The service center told me it was a refurbished 808 over the phone this morning when they received the shipment as that's what Onkyo had stated they had shipped as a replacement however it would appear they're out of functional refurbed 808s now too.. Anyone else receive a new 809 yet?

...Got my new "replacement" 809 today, nearly same story as yours!

I am astounded that this continues...I am almost ready to sell mine, that is functioning, (other than the Network issue that has NEVER worked...), in lieu of it dying, then having to deal with Onkyo for an out of warranty pile of sh!t. These b*stards owe their community something...or they should be out of business.
I know my money will talk elsewhere, next time.

Eek, I meant 807. Fixed the post

I left a message with onkyo after being on hold for half an hour. I don't expect them to return my call-- they didn't even bother last time when I was in warranty

No word from onkyo, but I did manage to bring it back to life. I am not sure which step(s) actually DID it, but I did several combinations of the following:
  • Hard power reset (unplug/replug)
  • Power Bleed (Unplug, hold down power)
  • Reset in Manual (Turn on, hold vcr/dvr + power)
  • Another reset I found (TV/Tape + Power)

I did these things several times- finally, after one of the power+TV/Tape attempts, lo-and-behold, the little speaker icons showed back up.

I will still probably switch it out for something else, but now it isn't as urgent.

JRS - I doubt that is going to last long. but I hope it does...

fyi to all that are out of warranty - the charge listed for my warrantied repair listed as "Soldered (Give Ref#), Reflowed Q3401" was $60. I am sure that is a discounted rate. Maybe Q3401 is the IC number on the PCB.

You are right. It didn't last long.

I was shocked, though, when I got call from Onkyo today. They are sending me a shipping label, and extended the warranty for me to send it to USR again.

Does anyone know what the percentage is of failed 807s? Is there a way that Onkyo would replace a unit that works fine?
The only entity who could realistically know what the percentage is of failed 807's would be Onkyo. They are the only ones who would know how many 807's were manufactured and distributed/sold. Moreover, Onkyo would also be the most likely recipient of information relating to customer complaints, unit failures, warranty claims, repairs, etc.

That said, Onkyo (or any other manufacturer for that matter), will not typically publish or otherwise publicly share such information for obvious reasons ... particularly during the active life cycle and retailing of a given model.
As well as the fact, that you will have a hard enough time getting them to handle a legitimate warranty claim while it is actually within warranty...
I would also find it hard to believe that they would release any failure info, while they spend most of their time denying that there are any issues at all with their product.

The idea of a poll (x7 line and the same for x8 line) has crossed my mind but I think it might be tough to get fair data...

(do you own an x7? Has it ever failed? Do it fail under warranty? Was it repaired under warranty? What was the repair? Was it successful? Etc etc)

I have an 807 and a 3007, both bought from Best Buy about a year ago, and both work fine...except for a HDMI switching glitch with the 3007. Neither has been out for repair. Following this thread, Should I assume that there is a problem with all of the 807s and will it be just a matter of time before there are problems? Has anybody here owned an 807 for a number of years without repair?

I think this is a very good question. An additional dimension to your question would be someone who has used an 807 a lot over an extended period of time without problems.

I haven't visited this thread in a long time and it is too bad how many problems these units seem to be having.

I have had mine about 18 months (bought refurb from Accessories4less) and use it daily for my main HT/Television/Music room. Networking has always worked flawlessly, no "clicking" and no other problems. I have had to hit standby and turn it back on to get sound, but probably only 4-5 times total.

Now I am nervous it is due to break down any day now...

Dream on with that thought.... There is no way they are going to just start replacing units that work fine.
I also use my 807 daily for several hours both watching TV and streaming Pandora, it is about 16 months old so far without issues.

It would be interesting to hear from people who purchased their units when it was first released, I purchased my 807 about the same time the 808 was released so there should be people out there with 807 units that are 2.5 +/- years old.

Are you using the HDMI inputs for TV?

Everything that I have connected, except for a sonos box (toslink) is HDMI. I did have my appletv hooked up component+toslink for a while, trying to isolate a DolbyDigital problem, but that always had the same problems.

