the sure winner especially when in came to music.

For you guys who like wides, especially for music, what's your opinion of "All Channel Stereo" mode? I'm using it with Pandora and other 2 channel music and really like the "immersive" effect....a much different sound than "all channel stereo" gave before the wides set-up. Also using bi-pole surrounds now and they help with the effect.

That's what mode I always used for music on my older Onkyo and I'm still using it with the new one at least for now. I also have Dipole/Bipole surrounds.

I just ran firmware update without problem, new level is 1271-3102-0010-9120. I've never had NET connection issues though so guess I won't appreciate the fix.

My room is slightly wider and longer, also opens onto another area behind...so a little harder to fill. SVS speakers in 7.1 wide and it is great! Given the speakers you've ordered (but I've not heard them), I think you will be really pleased once you have everything set-up and calibrated

Mine is similar-14.5W, 21L and 8H-and like I said previously; DSX WIDE sounds very good.

BTW- the Mitsu 3800 is a very nice pj. Awesome colors especially deep, true reds. You will love your new setup.

my room is 3m by 3m with a couple of half tube corner bass trap on the front wall, a couple of abffusor/diffusor combination panel thats 2 ft wide by 4 ft wide by 4 inches thick one on each side walls, a diffusor at the back wall thats about 2m by 1m, im using the following:

Onkyo HT RC180
Monitor Audio RS 1 - front
Monitor Audio RSLCR - center
Monitor Audio B2 - front wide
Wharfedale 9dfs - surround
SVS PB10NSD - subwoofer

mine is 7.2 thats why i will be getting another SVS in the coming months but have maintained the set up with front wide only having to get the best sound experience with this, I tried doing the surround back but less of an effect. im sharing the same experience wiht the rest of the guys using the wide DSX.

Agreed.. Coincidentally the quality of Onkyo's 5-Ch Stereo was the primary reason I purchased my DS777 ~10 years ago and a major factor in why I stayed w/ Onkyo in my [somewhat reluctant] move to 7.1+HDMI.

I run 5.1

For Xbox 360, I use "THX Game"
For Movies streaming from PC, I use "THX Movie"
For music streaming from my PC (and really any source, tuner, pandora, whatever), I use "All Channel Stereo"
For TV programming, I use "TV Logic" usually

I guess I don't know which I am "supposed" to be using.

I would think that "Direct" would always be the best, but I definitely prefer the All Channel Stereo music because it gets louder and immersive for music. Should I go with direct on other sources, or keep using what I'm using. What about other suggestions for listening modes?

You're supposed to use the mode that sounds best!
I think what you're using is fine but several suggestions to try:
1) if you use Xbox for movies, other modes might sound better than THX Game;
2) for TV programming, if you're getting the feed through a cable box, much of it is DD, so a THX or Dolby mode will usually perform better. A lot of really good DD mixing showing up in some unusual places...Cold Case and The Mentalist come to mind;
3) If you listen to multi-channel music through any of your devices (Xbox, cable, etc) then the specific encoding will usually sound best. For example, I've noticed that All Channel Stereo looses some content (like a horn or cymbal) when playing DTS 5.1 but it does fine in DTS or THX Music mode.

I have an 807 hooked up as a pre/pro along with my Adcom amp(via zone 2 trigger). Im having problems running Audyssey. Whenever I stick the mic plug into the receiver it shuts off zone 2 which shuts off my amp. Any idea on how to remedy this?

Sounds like Audyssey wants to eliminate zone 2 from calibration. Can you temporarilly unplug the trigger line and manually power on the Adcom just for the Audyssey run.....then plug the trigger back in afterwards?

Yeah, thats what I had to do to make it work.

Yep...Audyssey likes everything quiet. I guess having a zone 2 amp come alive down the hall during calibration would irritate me too.

Nicely said!

For viewing, my 807 is used solely for blu-ray/DVD's. I do listen to my FM tuner as well.

I like my set up pretty well, when a choice is given (per video disc), I'll select the highest audio resolution available, then the 807 delivers the interpretation. Example would be hitting the display button and seeing; Input: HDMI 1 DTS 5.1ch/ Output: Audyssey DSX DTS 7.1ch or, Input: HDMI 1 DTS Master Audio 7.1ch/ Output: Audyssey DSX Master Audio 7.1ch.

