1. ur usb drive have to be fat32 formatted.( limit 4gb/file).
2. once connected, u see on screen, press triangle, and click, display all. you will see and play all compatible files.

No problem here streaming HD movies w/ 5.1 surround from a PC to the PS3 slim model using a good wireless connection. Haven't bothered hard wiring the PS3 yet since the wireless works fine.

If you upgrade to hdmi audio some day, and get into gaming and the best sound possible for it, you will see why there are separate options for video sound settings and gameplay sound settings.

OK, I see where you're coming from and that makes a bit of sense. But why doesn't Sony label the tools so you can find the ones you need? That's rhetorical.

The PS3 and XBR9 are my first introduction to the XMB. My only other Sony product was a HD RPTV which died leading to the whole escapade of trying to navigate XMB in my new toys. The PS3 slim XMB is a tweaker's delight, I can see. You and dogdoctor (and probably lots of other contributors to this thread) are to be commended for sharing your level of understanding to neophites. Thanks and I'm sure I'll be back with more stupid questions.

I'm not a gamer (yet) and doubt I'll ever get to that stage. Too many other distractions. All I really wanted to do was figure out if I could replace my Panny BD35 with the PS3 for BR/DVD play. Now if I could only figure out how to control video playback with the controller .... Oh, yes, upgrading my AVR - maybe next Christmas?

ok, so its not the PS3 that has the problem, really, its fat32 only being able to recognize max 4gb files. what happens when you copy a 16gb file to a fat32 file system? does it not accept it? i cant believe its this much trouble to play a file larger than 4gb. whats this tsMuxeR thingy? Man i think ill just run a 70 foot lan cable....

Yes, Sony does makes it difficult at times. But if you do a little research and ask questions in this great community, things are a little easier.

You will get used to using the controller in no time. But just to let you know, there are many options out there for controlling your PS3 besides the controller. There is the PS3 remote control, which is relatively cheap, and a slew of IR devices which you can integrate with your PS3. It's also a nice multimedia machine which can be used for alot more than just BD watching and gaming. Good luck with it, and try to enjoy some gaming. You just might get hooked on gaming though.

Hey there tingham, I'm gonna be a PS3 Slim owner soon. Will be using it mainly as a blu-ray player and as a media centre, and occasionally as a gaming device. I shall be connecting the Slim via HDMI to my AV Receiver (Pioneer VSX-919AH-K).

I want my HD audio decoding to be done by the AV Receiver, and I also wish to get the best possible sound out of my games. How is the audio in games stored? (I meant to ask, as Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-MA is to blu-ray, what are the hi-def standards on a PS3 game?)

Can you tell me what setting I will need to use to get my AV Receiver to decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-MA and also get the best possible sound out of my games at the same time?

From what I understand, I need to set the Audio Out as "Bitstream". But do I need to make this change in both the Audio and Video Settings on the XMB or just one of them, and if yes, then which one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey zervinb, you are correct if you want your Pioneer to decode the hd movie codecs. Set the PS3 Slim to "Bitstream" in the DVD/Video settings tab in the system settings. But before you do that you will have to setup the sound when you 1st connect the PS3 slim to your AVR.

I'm pretty sure your Pio accepts a full 7.1 pcm signal, so the PS3 should select LPCM and DD/DTS codecs automatically when you set it up. Let the PS3 slim "automatically" detect your avr's optimum settings when you 1st set it up. Make sure you do this. You can always change it later if you wish.

I personally would let it output LPCM for games. As long as you set it for "LPCM" in the sound settings tab it should output that format for games and other content. Your really going to have to play around with these settings according to the formats that the particular video/mp3/game that your are watching, listening, or playing is outputting. It's all a matter of what YOU prefer.

Whats great about the PS3 is that you can change sound output formats on the fly (with certain content) while you are listening or viewing video. In most cases it will work flawlessly, but some AVR's might hiccup for a few seconds during the transition from switching the sound output formats (Bitstream and LPCM).

Most new games are at least 5.1 LPCM, and many are 7.1, including alot of the PSN downloadable games. All I can suggest is to try different formats for the content that you are listening to. Your AVR has alot of capabilities and you will use all of them as you go thru the process of "TWEAKING". Enjoy your new slim when you get it. And if you have any questions or thoughts, you know where to come for the answers...AVS Forum!

Has anyone experienced gaming "lag" while using the PS3/PS3 Slim along with an AV Receiver? Just wanted to know.

Well, I haven't experienced it yet. I've purchased an AV Receiver, the Pioneer VSX-919AH-K recently, and I was thinking of adding a PS3 Slim for blu-ray playback and occasional gaming. Just read in a few places that AV receivers are not good for gaming since they introduce gaming "lag" due to excessive audio processing. Just wanted to know if any users actually experience this and whether its significant enough to affect gameplay.

My choices in gaming will be restricted to mainly racing (Grid, GT5-when released) and a bit of Uncharted 2. So, just wanted to know if the "lag" will affect these type of games.

PS: This will be my 1st experience with Playstation.

I have a Denon AV receiver & wouldnt want to live without surround sound in a game. The guitar hero games seem to have a noticable lag but it may be due to the lcd?

Its never effected the other types of games that i play that i have noticed.

Thanks for replying. I too think my receiver will be fine with games. It'll be fun to race in surround.

It's usually more a function of the TV than the receiver. Additional layers of video processing can introduce lag (edge enhancement, local dimming, etc).
