So, thanks for the reminder! And thanks for the nudges to not give up so easily, Hagfish. Creating my own moviesheets is not too terribly hard.

Athough there were no thumbnails at the bottom. It just showed the first movie sheet of the three samples that I had on the USB flash drive, and I could only see the other two by hitting the skip or next button. I thought there were supposed to be some thumbnails that you could scroll along the bottom.

Anyway, I can stop being a whiney hiney now.

"Sheet" moviesheets should get you the thumbnails scrolling on the bottom (which I use); or "Wall" (icon along the side)

Also...if the moviesheets ever disappear..I follow this guide (linksheets section) to get them back.

http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=5831.0

Ultimately, moviesheets loading from my NAS slowed down the remote response to the point where I am considering loading them onto a thumbdrive.

There's also the issue of SMB (Microsoft networking) not being as efficient as Linux networking, NFS.

I use network shares with my bluray rips and they stream perfectly. I do use a gigabit network.

Like mbryanr said- you should definitely see thumbs in sheet mode which is what you're using a I believe.. You should have 2 jpgs for each movie. i.e.
Gigli.jpg and Gigli.mkv_sheet.jpg.

You should have the thumbs- keep tryin

I just flashed with b-rad firmware but now I need to figure out how to start using nfs for my media shares and hope that enables smooth playback of my high bit rate movies. Do I follow this guide? Is there a better one?

I used xmount (persistent after reboots by adding xmount command to net.mounts) -- I use it to connect to a freenas with a smb share and it works great.. I haven't encountered any stuttering with any movies (high bitrate included).. Dunno if it has anything to do with the fact that its freenas/smb rather than true windows/smb- but no complaints here..

edit: to clarify- this adds my freenas share to "local disks" rather than network shares- not sure if this has any effect on my movies not stuttering

I'm using B-RAD's WDLXTV-Live-0.4.2.0 firmware, so I'm not sure it this works on the stock firmware or not, but I've discovered that when the subtitles are on the screen, you can tap the up or down arrow to reposition them up or down on the screen.

I hope this isn't to dumb of a question but when I connect the WDTV to my receiver via the component connection and I go into Audio/Video in System set up, Video Output says composite.

It's weird because if I choose component, I get a nothing on the TV and need to reset.

I'm not exactly sure where the problems lie. I've tested TX100 TCP throughput with various tools in the past and found most cards and switches can achieve 70 to 90 Mb/s. But rates vary depending on the size of the transfer requests. The same files that cause the WDTV Live problems play fine from PC to PC (both Windows). Some people report problems with SMB but not with NFS (via b-rad's mod firmware). And, of course, some people are reporting no problems with 50 Mb/s videos over SMB. So it's probably a combination of factors.

So essentially the answer is clear as mud!

Has anyone been able to get dvd/blu-ray cover art to work with windows media player as a media server?

It's less noticeable on less high bit rate content but on higher file size 1080p mkv's, playback via shares will start to stutter greatly for me and audio will completely cut out. Playing same movie from media sharing option plays fine. Is there any ryme or reason for this? I don't remember reading anything about this.

This is well known.

IIRC one of the betas added this functionality: up/down changes position (only on text subs?), left/right syncs them to audio. However, it's no use as long as WD doesn't fix the pointless transparent outline introduced with the LIVE:

Can this player play Dolby True HD, DTS-HD/MA off of Blue Ray ISO ripps from a USB hard drive? I am about to start ripping B.R. to ISO when my new B.R. drive for computer comes in in the next day or two.

Thanks,

I have used Handbrake to encode all of my DVDs for AppleTV, which I use on my 720p TV in the family room. Depending on when I encoded them, my movies are either .mp4 or .m4v. I also use MetaX to embed movie posters, genres, actors, chapters, etc. Now I'm looking to add a media player to another room which has an old CRT television.

1. Can I use the WD TV Live to play my mp4/m4v encoded movies from a network share? (I've seen posts about mp4 but not a lot about m4v).
2. Will the WD TV Live use meta data (images, genres, actors, chapters, etc.) during browsing and playback?
3. I've heard the picture quality through the composite video is bad. Is that compared to the HD outputs, or compared to other 480i sources? In other words, is it worse than a DVD player connected via composite?

Any help is appreciated.

Yeah its very user hostile. Its not Apple, its literally Linux, and you gotta learn if you want to use this device to do that.

I have ripped two blue rays to ISO with no compression I am having problems with audio. It starts out fine for about one min. then the audio drops out. Do you guys think its the WDTV or the external hard drive hooked up usb? I would have thought that USB 2.0 would have been able to keep up.I know that thats a lot of data being moved.
Hard drive is W.D. MY BOOK 5400 rpm.,do you think a 7200 rmp hd. make a diff ?

