A quantum shift in the overall quality of film making? Really?
I'm really not understanding all of the JC fanaticism going on here. This was a good movie, not a great one. The plot wasn't good, but not horrible. The CGI was good, but nowhere near ground breaking. The 3D was the real star of the show here. I see people saying how they cared about CGI characters for the first time. That was because of the acting, not the plot, CGI or storytelling, and if you ask me, just like in Titanic, it's kind of a cheap trick to make you care about what happens to characters in a movie because they fall in love during crappy circumstances. The only reason we are caring about the characters or the story is because there is a love component involved and the acting was good enough to let that shine through. Please, someone name me ten other good things about the story, ten things that make the story rise above mediocrity.............
Without the love story, we have nothing worth noting. It's that love story that binds everything else together. Is that bad? Of course not. But it's cliche', done to death, uninspiring, lazy, and just plain bad when you factor in the fact that he's had YEARS to put this story together. YEARS people! Imagine you're making your own movie from scratch, with a back story and everything. You're going to tell me that the crux of your story is a story that's been told a billion times.......and better? I know I wouldn't. Also.....you have written some damn good stories before, so with this all new "ground breaking" story, you're even going to borrow so heavily from your previous stories that it's hard to not see it as plagiarism?
I liked this movie a lot, but if you take away the visuals, we wouldn't even have a thread about it. If it was M. Night Shyamalan at the helm, there'd be nothing but complaints. We only care so much because it is JC, and we really should be urging him to do better instead of making excuses as to why he didn't.
A tired story with impressive visuals does not a great movie make.
