Is streaming with CX960 out of question? I really want to stream 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' this december.

don't know if I can wait much longer on the CX. $600 is extremely reasonable.

Has anyone been able to use Control 4 with the 7000es using blueray and standard dvds. If you have what equiptment would I need to get. Thanks Greg
post #755 of 3240
Greg, I am using Control4 with the BDP-CX7000. The CX7000 drivers were intergrated with my current Control4 automation program. Now when my wife wants to watch a dvd she selects "Browse" or "Cover Art" on the touchpanel/remote and all titles (the dvd cover art) in my 400 disc sony 777 dvd changer and all blu ray disc in the BDP-CX7000 are displayed on the touchpanel or on the tv screen together. Both changer are connect to a serial port on the Control4 HC300.

When the movie is selected, it starts playback on the appropriate player. I cannot began to tell you how this makes my wife happy! She has been inviting her friends over for movie night with movies being shown on the Sony G90.

The Control4 GUI is pretty slick. To get started all you need is Control4 HC200 OR HC300 with a serial port. The drivers are parts of Control4 software. After installation the changer found all the titles and cover art on the Control4 movie data base site. I have picture if I can figure out how to post them. Let me know if this helps. If you are in the area you are welcome to stop over and see the system.

Hopefully the pictures of the software are attached.

Hi RP1292.......no photos attached and having a Control4 HC300 with the 250 remote I'd love to be able to see some especially on-screen since I do not have the LCD remote.
I'm leaning towards purchasing the 7000ES and glad to see all the artwork/data was found for your discs.
How many blurays do you have, interested to hear how many Gracenote was able to find on your end.
Wish I lived closer, would love to check it out.
I just picked up some Criterion titles that were on sale at B&N (half off + coupon = awesome). There was "NO DATA" according to Gracenote.....

Monsoon Wedding
Pierrot le Fou
Repulsion

These are relatively new releases (BDs not films) btw....

Rear Projection 1292, could you send me a pm of the estimated cost of the control 4 products. Did you install yourself or buy it from a dealer and have them install it. I have the Escient dmd 100 that I use with two 400 Sony 777es changes. I am considering getting the Sony 7000 blueray changer and using their Gracenote but this sounds much better. Will unit from Control 4 will it allow me to do the same thing that Escient does (show cover art and information). Are both blueray and standard dvds shown on the same screen or do you have to switch screens to see cover art for either blueray and then standard dvds? Thanks Greg
post #759 of 3240
Greg check your email. Control4 does not use Gracenote for title search. They have their own data base.

Greg both Standard, Blu Ray dvds and DVDs ripped to my Netgear Ready NAS NV+ appears on the same screen. You can chose to search by Cover Art or Browse. You can connect all your sony changers including BDP-CX7000 to Control4 serial port. The HC300 only has 2 serial ports so i had to buy a network serial adapter (GC 100-12/18 from) Global Cache (www.globalcache.com) because it was cheaper than Control4 HC200. Everything works like a charm. The pictures will show how the dvd cover art is displayed

I have pictures if you send me a email at:

This is very interesting to me as I was holding off on the CX7000 due to it's native interface. The Escient solution does not appeal since it is an discontinued product and the PC based system also does not appeal since I run macs in general.

I also have a CX777ES whihc I currently use the and Escent SE-1 to control and so this would enable me to replace the Escient with the Control4 HC300 and control both DVD and BD Changers.

Anyway that you know of that it can interface with the Mac Mini / NAS running Plex (notice that you use Netgear as the server interface to the control4)

According to their (Control4) website only installers can sell the systems. In my area those people are not usually do not have a storefront and want to sell whole house automation systems. I have sent in for information so we will see what their dealers are like.

Last question (at least for now). I assume that you get updates and drivers through "myControl4" registration. Do you also set up your system through that as a web interface (ala Harmony 1 remote) or does the dealer set it up for you and each time you change a component then you need to get the deealer back in?

Will the CX-960 play HD-DVD movies?

The My.control4.com allows you to access the web navigator, giving you a degree of control over your home remotely. It does not offer any setup of your home ala the Harmony wizard. You need the Composer Home Edition software for that, which is much more powerful. At this time, you need to involve a dealer every time you make an equipment change. Many dealers will do this remotely for you, preventing a costly site visit.

Here's the email to me today, in response to my query about Vision control for the 7000ES:

Nick,

That's correct; the next Vision software update was initially planned for Q4 2009. However, it doesn't look like that's going to happen and we're probably looking at Q1 or Q2 2010. I would expect an announcement around or at CES 2010 in January.

