The landscapes were the definite standout of this transfer, indeed.
There is noticeable DNR in certain scenes, make no mistake, but the pros far outweigh the cons here.
Also, the DTS-HD soundtrack is one of the finest in my collection. The room was litterally shaking during the opening battle scene, while the mid-levels were getting quite the workout as well.
$17.95 after a $10 rebate if you own the dvd is a nice bonus as well. I didn't see a coupon for buying Braveheart and Gladiator together though.
PQ - 4.25/5
AQ - 5/5
My opinion of course.
After having skipped around a bit with mine, I kinda agree with most of this (except perhaps your PQ grade, a bit generous). (=
But anyway, certainly was not the (what I and some lol'd at) "GARBAGE" that many were pushing. Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, if you think this is garbage, more power to ya, tis your opinion, but "garbage" smacks of getting a lil' emotional over one of our fave flicks that we ALL wanted to be perf.
Like you, leem, I also immediately noticed the color (Panny BD30, 61" LED 1080p/24, pro calibrated) like I've never seen before in this movie (never having seen anything but the first dvd), the burgandy's, golds and greens of the apparel caught my eye right away! Just certain things I noticed that I never did before. Some scenes did not impress as much as others however, only looking a tad better than dvd, but then at other spots (not the extended stuff) I was like, yep, now that is WAY better than the dvd.
Same thing with the audio - I heard some things I've NEVER noticed before, like the scene where he comes out of the tunnel alone to take on several fighters, you can hear their breathing under the helmets so clearly, as if you're in the pit with them, made me grin. I didn't fire up my sub so I can't comment on LFE, just saying, the added clarity to the audio is quite apparent to my ears.
Don't get me wrong, I'm with the majority, would LOVE a PRIMO version of this someday and will gladly buy again, but until then, this is definitely better than what I had. So, yeah, I'll enjoy it, and no, "better than dvd" is not good enough when we know what the format is capable of, but when MANY of my purchases ARE far beyond, well, once in a while "better than" will have to do...even if they duped us with the hyped "Scraphire" tag.
