Western Digital - WD TV Live Media Player (WDTV2) - Page 229

I just bought a new WDTV Live Plus. When I connected to the Internet, it first updated to 1.04.?? and then 1.06.16B. Everything I've tried seems to work OK, including Internet sources - NetFlix and YouTube. But I was really disappointed in the picture quality for videos on my USB drive, especially when there was a lot of quick movement. It wasn't nearly as good as my old Phillips DVD player which supports Divx & USB connected drive.

Then I saw in this and another forum that there's been a problem with the auto framerate function. So I forced the HDMI resolution to be 720p 60Hz. The picture improved dramatically. So the problem is still in the latest FW release.

I have mine set on 1080p 60Hz and all my files (SD, 720p, or 1080p) looks great. I have a 50" Pansonic Viera S2 plasma. It has no problem up converting.

Does it maintain that setting?

I set mine on 1080p 60Hz and it seems to randomly change the setting itself back to 720p.

It looks like you are using B-Rad's custom software. You may have better luck posting your question on his forum.

No - I'm using the factory firmware.

Yes, my settings stays the same. Do you unplug your unit? That may reset it to factory default setting if the power to the unit is interrupted.

I keep mine plugged in all the time. I'm guessing it goes on "standby mode" when I press the power button on the remote. Because boot up time is fast when I turn it back on. I just need to give it a few seconds for it to connect back on to my wifi network. I also give it a static IP, subnet, DNS, gateway.

Guys, I have a couple of WD TV Live units and just tried to look at some videos I've downloaded (music video clips) from you tube in mp3 and flv format.

Apparently it doesn't read them. What are my options and if converting them all is one option, which file format should I go with and what settings? I plan on using Any VIdeo Converter since it's free AND, I DO like it. I COULD buy another unit if available that does it all but I DO like the WD TV compared to the Iomega ScreenPlay which totally sucked and their support sucked too. I had several units replaced by the way and never managed to get one that worked.

Thanks

George

Try any of these:

AVI, MP4, WMV, MKV, MPEG

Ok, so just convert them all to AVI's?

Thanks

AVI is a supported format.
Thanks, I knew that but is it a good format for video clips such as music clips or is there a better format? I LIKE the format 'cause it's so big these days that it seems that everything reads it but just thought I'd ask.

The other question was, is there anything out that there that reads the other formats/all formats that is easy to use like the WD and has a good UI?

Thanks

No, I never unplug mine. Furthermore, the change always happens while I'm watching a video. I'll notice the picture isn't quite as good as it was, go check and almost always, the setting has changed.

Oh wow! It changes the settings while you're watching a vid That is odd.

Not really. I've seen a lot of complaints about it on the WDC Community forum.

I think avi is a dying format, I would suggest mkv.

Well the Boxee Box plays flv, not sure if it does one or two more formats then the WDTV Live - it has a UI - whether its good or not depends how much you like to click.
And it has a few bugs, investigate before buying.
I'm good then. I like my WD's

Damn, AVI is already dying?

Does most everything play MKV these days and which one is smaller/file size wise?

MKV is just a container, much like M4V. Just about everything can play MKV (except, I think, AppleTV).
Sweet, I'll stick with the WD then. I like'em. Is MKV smaller than AVI in format?
If select the 12 bit option in settings i get like sparkles in the screen

Neither are format's, they are containers that house the audio/video files. When someone says use MKV over AVI they typically mean use h.264 for the video and AC3/DTS for the audio.

Not for SD material, it isn't. People still encode to xvid in AVI containers.

No point anyway, there's no 12 bit material out there yet.

I updated Saturday night to the newest Live firmware that came out last week, and the aspect ratio bug that was introduced in the prior firmware has been fixed. Haven't tried out the "Games" section yet.

Under what circumstances are the Track Forward / Backward buttons supposed to work?
Hooked my WDTV Live to the main set this week-end as the Boxee Box fan died...reminded me what I disliked about the WDTV gui. Especially when connected to an unRAID and Synology server, navigating to the network share...ugh. It even picks up hidden shares.

Playback was nice though.

Are you referring to the next/previous chapter buttons?
I suppose so. They don't work in DVD isos or MKVs with chapters. The only use I have found is in the list of files, they'll skip a page of files, and when fast-forwarding I can skip ahead 10 minutes (sweet). But never skip chapters.

I find the chapter forward and back buttons work fine for me with DVD.iso files. I have full-disk rips of TV series and within the episodes the chapter skip buttons do as they are supposed to and skip to chapter points.

Same thing here............

They do not work with my MKV's, although I rarely use that container.

For mkv's chapters you have to go through Option button and Chapters.