I bought my 807 early september, 2009. I started having trouble with sound stopping within six months, but I attributed it to HDMI quirks. It didn't happen often, so I just power-cycled and moved on. When it got to the point where it was a couple of times a week, I started looking in to the issue, and found this thread. Sent out for service june, 2011, and it got "re-soldered". Within a couple of days it started clicking, and this week finally lost sound all together. Now out of warranty, but onkyo says that they are sending me a shipping label for a free repair.

So- I bought mine probably late-product cycle (but the 808 hadn't come out yet, to my knowledge), and the problems surfaced early on.

All in all it took over 2 months to get this issue resolved and I'm real happy with the outcome! My biggest complaint with service center & Onkyo was lack of communication. Good Luck everyone and may your defective 807 be replaced with a new 809!

That would be very nice, indeed.

Yes I 5 devices plugged into HDMI and one old SD device plugged in by component. Only output is HDMI.

I too haven't been to these pages in a while. Just stopped in to see if there was any news of firmware updates and am surprised and concerned to see so many having issues.

I have had my 807 for 19 months and it has worked flawlessly the whole time. It is used at least an hour a day probably an average of 4 hours a day mainly on the HDMI input from the cable DVR.

Keeping my fingers crossed....

The guy said he would take care of it and would call me with an update in a couple days. He called me to come to the store and pick a new AVR of equal value, I grabbed a PIO elite 52 and paid the 150.00 difference. Not bad.

Hey Modicen how do you like your Pioneer? How does it compare with the Onkyo line? If mine breaks again I will be really considering changing lines. Onkyo just is not what it was back in the 90's.

i got my home theater setup completed. i have my comcast dvr connected to the onkyo nr807 and i was watching a ondemand movie this weekend. i notice the NR807 keeps making a popping noise, almost like its channel modes. does anyone NR807 do that?

My guess will be OVER 100%, since my box went to repair twice and so did for other people. As for your second question I wish I would know how to get this monkey of my back.

Uh-oh... Just popped back in to this thread after a long time being gone since I'm having troubles with both my network connection and my speaker icons not showing up and not getting sound and this was the first post I read. Not a good sign.

Searching thread now...

Oh geez. I see this is a standard problem. Argh. Well I have an extended warranty so I should be set. I don't usually buy extended warranties but I got a great price on the unit and since I purchased on 9/14/2009 and just got back in town after working on location since end of August, I'd say it was $80 well spent! I hope they just buy out the item which will give me my purchase price back and that was only $699 which is just a bit more than the HDMI card from what I've read here.

Looking into the 1007 unit now... and Denons as well. Any suggestions?

(I posted this in the Outlaw Owner's thread, but now I think it is my Onkyo)
I got my 180 back last Monday and everything seems to be working fine.

Just before I sent it out for repair, I had been messing with some of the settings on the rear panel of my Outlaw LFM1. So yesterday I decided to check where I had left my settings. I decided to turn it from Bypass to Active. I noticed a distinct change in the amount of detail no matter of the knob was at 60 or all the way up to 120hz. Bypass that makes much more 'noise' than Active. With Bypass on, I can tell I am looking at the back of my sub, with it off, I wouldn't know it was right there (directional).

I called Onkyo today and described what was going on. They suggested that I do a VCR/Standby reset. I just did. All the speakers and sub were detected and set to 80hz. However, if I bypass my subs built in crossover, I am hearing lots of localizable sounds. I am going to call Onkyo back in the morning and see what they say to do next.

In the mean time, do you guys have any ideas on what is causing this?
Thanks,
John

Good Luck! Me and another guy recently got new 809's as replacements when they couldn't get the HDMI cards in for repair. Both of our 807's sat in repair shop for about 2 months tho, I wonder if that has something to do with it?

Thanks! How do you like the 809? I'll have to look that one up and see the specs.

I really didn't want to have to research all this again for a long time! Oh well...

...Really loving it so far! It has support for 3D which I wanted for future use and doesn't run half as hot as my 807 did. The net stations work really well except for napster which has a hard time keeping itself connected to net.

The 807 & 809 have real close feature sets with the 809 slightly more advanced in video processing area. Real sorry to hear about your receiver acting up.

I went 2 months without my be-loved 807 so I know how you feel.

I called Onkyo and reported that resetting it didn't work. They told me to test with 2.1, 3.1 and then 5.1.
I want this working but I also don't want to be without my receiver for another few weeks. Is there a way I can measure the output without a meter? Maybe RCA to 3.5mm and record it on my laptop?
