FYI American Express covered my 807 with bad HDMI board after Onkyo warranty had expired.

hey arncapo, was wondering if your unit is running good now ? did you have all the symptoms that i had? the sound drop , surround fields weren't working properly .....so on did all the symptoms go away and is it behaving good now?
Well, I've had my unit back for 4 days after getting the HDMI board replaced, and it did get some good use on the first day, while not so much the last 3 (as I've been busy with other things), but today, it produced the dreaded "no sound, no icons" symptom again! This is not what I had hoped for. I did turn it off for 2 minutes, and then on again, and the sound did come back along with the icons, but this is not a good sign that it's still happening, just like with jrs'.

I am really sorry to read about your problem, you should contact U_ radio as they will honor warranty of the repair. they did that for me and paid the second shipping to them.
hope you can get fix or replacement for a new box.
807 was good when it lasted, too bad it was very short lived in so many cases.

Well, I've had to power down / up my receiver a few times tonight to get the audio back. The weird thing is that every time I turn it back on, it seems louder than before I turned it off! Right now, the volume is a good 16 half points (i.e., -24 dB versus -16 dB) lower than normal to produce the same loudness! Strange.

I lost the standard functions when losing the HDMI board, no audio, no network, no icons, no etc.

Currently the plan is to buy a new unit first (809) and not fix the unit until I can find a HDMI board.

I am now waiting for a shipping label from UR. I talked to Bob @ Onkyo, and we are going to give it another shot.

Received my 807 on 1/22/12.
Board was resoldered.
Still running allright after about 10 hrs. usage.
Hoping it doesn't take a dump before the superbowl.
Watched a movie today that had the house shaking, wife was out shopping.

Can the HDMI board be replaced without the need for specialized equipment to set the board to certain specifications? Any other gotchas?
Someone here, a couple pages back, ordered and replaced on their own...

...I have seen the HDMI boards on ebay for around $65.00. Someone did order one and replaced on his own.
Don't think it was to difficult.
Now if it's still working is another story!

hey guys, took my 807 to a service centre today for an estimate to find out about my issues also amex needs that estimate to determine whether fix or replace keeping fingers crossed ,told the tech service man that of course now that it had been unplugged it will act just fine .hope he sees the problems .mind you he saw it before, the other thing is they had 3 tx 809 units that had the no sound and a bad usb for a warranty ,uhoh i hope that these issues aren't carried over for the 809...... them pioneers are looking a little better just about now .

So I turned on the receiver for the first time since the other night (I didn't use it yesterday), and it's louder again, so I've had to turn down the volume again! What could be causing this? I've never heard of anything like this.

I got a refurbished HDMI board for my 807 @ $80 .. thou the 807 is working fine ,it's past the warranty period on the 807, So I thought I'd get the board just as a insurance policy. as time goes on it's gonna be harder to get a board .

Yeah that's a good idea...I replaced my board and now would like to send my original board off to get fixed so I have a spare. Jus not sure where to send it and how much It's gonna cost here in Cleveland.

Fastslappy,
Is the guy aware of the problem? Can/is he making them better? Or just re-doing Onkyo's botched board?

To give an update, my 807 was sent in for a third time for the no sound issue and Best Buy "junked it out" and gave me in store credit as they were out of stock on the 809s until the end of the month. This process took a little over a month and a half. I decided to get a Pioneer Elite VSX-53 and so far i think it sounds a bit better than my 807 and runs MUCH cooler, and the apple airplay is a cool feature. I would advise you to call Onkyo's parts dept if you have the no sound issue and have sent it in multiple times. They actually authorized ABL to exchange my receiver when they were to get it, however in my case Best Buy thankfully jumped the gun and took care of it. Good luck to those of you with this issue and I hope you can get a replacement vs. a fix that may not hold up.

Im using my 807 in my garage just for audio but would be nice to have a hdmi board if possible

Update......Had the board re-soldered,back to back 12 hour days with movies ,music and cable T.V.,no issues yet
I have a total of about 40 to 50 hours usage with no issues.
badgerfan, glad to hear you were taken care of.
Took my "no sound" 807 back to Best Buy yesterday under warranty. Maybe they will give me a store credit for another receiver.
I would "gently" nudge them down that road....Tell them you have heard the repair does not last, and the HDMI board replacement is possibly backordered for weeks. Not to mention the fact that, it remains to be seen, if the board is updated. Or will there be a rash of dead boards in another two years?

I'm having problems removing 2 ribbon cables (1 grey and 1 black) from the Onkyo TX-NR807 HDMI board.

Has anyone done this or know the recommended method for detaching these 2 cables?

Never Mind - I was able to detach them.
I took a really small flat head like little larger than eye glass size to loosen the ribbons plastic snap and then just worked it out with slow steady pressure. They can be very tight just take ur time and it will come out!

That's what I ended up doing. Used a very small screw driver too. Doesn't look like they intended them to be removed. Thanks for the reply.

Repairing Onkyo TX-NR807 HDMI board

Can anyone recommend a board repair company for the Onkyo TX-NR807 HDMI board?

The Onkyo authorized repair center diagnosed it to be bad, but didn't indicate a specifically what failed. Is there a failure mode common to many of the HDMI board failures?

My bad for the late reply, didn't see your question.

I was able to get American Express to cover the repair cost up to the purchase price of the unit. Mine was out of warranty too.

I'm sticking with Onkyo. Will be picking up an 809 and hope to repair the 807. From internet research the manufactures all see to be about the same regarding reliability. Yamaha was mentioned as another reliable manufacture.
