I was visiting a friend last weekend and boy was i impressed with the details of his system. He was telling me that it was due to older receivers having not much dynamics vs. the newer once. Though the amp section (raw power) of his older Onkyo 805 was better than the 809 (albeit minimal), the dynamics was the key factor. He was using SAME the power amp (plinius) and the only difference was he is using htpc now vs. NMT before.
Any thoughts on this?.
Unless you were using the same speakers, in the same room, at the same time, your comparison is virtually meaningless. Even then, unless the test is blind, the result is suspect at best. Take away the 809's improved room correction, and it is virtually identical to the 807. With hybrid standby and XT32, there are more reasons to upgrade to the 818
Well, I AM using the same room, the same speakers, albeit not the same time, but I know the 807 hand over fist...and I can tell you, after 2 days of listening...(before and after audyssey) The 818 is a markedly better receiver. Both in terms of sound quality, and ease of use.
I am still getting used to a few things, but my fears have been eased a bit. If this unit holds up, I can see myself using it for a long while. without the need for an upgrade. (As it SHOULD be, for what we paid for our 807's!)
Switching is better. the 807 had to have a monoprice HDMI swtich/booster, in the mix to get a signal to my PLANAR projector. Now, I am running direct from the 818 to the display. (I do get some handshake snowy screens before it locks, but it locks on it's own.)
It is a bit brighter with my Paradigm Focus', but it does seem to bring better "life" out of them.
Previewed a bit of Star Trek (2009) (A movie I know) and I can say that there are things in the playback, that I never noticed.
There is better separation in the height channel. Before it was more of a "fill", now It is an enhancement.
Right now, I am listening to "Eagles: Hell Freezes Over" via the DLNA app on the NET feature, . (Which is amazingly better....One screen, where you pick your NET choice...Spotify, Pandora, LastFM etc...instead of the scrolling menu the 807 has..."Return...Return...Return" anyone?) Lack of continuous playback on live music is definitely noticeable...and more than a little annoying.
I haven't noticed much difference in the Music Optimizer, for streaming MP3 audio...(radio stations for me, my rips are lossless). To me, the optimizer was noticeble on my 807.
I have a few things I am working through.
1. My CD/DVD player (Component/Optical), shows up as 4:3, even though I have it set to 16:9...and when I select "progressive scan" I get a double image with a squiggly line separating them.
2. My Server, with a Sapphire HD 5450 installed, does not display. If I dial in via TightVNC, I show the 818 in the AMD console, but I am getting no signal to my projector.
Hopefully they are setup issues, and not a signal that I have another problem child.
Again, thanks to all that helped with my decision...I bid farewell to this thread (happily)...I have a TON of reading over at the 818 thread.Edited by kevin g. - 4/11/13 at 3:54pm