My FM tuner always defaults to All channel stereo, I've tried other settings but I like the A.C.S.

Heck yeah, what ever sounds best.

Hello to all,

Can somebody please help me on this? I have connected my BLUE RAY PLAYER and an external digital HD decoder with HDMI to the first two HDMI connections, and an analogue tuner to the composite connections at CABLE/SAT with SCART to RCA cables. On the MONITOR SET UP I have marked HDMI, and on RESOLUTION 1080p, which is the output of my BENQ1000 projector.

The Blue ray and the HD decoder works fine, but i am having a problem with the analogue tuner.When i press the CABLE/SAT on the remote I cannot see or hear anything. I must be doing something wrong, but i cannot find it.

Please help me on this, cause it drives me crazy.
Best regards

Theo

Hi guys

This is my first ever post on any forum (yes I know you will call me a newbie - but we have to start somewhere). I couldnt work out how to post a new thread, so I jumped on this one. Sorry.
Just a question on my Onkyo TX-NR807. I have been using the network capabilities to play music from my laptop. Does anyone know how to just play a music folder that I have created on the laptop. I dont want the whole list of songs that I have, just a folder with selected songs.

Thanks

Bomberben

Theo,
If you're using an SCART or Euro connector, I guess you have a European model...yes? Did you continue down the Input/Output Assign menu and assign that connector to Cable/Sat? If not, then that is the problem for the analogue tuner video...and I think the connector also carries audio too.
post #3085 of 5390
Huh... After taking my receiver in to get it fixed twice for this very issue was told that Onkyo was unaware of ANY issue with regards to "No Sound" Hopefully this actually does fix the problem.
post #3086 of 5390
relatively new owner.

in general really like my unit, but i want better control of my system. are there discrete codes to switch the receiver straight to vtuner or straight to the server page of DLNA or straight to Pandora?

i've got a universal remote control (URC-R50) and I've got a button labeled Pandora but really that just goes to the vtuner/pandora/rhapsody/sirius list

and if i hit the pandora button again, it goes to the dlna stuff.

i use all this stuff and would like to press 1 button and get right to what i want rather than navigate the relatively clumsy net menu system.

Theo,
My apologies for bad info in my previous post...I completely misread your post.

Just to clarify, after carefully reading, I think you're using a SCART adapter with composite RCA out...Yellow video and white/red analog audio...and have connected this to the CBL/SAT "IN" terminals that are between "Game" and "VCR/DVR" , right? and not connected to Component CBL/SAT. Also, is the SCART adapter plugged into "TV SCART" instead of VCR SCART or some other choice?

If SCART is connected correctly, and HDMI Monitor Out is set to HDMI, selecting CBL/SAT should produce upconverted video IF:
1) HDMI Input for CBL/SAT is set to "-----" and;
2) Component Video Input for CBL/SAT is set to "-----" and;
3) your analogue tuner is internally set to output video signal through the TV SCART connector.

Also, you will get audio via the analog connection if:
1) Digital Audio Input for CBL/SAT is set to "-----" and;
2) your analogue tuner is set internally to output audio as "analogue" or something other than Dolby or "digital.

Hope this is more helpful than my first post.

I apologize if this is in the wrong thread, new here & don't know how to post properly.

I just purchased the onkyo 807, my concerns are:

1.) why do I have to crank the volume up about half way (40+) to hear the AVR? My older, smaller, cheaper AVR could be heard at volume 10+. I did the Audessy setup.

2.) The commercials still come on loud, I know that this AVR is supposed to prevent that, did I miss a setup step?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're using Dynamic volume it will be lower. Go into "audio adjust--Audyssey--Dynamic volume, and check to see if it's set to 'Off'. Any other setting will result in lower volume in incremental degrees.
post #3090 of 5390
Thank you. I will check that. So far I am not pleased with the AVR, I am sure that is to my lack of knowledge with the new AVR. My movies don't seem to come "alive" as with my old AVR.
