super-simple receiver for only one input?

Hi,
I have a HTPC that does everything. My requirements for a receiver are:
  1. one S/PDIF or optical in (HDMI audio in would work, too)
  2. 5.1 output (doesn't have to be huge power, using an Energy Take classic system)
  3. Dolby Digital and DTS decoding

I don't mind passing the video straight from PC to TV, so no video features at all are needed, though I could do HDMI passthrough. In that case it would need to pass 1080p/24 correctly. The PC does my music, movies, and TV, so I really don't need a huge box with a thousand inputs.

Is there anything simple like that on the market that I could get for less than $200?

Currently I'm looking at refurbished Harman kardon stuff on ebay, but it all seems like overkill.

Many thanks.

For cheap, just buy an older used AVR from craigslist, yard sale, thrift store, etc. Should be able to get something for $50-75 that does what you want.

As far as something simple, maybe a used "receiver" from a HTIB solution that someone wants to sell. They usually have minimal inputs and a smaller footprint.

You are an ideal candidate for an older used receiver being cast off by somebody upgrading to HDMI. There are lots of great options on eBay for $50 or less.

Thanks everybody for your thoughts. I ended up getting a JVC RX-D206B for only $40 from somebody I found on craigslist. Its a digital amp, which makes it much smaller and lighter, and it's fairly simple, but hopefully it'll sound good.

Seems to me people had positive comments on that model. Long as it's in working order, you should be happy with it.
