As we know it recently samsung made uneasy decision to provide 46" and 56"led tv panels to struggling japanese tv firm sony.
but, sony still needed edge type led chips to light up tvs. right? as of today only two companies in the world mass produced advanced and reliable leds for edge type led tvs, which are samsung LED ( joint venture between samsung electronics & samsung electron) & LG innotec ( LG's brother company).
Despite the strategic needs, Samsung has been grappling with souring ties with Sony as it was reportedly told to reject Sony's call to provide advanced white LED chips to the Japanese firm ― a more key and competitive component in costs than red-, green-, and blue- (RGB) chips ― in making LED TVs.
recently Samsung Led and Lumens(samsung led's direct supplier) agrees to provide led chips and packaging to sony's upcoming mass producing ledtvs as early as this october.
now sony led tvs are using not just samsung led panels but, led chips too.
also, LGDisplay agrees to sell led panels to VIZIO and samsung led to provide led chips to VIZIO. all three companies denied report though. while sharp is still struggling to find reliable and advanced led chip source.
it seems world's #1 and #2 tv firm samsung and lg's vertical integration business strategy working great.
let's see how the tv business turns out in the future.