Mikefl52,
Control4 recognize my NetGear Ready NAS+ and it will load the cover art if the file is a dvd file. I am trying to figure out how to get the Control4 software to display the PS3 movies Cover Art. Because the PS3 along with PS3 MediaServer software does such a great job of streaming movies over my network from my apple computer, I would be very pleased if Control4 would display movie Cover Art from my apple computer just like it does with the sony dvp 777 changer and the ccx7000 changer.
My goal is too get Control4 software to display all movie Cover Art regardless of where it is physical located. If this happens, all I would have to do is touch Cover Art on the touch panel or display on tv, select movie and press play.

Good Luck!

I called Control4 this morning to ask for some pre-sales information to determine if it were possible to integrate one of their Controllers to my existing Elan control system to use for my pair of CX7000's. I spoke to a Sherie (Pronounced cher-ee). She kept on referring me to a local dealer even after I explained that I was trying to avoid dealer hype and was looking to the manufacturer for some guidance. After again being told to contact a local dealer, I thanked her and hung up. Control4...BYTE ME!

I've just had this happen to the Rome Blu-ray box set. Looks like it damaged at least 2 of the 5 discs it loaded before I got an invalid disc. Do any of you have a contact at Sony that is knowledgeable? I'm tired of talking to the scripted
people.

Between my in-laws and me we've had four Sony single disc dvd players and recorders that eventually failed to play discs's that continue to play perfectly well on several other players. They gradually deteriorate - at first they just skip a little, then fail to play a few discs entirely, and finally won't play many discs. Since the only common thing to all 4 has been mechanical, I've attributed this to poor mechanical stability and the laser losing focus. Has anyone experienced this problem with the 960 (or any other Sony megachangers)? If so is there a reasonable fix? - Thanks

As I noted in previous postings I have had several discs damaged by the CX7000ES unit. Sony has been very helpful and has replaced my defective unit with a new unit at no cost to me. My contact was Trung Vu. His email address is trung.vu@am.sony.com. He is in technical support and has done a great job in resolving my issue. Sony is on top of dealing with any problems relating to the CX7000ES becuase of its high profile.

I took advantage of the email address for Trung Vu, and posted some Escient based questions to him. Bottom line, it's up to Escient if they're going to support the changer, but they are not a "partner" with Sony in this respect (don't exactly know what that means, but it doesn't sound good).

He was kind enough to share, however, that "I think we are moving to IP control on the CX7000." If so, I have to believe that opens up worlds of opportunities for control.

Thanks,

Nick

I had a similar experience and found your description very funny. As you saw in my post above, I purchased the Cinemar product (MainLobby).

With all the discussions about Sonly taking care of the defective units, I don't recall anything about them assume responsibility for the disks themselves.

Is Sony covering the damaged disks, also?

Yes, Sony simply told me to mail them the damaged disks and they will replace them.

Felix,

Have you tried mixing DVDs and Blurays in the CX-7000? The CX-7000 should know which is which but I'm curious if you can tell the difference in the Control4 GUI?

I'm thinking about getting the new changer to use for both and hooking it up to a Control4 HC300. It would be nice to know which ones are Bluray.

Seriously Mitch? Seriously?

No offense but it doesn't even play SACD and it's a Sony.

BACK On topic:

So for those who are using a simple (is there such a thing) Control 4 system with their CX7000ES. I have a local installer in the OC who swears by it for these changers. (OC = Orange County, CA)

I am tempted to give it a shot if I get the 7000ES at a blowout bargain this year.

Can any one (RearProjection1292) give us a rough estimate on the cost of a Control4 system for just the title/control of this unit in one location? I see the main unit is about $699 retail but does that does not even get you most everything you need harware wise - for example you need either an i-Phone and software or a controller. Looks like the minimum buy in is about $2k+ by my estimate.

For those who have it - is it that much superior to a good programable remote for control of one theater system?
eldithomaso,

I talked to a local dealer today about this exact system. His total was $2700 for the HC 300, CX-7000 and programming. According to him the HC 300 (with included remote) is all that I would need. They would have to program it to work with the rest of my components.

I just recently got a HC300 hooked up with the 250 remote that comes with and cannot be happier.
I just ordered the CX7000 today after Felix helped me and made me feel very comfortable.
If you are reasonably handy you can install the C4 yourself, very basic to do, put the repeaters on each component and order hardware/programming thru AVS......I suggest going with Jason Turk.
Jason sold me my unit, programmed it and just gave me a great deal on the CX7000 today.......cant wait to receive.
Good luck!

PS......the C4 (HC300 & remote) is much much less than $2k+.....no need for iphone unless you want an extra toy and remote comes with HC300
