Western Digital - WD TV Live Media Player (WDTV2) - Page 48

I noticed, after reading for example, the OPPO BDP-83 can only play MKV files from USB drives that are formatted in FAT32 and not NTFS. Basically, FAT32 has a 4GB file size limit.

Is the WDTV2 able to play MKV files from a USB formatted in NTFS so that it can play MKV files greater than 4GB?
Well, not sure if this was asked or not. I searched but didnt see it.

Hopefully the wdtv live will allow HD youtube videos to be played, right now i can only play standard or HQ but there is no choice to watch in HD.

Anyone know if they can watch HD videos on youtube?

Yes it can be ntfs.

Thanks for the info regarding AVI files.

The main reason I bought the box is NOT to convert anything because my PC is slow and converting takes forever.

How do I remux avi to mkv? Will it take a while?
Simply open the AVI in MKVMerge and select a target dir. It will take only as long as copying the file from one folder to another since you just change the container and leave the streams inside untouched.

MkvMergeGUI, part of MkvToolNix. It doesn't re-encode so it only takes a minute. Batch processing available.

Ive had the WDTV Live for a few days now.

I just wanted to combine a few bits of info about it and work arounds I have found for problems I have had regards playback of video and audio (my experience has only been with a WD MyBook attached via US to the player)

PROBLEM 1
MP4s that had been converted and splitted for my xbox 360 will playback, but the movement is choppy.

FIX
Use MKVMerge to open the first split part of your movie (moviename_001.mp4), then click 'Append' and add the second part (moviename.002.mp4).

Then click Start to join and reprocess the file back to a MKV file.

You can batch convert so this isnt a tricky thing to do.

My core2duo 2ghz did each movie in around 5 mins.

PROBLEM 2
WMV files play, but WMA Pro soundtrack will not.
Again another suckerpunch if you are replacing your xbox 360 as you HD movie player.

FIX
Programs you will need:
MediaInfo - http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

WMV Convertor - http://www.sipper.nl/setup.exe (more info here: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/sh....php?tid=11991)

TSMuxeR - http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html

Run MediaInfo program and find out the frame rate of your movie. (Jot it down as you will need this later)

Next we use WMV convertor by Sipper

This will convert your WMV into MKV format. However, this isnt enough as for some reason the WDTV will only play this file for a few seconds.

The next step is to run it through TSMuxeR.

You need to ensure that the frame rate is enforced. There is a dropdown box that allows you to choose the frame rate (23.967 = 24000/1001).

The resulting TS file will now work in WDTV.

PROBLEM 3
The WDTV Live doesnt seem to use the AUTO function for HDMI resoltuon and refresh rate.

Hoping this will be fixed in the new version.

For the time being Ive left it on 23.967fps as most my films are that.

Yes you can watch HD videos on youtube. They look great.
But how can you identify which ones are HD without playing it?
All my movies (DVD + BD) are kept in .iso files
WDTV has no problem reading them but I didn't find the way to display the corresponding dvd art in the movie browser
I thing I've tried all the possibilities:
- all the variations in case : QUANTUMOFSOLACE.jpg QUANTUMOFSOLACE.JPG
- all the variations in nanes: QUANTUMOFSOLACE.jpg QUANTUMOFSOLACE.iso.jpg
- all the variations in extensions: QUANTUMOFSOLACE.jpeg QUANTUMOFSOLACE.jpg

And this for both for local files or network files
Is this a bug? a limitation? or is there some trick to get it?

Also the "folder.jpg" trick does not work for me too as many have already pointed before for both local and network drives

I enabled the media server on WHS and on the WDTV it will show the WHS under "Media Servers" but it still won't show in "Network Shares"

I also enabled the "Guest" account but still no luck.

Is there something really basic or stupid I'm maybe not doing on the WDTV Live? Shouldn't the WHS just pop up under "Network Shares" in Video without me having to do anything?

Well I did 3 things and went to bed. When I got up this morning it was finally working so some combination of these 3 things did the trick...

