Someone correct me if I'm wrong (or they think I'm wrong), but I would think the only issue would be if you happened to "brick" your receiver during the firmware update process. I can't imagine that Pioneer would have any reason to, or any means to, go back and check to find out what firmware your receiver shipped with and whether it had been updated with any firmware if you took it in for warranty service for some other issue.
So yes, if you bricked your receiver doing the update, I would think you'd be SOL, they might not even talk to you. But if you updated the firmware and 3 months from now had some random problem and took it in for service, I don't see Pioneer saying, "Yeah, we researched your firmware and it's been changed by someone and we've voided your warranty."
