I've got a 5 channel amp powering my Right, Left, and Center and the Rear Surrounds via the pre-amp output. I use the Onkyo to power the Rear Back Surrounds (or you could power the Front Wide or High but not more than 1 of these at a time). I'm using an Outlaw 755 for the other channels and the difference is noticeable between receiver power and 5 channel amp power.

I had an Outlaw 970, then tried the Emo UMC-1 (way too buggy), before settling on the Onkyo as my pre-amp. For the price including the networking feature, I couldn't find anything close to it out there with the same feature set.

PS - For anyone interested, I just picked up a AV RECEIVER/AMP/DVR cooling fan w/thermoswitch module off Ebay for my receiver after I got it back from ABL (HDMI board replacement). I have to say it does a great job of cooling off the receiver when it gets hot. I'm sure you could probably make one yourself for less than $50, but if you have no soldering ability like myself, its a pretty good deal and gives me some piece of mind that the receiver isn't cooking to an early death (again).

Well,I just got a call from Electra sound here in Ohio to pick up my unit(which was shipped to abl for repair????).
They did the resolder on the HDMI board which I know won't last.
I thought new HDMI boards had come in????
I'm very discouraged by the quality of this unit.
I have a 20 year old fisher receiver that still works, and never had issue one.
So,I will re-install the onkyo(in its very cramped locale,PIA)have it fail and then what???
Maybe that 'very' cramped space is contributing to an overheating condition which can be the cause of the pre-mature failure?

Your choice but Onkyo AVR's run warm, OK, hot... You must ensure suffcient airflow by following the recommended clearances or active cooling.
I have a hard time with the "run hot" theory...
I understand they run hot....I understand the necessity of cooling. I can get behind the company that says "Make sure you have adequate air space"... Their product has been running hot for years... The 805's ran hot...THEY did not fail at the rate that this unit fails. Someone should be looking in to this for class action IMHO....

Read my earlier posts, its hard to get at because of locale but its got plenty of air space in a cool environment.
Unit never gets more than mildly warm to the touch.
Bad batch of boards is the main culprit.

Quick question - is there a way via the remote to enable and disable video processing? I much, much prefer it off- use VCR& Return to switch it off- but my Roku really needs it's brightness level cut to -21 to look good. Be nice to program my harmony remote to switch it on and off but have not found a way.

Hi all, new to the forum here. Have an 807 that has been in for repairs for the third time in 5 weeks for no sound (video still passed through). First time Best Buy sent it off and they re-soldered something and the unit was dead and would go into auto-protect mode. Then, ABL soldered some things and it was dead on arrival when i got it back (second time), off it goes again for a 3rd time. I called Onkyo parts dept and spoke to a rep who emailed ABL about my issue, i clearly explained to him it has been in twice and was not fixed either time and i wanted a replacement. He was nice and said he would look into but ABL needed to look at it one more time. Contacted ABL today and they said Onkyo informed them they would send me a replacement once (crossing fingers) ABL gets my brick. Hoping this isn't this an bad HDMI board and they simply fix it vs sending me a new unit. BTW, the rep did mention re-soldering never works. Does this sound like the dreaded bad HDMI board issue?

If you bought it at Best Buy, shouldn't it qualifiy for their lemon replacement coverage with 3 repairs?

I talked with the store manager, their policy is it has to be sent back at least 3 times for repair. He said if it comes back dead this time he will give me my money back vs waiting for Onkyo to tell the to give me a replacement and sending out for a 4th time.

I would choose this option...You're better off spending your hard-earned dollars elsewhere.

Hi
I am looking for code to program the onkyo remote (RC 745m) to operate the U-Verse main (recording) box.

My original remote is half dead, I have just ordered new rc 745m and once in, I would like to program it.

if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, has anyone been successful with full manual programming( learning mode) of remote keys?
Can the up down left right buttons be programmed and also "all others", if no code exist (or can't be found)?