Thanks for input.
Mine usually plays the BD ISO's fine on the USB drive, I have issues trying to play them off the network sometimes. Last time the network wasn't fast enough I finally unplugged it and let it powercycle and boot, then it was able to crank down the movies just fine and had around 10 mbs transfers, before it was lucky to do 1.
I spose depending on the drive it could be either though you might want to try the power cycle thing just in case and play with different programs to make the ISO's to see if it likes another one better.
There's a lot going on with some things it tries to play so you might also want to try a movie only ISO with just one audio stream and see if that helps.

Thanks dartman,

Do you think that going to mkv would make a diff? I have no problems with dvd iso ripps, but I know we are talking about 5 to 8 gig files vs. 25 g.b.As you can tell I am kind of new to this.I am using DVD FAB and useing just Main movie so I get just one large file. You guys have been a lot of help so far.

I might know what I was doing wrong, I might have been putting audio in that this player cant support. This stuff takes a lot of playing with to get it right.

DVD iso with menus is fabulous! I wish we could do bd iso menu too, or at least chapters or audio choice?

I'm still trying to get my NFS shares going with this tutorial: http://mrlazy.wordpress.com/2009/08/...using-hanewin/
In step 11 in putty I type xmount 192.168.1.64:/MOVIES MOVIES nfs
I got no response like I'm supposed to; Step 12 I type mount -t nfs in next step but I get no response when it was supposed to show me my files. I open NFS server and confirmed there were no entries in Mounts tab that this cmd was supposed to create. In haneWIN NFS Server I can see my /MOVIES file in exports tab. I clicked edit exports file and notepad comes up and shows E:\\MOVIES -name:MOVIES.
I have confirmed the file MOVIES file is in my root E directory in my PC so what's wrong? I also turned off windows firewall.

I can play BD movie only rips with the DTS track fine now over the network or USB, but I've been using Image burn or BD rebuilder mainly for my rips.
I played around with a few setups and those seem to work well as long as you have a good decrypter like anydvd to go with them.
I don't know if MKV would be better, I'd just make sure you have enough room and try your ideas and see what works best for you then stick with it.
I capture a lot of HDTV in TP then edit and convert it with videoredo into MPG files and they play really nicely with full HD and up to 5.1 audio.
The thread here about how to make network shares work in win7 worked nicely for me and there should be a pointer to it for those that are having problems.

1. I strongly recommend that you connect to the Live with telnet (search http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?board=14.0 for "putty" on how to do that). With telnet you get instant feedback if the drive/folder is mounted or not (it responds with a specific error).
If telnet works fine, you can then add the same command line to the net.mounts file (comes with B-rad's firmware), and copy that to the root of the hard drive that boots with the Live, so that it is mounted everytime.

2. You need a hard drive/usb flash memory connected to the Live for the NFS mounts to show up. You will see the mounted drive/folder in that USB in the Live menus (not in network shares or media servers).

3. It's pretty straightforward (if you do it once). This post really helped me:

I have a question regarding connecting headphones to a WDTV Live.

Heres the thing. I live in a apartment and late at night every little tiny but of volume can be heard on the other apartments and ive been told multiple times to take the volume down. However I was thinking of watching my movies with headphones.

Ok, how can I do this using the WDTV Live. My TV doesnt have a headphone out. The only out of my TV is optical out and its being used.

I was thinking if I did the following setup it would work.

use the AV out of the WDTV ->> female 2 RCA to 1 3.5 Male aux headphone ---> stereo female-female coupler -> connect headphones

The thing is, im pretty sure this is going to work, but HERES THE PROBLEM,

As soon as I was about to order, I asked myself how am I going to switch up and down the volume, I have no IDEA. Can someone please shed me some light on this or any better recomendation.

Also my wdtv is hooked to a receiver via hdmi then via hdmi to my tv.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Just add an inexpensive inline headphone volume control between the coupler and the headphones. For example the Koss VC20, available on Amazon.

perfect!

any other idea on how to use the less cables possible to connect a headphone to the wdtv live? Im lpanning on doing my whole order through monoprice so I have to deal with the cables provided there.

I've given up on trying to get NFS shares to work for now. I went back to official WD firmware. And to my eyes movies playback looks a little smoother with WD firmware as apposed to brad's. Also FF function seems to be more reliable and stable on official WD firmware. Maybe I'll try B-rads again on his next version. What I do like about media server option is I click all video, this compiles all video from both my harddrives onto a single list. One key feature missing from media server playback option is the ability to sort by date instead of by name. Anyway to enable this? I'm using media server within my W7.