1) WHS had a static IP. I set it to DHCP and gave it a static lease on my router (by tying MAC address to IP)
2) Ensured the Windows firewall was OFF on WHS
3) Enabled the Guest account on WHS

I'm not sure if there is a time factor here for a new WHS and WDTV Live to get synched or if the WHS should appear right away on the Live when configured right...

Does anyone have WHS and have this working with either/both the WHS Windows firewall on or the Guest account disabled?

I went to youtube, search, entered HD, it searched.
Came back with a BUNCH of files that all had HD in thier name and description.

ie. New Moon Movie Trailer - Offical (HD)
Halo 3: ODST Live Action Trailer [HD]

edit: And of course Dude Perfect - Summer Camp Edition (HD).

do you have the jpg/jpegs names the same as the movie file?

Ive only done it with MKV/AVI/TS files, but im sure it should work with isos.

try this:

quantumofsolace.iso
quantumofsolace.jpg

I hooked up the network cable nothing. Tried with USB drive(s) connected. Nothing. When using composite or component, everything just works.

While in composite/component I tried various HDMI settings... nothing. With HDMI cable plugged in, it just shows the logo at boot and then blank screen and TV sees no signal. Nada. Zilch. Argghhhh And its the weekend and WD support is prolly closed.

I think I can rule out the TV as the problem (but you never know with the HDCP, which is defective by design) as it has no problems with HDMI from BD player. I have no AVR in between: direct connection.

Wondering if anyone else had/has this problem with WDTV live???

I'm sure you already tried another HDMI cable and another HDMI input on your TV right ?

Why not try hooking it up to a friend's TV ? You don't even need to connect media or a network to try it. Just plug in the power and hdmi cables. Of course you could carry along a flash drive with a movie on it too.

You could always just log-into youtube with your PC and add all the HD videos to your play-list and play them all that way.

Thanks you all for the info on this board and just saw the ntfs support in the user's manual.

I have a Sharp AQUOS LC42D64U but still waiting to buy a blu-ray player. Now I can stop using ConvertXtoDVD to watch a mkv movie in "lame"-definition. I have ordered it on Newegg along with a Patriot Xporter XT Boost 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (reads fast) and a cheap 6ft HDMI cable. Can't wait!

I've had the WDTV Live for a few days now and thought it would be appropriate to share some thoughts. Previously, I was a big fan of the original version and while I had no complaints about it, the new WDTV Live improves on the original significantly.

Playback and interface are much faster: This one is a given, with the new chipset and expanded memory. The menus respond instantly and the difference between the two devices is clear.

Pandora and Youtube are amazing feature additions: Since both of these services were ones I used before, expanding them to the TV through this device is astounding. The interface fits perfectly and the quality is excellent. I do wish that there was a better way to get back and control the now playing music as you scroll through the menu, possibly hitting the option key to bring up the Now Playing bar at the top of the screen.

Audio codec is displayed for each track: Now I can see which track is my original DTS track and the AC3 converted version instantly on the WDTV interface rather then walk up to my receiver and look at the logo

Out of sync subtitles can be delayed or sped up in the movie: By hitting the right and left keys on the remote, the subtitles speed is changed by 100ms intervals in either direction. This is extremely helpful for the few videos that I have that experience this issue but I wish there were a way to bookmark the changed speed for future plays. Most likely though, its easier just to remux the subtitle track.

Screen doesn't fade out/in when viewing folder mode: Many had complaints about the original WDTV blacking out the screen as each folder was clicked so the Live removed that interface piece.

Arabic subtitles work: I don't think anyone else has mentioned this but while poking around the settings last night, I saw Arabic under the additional subtitles support menu. I grabbed an Arabic .srt for one of my videos and tested it out. Works perfectly.

There are many other features that make this device great but some of these minor upgrades shows that the WD team is listening and know how to improve their products.

I see no reason at all to upgrade from WDTV1 to WDTV2 as long as there is no ISO-menu support. Dumb move of WD not to integrate this function when it is in fact the most wanted feature. I'm aiming for the CinemaTube.