With old TWC cable box I was able to program the red yellow blue and green buttons into onkyo remote, but I started with already recognized code.

with u-verse I have nothing,

thank you

EDIT: Just tried to reprogram with build in list, using buttons on the main unit, selected the AT&T, and programmed back the crippled remote I have.
It does work as far as I can say with keys which do function. so I am really expecting the new remote will be a success.

Usually, a failing remote means that the contacts a getting gummy with oils and dirt. You can always try to pull the remote apart and clean the button sheet with warm water and a mild dish soap. Then clean the gold contacts on the board with a swap and alcohol. Re-assemble and you will find that the remote works much better. I have to do that to my remotes often as I have very oily and acidy hands.

...Saw a tip years ago about preserving remote controls, keep them in ziplock bags. I've been doing this for years and never had a remote require any maintenance besides changing batteries!

Had a question about this unit , mine on certain selections has " DOCK " displaying on the unit if I am in tv/vcr mode and cable/sat , kind of annoying how do I get that to go away ? Thanks

That's a bit tacky, is your furniture wrapped in plastic too?

Got mine back, at least in time for the Super Bowl! They replaced the HDMI board as well on my unit, and it seems to be working well now (knock on wood).

Well, add me to the list of those experiencing the no audio problem. Mine crapped out today. It was working fine last night and when I turned it on today no audio. It had done this once before but I was able to get audio back after unplugging the power and all HDMI cables but this time nothing works. I also seem to have lost the network connection. Oh well, guess I'll be calling them tomorrow. My unit is about a month and a half shy of two years old. Very

Wow, the sheer number of failed HDMI boards is amazing.. I would really try to press Onkyo to provide some additional warranty time on your upcoming HDMI board repair. I know, I know, probably a silly request. but if they truly have solved the problem with these boards they should have no problem doing that.... and press them to authorize whatever repair center you end up using to actually replace the board and not just re-solder it. Be diligent with your contact at the repair center... they are supposed to be working for you. Good luck!

Has anyone thought about adding one of those usb cooling fans made for Laptops to cool the AVR? I thought about getting one to see if it helps. Thoughts?
I took my receiver to the service center Onkyo recommended. The lady there told me it would be about two weeks and also said mine was the 21st they had seen brought in with the same problem.

I spliced a couple of pc fans to a USB cable. My directv box has an always on USB port which is producing the power. I picked fans which draw little power. You just use the red and black wires. I can't send a link now but you can google it for more details...
I've been running this for a few weeks. I do think it helps a little. It could make the difference to keep it alive. The fans are audible in a silent room but my receiver is in another room from my tv.

Got my 807 back and hooked up couple of weeks ago, after over a month at the service place. They replaced the HDMI board. I had high hopes.

It started dropping out again today about an hour after I put the box back in the attic.

beware of "the cooler guys" I know that if the item is defective they are really hard to get a replacement ....
their thermostats are not very dependable at all , the probe is very fragile as well
post #4949 of 5391
I have had a very different experience with the coolerguys...no problems, excellent kit, went together easily...been working in my cabinet for two years now....

hi onkyo brothers ,i also joined the no sound annoying problem.been a long time reader and my onkyo ran 2 years and 45 days ,then the no sound started it would happen when i switch from cab/sat to cd , dvd input .most times i manage to turn on and off the receiver and it ll work .some other times the speakers icons would disappear and i would have to unplug the unit for a while .it is really bugging me now and thought to share this with you guys .i am currently going through amex insurance claim due to my warranty running out from onkyo and i'll cross my finger that i would get either the unit fixed or replaced with the 809 .have been reading the 809 forum to see the reliabilty of the new 09 units ,i really love the sound over pioneer and denon and beleive me i owned most of the brands and i came from a yamaha rxv 2400 .thought bout the pio elite vsx 52 ,but it is double the price .so fyi if you bought the 807 on a credit card ,you probably have an extra year on top of the 2 years from onkyo.will see how all this turns out and will keep posting my progress ,hopefuly i won't suffer too long without my receiver .
cheers
