Wow, looking at the massive amount of people having a new brick, it's gonna be Black Friday a week late for WD Tech Support. They should never deploy new software at the end of the work week, and who knows if they even tested it at a smaller scale and instead went general right away. Stoopid.

I can't believe that... Mine is bricked too !!
They better pay for the @#^%#@^#@ shipping both way ! I got mine 7 days ago.. I was going to buy the patriot and I chosed the WDTV LIVE cause of the reputation of the first one, now I regret.. they don't even release firmware often and when they release one.. it's a %@#%@ killing Firmware !

I'm so desappointed now by WD.

Add me to the list.
One more brick in the wall.

Now its a good time to switch allegiances.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2967&page=9999

Buyers should have done their research first before purchasing and could have found out about WD TV poor firmware support.

i admit, almost bought it because of its small compact design ("the ipod factor").

Prime directives of a buyer : -

no 1 - Do your homework, never trust a salesman word - google, google, google (ie, user experience )

no 2 - "Aint broke, dont fix it" it's not necessary to update firmware unless its to resolve an issue with your hardware. Even so, updating firmware should be a last resort.

I've used Subtitle Creator to make a transparent background but no matter what transparency value is assigned, the background is opaque (see attachment), funny how that works.

It depends on what format you use (text based, image based) and whether they are external or internal (MKV/ISO):

srt internal/external: transparent outline, hardly readable
idx/sub external: fine
idx/sub internal ISO: fine
idx/sub internal MKV: messed up

EDIT: Forgot to mention that updating to 1.01.12 via Internet (LAN) worked flawlessly for me.

lol you guys should have updated it with the homebrew firmware.. I guess b-rad actually tests his firmware out rather than just releasing it blindly to people.. B-rad ftw!
is it safe to update to the new firmware right now? i guess not?

So I see that WD firmwares are even buggier as before!

Ridiculous to see that some blame the users for updating their player... how strong is your love for WD?!

I believe that WD should consider one of 2 things:

1: Hire professional staff for firmware developement

2: Drop the media player market

Never in my life I've seen so many complaints about a media player... there are network bugs, firmware bugs, subs bugs, etc!
I strongly believe that WD devs don't test their firmwares before release it to public... more than once they said they solved something that it's still not fixed.

Oh well...

same problem here :S really ridiculous

Bricked mine too...
Just updated to 1.0.12 and it's bricked now.

Btw... I attached a usb stick with the firmware on it but nothing happens.
Does anybody have a solution yet?

Mine updated OK. Has anyone with bricked tried to revert to old firmware?

is everyone who is getting their units bricked updating via the network? has anybody done a USB-based install from the get-go and had their WDTV Live bricked?

I got the very same screen

on hard resetting the player after flashing a firmware with my revised german UI file failed and noone bothered to give any tips on what might have went wrong.

So I

- put the original .11 back on a clean USB stick
- verified it with an md5
- disconnected the Live from power
- attached the stick
- kept pressing the hard reset button with an unfolded paper clip
- attached power to the Live

and the old firmware got flashed and the Live worked again.

Does this method work for any of you who bricked their Live with the .12 update?

Did mine over network, for the first and only time.

Good luck, let us know.

i guess from now on, there wont be frequent f/w updates...

when is the audio stutter with mp4s going to be fixed? that is a priority for me since 95% of my media is in that format

I have two units, one updated fine... The second one is a Brick.

Wrote WD yesterday still waiting for an answer. The unit that bricked was on 1.01.11 - the other I don't know as I just bought it and never looked.

Very disapointed so far!

Don't be stupid - this is clearly an unfortunate accident. They are not going to ruin peoples devices on purpose.

also, on wdtvhd someone said they had managed to return from the brick state by unplugging it all and reverting to the old firmware on a usb stick - so apparently that can work for some people.
Bricked as well...

Really very disappointing. Never had these issues with a modded Xbox and XBMC which in itself is sad.

I think that he didn't meant to say that WD ruined devices on purpose... he was just saying that WD firmware support is mediocre! And in fact... it is!

I don't have any "allegience" to those who manufacture my A/V devices. I like my WDTV Live and have no plans to switch, though I'm surely not going to upgrade its firmware at this point.

This is a bit of a black eye for WD, though. I feel very sorry for those who ended up with bricked units; we will all be watching to see how WD handles this.
Ok, i called the support. They told me the firmware is corrupted, so it broke the unit, and it could not be recovered. I supected they may have different copies of firmware out there, and most of them are corrupted, but few of them are good, so that's why some people have no issue.
Anyway, I did the advance RMA, so they are going to send me a new unit within 3 to 5 business day, and i have 30 days to return the brick.

Yeah, I tried the same. (And it doesn't separate individual lines, which I don't like)

I tried extracting the sub from an mkv made by makemkv, and it seemed all colors of the font were black - perhaps thats why the look weird. Its ignoring the background color.

However i noticed you can have an mkv with embedded subs AND add a srt subtitle outside the file - the srt just shows up in the list - so thats nice.

Looks like I'm one of the lucky ones.

Did the firmware update straight from the net and it worked fine.

I did not have any USB storeage attached to the WDTV Live at the time.

Could this have made a difference?

Lt. Dang
