I have decided I will return the WDTV Live. I really want to like it. Even with the cheapo dated interface. But I can't get 1080MKV to play smoothly. And that was the main reason I purchased it.
I can see the various networked shares without a problem. It plays streamed from my NAS or Mac or Windows PC. But a couple of minutes in, it gets choppy and I lose sound. This is all over a 100Mbps wired ethernet connection. Even had issues with standard def stuff that my modded original Xbox with XBMC is able to run silky smooth.
When the same media is copied to a local USB HD and plugged into the WDTV directly, it does a lot better. But still occassionally stutter. I am connected via HDMI to a LCDTV. I even tried forcing HDMI 1080P@60, @24, etc. But none of the mode improved the issue any. Seems like there's a lot of power in the little box, but the software is holding it back.
So for my purposes, the WDTV Live doesn't cut it. I will have to wait for a nice XMBC solution.