I finaly got it to work.
For an iso name QUANTUMOFSOLACE.iso, put an image name QUANTUMOFSOLACE.jpg close to the iso as stated in the doc.
..and the trick is to unplug/replug the local usb drive after that (?) to make them appear attached to the iso file...
It seems that the WDTV box has some strange caching mechanisms for the .jpg

I was using the network to copy the .jpg files from my PC to the drive attached to the WDTV box and the images never appeared attached to the iso. When you copy an iso file this way to the drive attached to the WDTV box, it "sees" after a while, but it does not display the corresponding .jpg file...
For that, the drive has to be plugged/unplugged...

Also when browsing iso coming from a network shared drives, the .jpg is displayed twice: once by itself and once attached to the iso file.
But this has already been reported by other users

And despite the small annoyances, this product is fantastic!!!. At least for my usage: play iso DVD/BD locally or from my network

I don't know if this was asked before but I'm interested in following.
I know that this formula applied for original WDTV:
"1080p mkv/scene releases/torrents that meet this formula will work fine:
Width x Height x ReFrames < or = 8,388,608. DTS up to 1536 bitrate is passed through HDMI/Optical out."
For instance, I've watched new Star Trek movie which did not met this formula and it was quite choppy at moments and not really watchable.
Does this formula still apply for WDTV2? Is it better hardware wise and able to play these 1080p higher quality mkv's.
If it is I will be buying it instantly.
Thanks

Tried the MKV Remux. It works to fix the choppines of the AVI files from the Bleach anime but it doesn't work for the High Def MP4 files.

Also SD looks way better on Cinematube vs WD TV Live but High Def looks terrible on cinematube vs WDTV Live.

VOLUME ON CINEMATUBE IS SOO LOW. I think WD TV LIVE does such a great job in the volume.

I have such a big dilema. Don't know which one to keep. Might as well return both and buy a Popcorn Hour c-200. What do you guys think?

Try aiming for a Form dedicated to CinemaTube .. but I am gald you cleared up that question as we were all waiting for your decision ......

Come on people lets all post what we decided to eat for lunch :-)

I searched but couldn't find a solution.

I have my Live connected to the component in on my stereo and then it goes to the RPTV.

When I switch the input to the WDTV I can see the WD logo but the screen is sort of flipping and then it goes completely blue. I can't figure it out.

HELP! Anyone.......
If WD could add a "refresh" feature so that added, deleted or edited files show up instantly without the need to unplug usb devices or rebooting the streamer.

Exactly how do you have it connected ?

Audio to your "stereo" receiver and hdmi to your rear projection TV ?

What are the makes / models of your receiver and tv ?

Thanks for the quick response.

I have the WDTV component out connected to my HK AVR 525 component in. I have the WDTV optical audio out connected to an audio in on the HK AVR 525. The monitor out of the HK AVR 525 goes to the Mits WS-65819 RPTV. NOTE: It works fine with the DVD player (also component and optical hookups).

Mits RPTV WS-65819: http://www.audioreview.com/cat/telev...0_2726crx.aspx

Thanks!

The WD Live volume (stereo out) on video is very low for me (compared to DVD player, XBox 360, Satellite, etc.). Can't find any setting to boost this. Have to turn the TV volume WAY up. Volume level is exactly as it should be for music though.

Digital out the volume is exactly how it should be for both video and music.

Anyone else notice the low volume on video for stereo out?

I also noticed that on Music with Digital set as my output, stereo is still output (sound through RCA cable). But on video with Digital set as my output, stereo isn't output (no sound through RCA cable).
Well maybe for you its low but since I never had a media player before I just compare wd tv live vs cinematube and I have to turn the volume up to 90 (of 100) on cinematube vs 30 (of 100) in wdtv for a DTS downmix video and regular video.

Most wanted by who? MOST bought it to play movies, not special features.

I, personally, would rather not have it. If I wanted to watch the special features, I would just throw the DVD in. What I would like to see instead is chapter support for iso's.
