Mitsubishi HC6800 LCD HD Projector (30,000:1 on/off) - Page 8

Probably one of the most respected video projector reviewers, Thomas J Norton (late of Stereophile Guide To Home Theater) always reviews projectors with a 84" diagonal screen.

Remember, even a 7 foot diagonal screen has something like 4 times the viewing area of a 50" plasma!

However, to each his own...

As a HC6500 owner, I can't justify getting the 6800 right now, but a nat'l av chain is running an ad for the 6800 with a 92" screen for a great price.....so all you fence sitters it is time to jump! I've got over 1500 hours with great colors, focus and no problems. Mitsubishi seems to be making a very reliable product....very few problems reported in the 5500,6500 and 6800 threads.

I finally got an old Toshiba DVD player connected to my reciever and on to the PJ at 480i, letting the PJ do all of the processing. In honor of halloween, we watched a 1980 Horror flick "The Changeling" (good movie), the new horror movie "Midnight Movie" (excellent B-movie), the old cult classic "Evil Dead" and then last night, my wife and I watched "My Life in Ruins". We were blown away by the upconverting quality of the Mitsubishi. I think the processing in the HC6800 is a slight step up on my LG BH200, which has the Qdeo processor and does an excellent job. On "THe Changeling", which is a 1970's movie, we all immediatley noticed the quality. It was much like going to a good theater. Even the "Evil Dead", despite its cheap look and terrible focus in some scenes, was more pleasant to look at than I have ever seen it. However, on "My Life in Ruins", which we rented and has many scenic vistas from Greece, we sat in awe most of the film.

I am sure there are other PJs that perform this well, but I have never owned one. I continue to be impressed.

I'm somewhat spoiled as I own the Oppo BD-83 which outputs an upconverted 1080p signal which is about as good as it gets. I'm not sure what the 6800 does with it.

However, I can see the video processing capabilities of the 6800 on regular HDTV, and these capabilities are quite good indeed!

Not to hijack the thread, but how good is the Oppo compared to other excellent upconverters? Did you own a good one before the Oppo?

I, for one, can see the difference easily between my LG, which is considered excellent at upconversion compared to the Denon I owned which was considered great a few years ago (although only 720p/1080i).

I too have the Oppo BD-83 and it's a phenomenal Blu-Ray player. Hands down the fastest when it comes to loading movies.

It is pretty well known that as far as BD playback is concern'Their is no difference between most players as far as the the quality of the pic.Pretty much like HDMI cables. Now as far as load times 'SD DVD playback then that is different.

Correct. That is why I specifically asked about it (the Oppo) as an upconverter for SD. Until I replace my entire 1000+ DVDs with Blu Rays (which will likely never happen), SD quality remains important for me.

Larrimore...just to thank you for your evaluation and comments regarding the 6800. They were very insightfull, particularly the side by side with the epson....Also to comments from Santa which are always very good.......and others on the board....Also one of the guys with the comment "Life is short, do it now"....All you guys provided the final push I needed to jump in....I just got my 6800, although only fired it just once, since I was coming from a trip...Got it from BB New York at a very good deal based on what I heard on this board (<$2K). I made a DIY screen with a white board from Home Depot for now, until I am able to either, do a better DYI, or buy a more profesional screen.....Will report later on my impressions...thanks again, guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mariokrt64: I have 10 days before my Best Buy / Magnolia "Price Guarantee" expires. I have been trying unsuccessfully to find a BB that will sell the 6800 and anything close to an under $2K price. Please send me a PM about exactly where you purchased the 6800.

Regards,
Brian

Maybe you could scan in your receipt and forward it via Private Message. You can copy me on it too (although I got a good deal, I'd like to see if I could do a little better as well).

Glad to have you aboard!

FWIW, I would look around for a real screen. Early in my projector life, I used a white board and then a homemade screen from a cheap material. I was astonished when I found a real screen, even a cheap one, made a big difference. Now, if you get into painting with some of the available screen paints or making your own out of real screen material, you may be able to get similar quality and you can get any kind of special size you may want, but usually to do it right, the price difference is minimal if you are aiming for a standard size.

Just my $0.02

I do applaud you getting something to give you time to decide on the screen, though. That will be almost as hard a decision as the projector was!

Being a Mits HC6500 owner myself, I had a opportunity to review the HC6800 last night at my buddies house on a Elite white 100" screen. The HC6800 is a nice upgrade to my HC6500. First thing I noticed it is brighter, colors were spot on, still super quiet and razor shape. The biggest thing I noticed was the black levels have improved...not that the HC6500 was bad, but a nice improvement for sure. Just want to say Enjoy...the Mits HC6800 is a excellent choice.

How does this projector compared to HW15 ? My BB/MHT replaced the demo HW15 with HC6800. They told me this PJ is better and cheaper ?? Maybe the guy meant HW10 because he told me HW15 had been out for some months...

I don't know for sure whether yours is an HW10, but all the BBs in my area have done the same thing (replaced HW10 with Mits HC6800) for that same reason. The problem is they are still asking $3K for the HW10 they took down...given the current market, I doubt they'll get near that.

Brian-

I am a Premier Silver Best Buy member and I just got a 12% off coupon on Magnolia items. I had gotten 10% previously, but I am going to ask for the extra 2%, that is enough to buy another Blu Ray.

If you are a silver member, you could do the same, or, if not I would assume this means there are 10% coupons for this weekend.

Sounds like a winner. I still have lots of 480i content and dislike the ghosting on the Ax-100/200 that I have right now. It's gonna go bye bye for possibly the 6800, sounds like a winner for @ $2k

larrimore: Many Thanks! I'll be looking for a Best Buy coupon in my local Sunday paper.

My printer/scanner died a few weeks ago and have not replace it. Lets see if I can get to a store and scan it.

The board that I got as a screen is probably not to good. It is kind of a shiny surface and you can spot the projector beam reflection onto the screen (its not matte). Maybe that's a reason why I feel not getting the blacks/contrast I expected, although I have not made many adjustments (tried input of your calibration parameters, need to double check). The picture looks sharp, but kind of white...ish...as if the brightness level may be washing it out.....can you comment....this is my first PJ, so I am not sure what I may be doing wrong...(besides the screen material)

What screen are you using now (brand/size/gain)???Did you considered/tested the DaLite High Power??? I enjoy a bright picture and my viewing angle is not to wide. I also plan to have the PJ shelf mounted, which may meet the "High Power" criteria. I would like to target a 110" diagonal size.

That's probably not going to work! I have seen a picture on a board like that and that is a disaster. Try projecting on a wall instead if you have a white one, or hang up a white sheet.

I use a 1.0 gain matte white screen- nothing fancy. I have never had an issue with brightness (light controlled room), so I have never used a high power screen.

Just wondering since there's all this talk about Magnolia and Bestbuy. If maybe a store or a local dealer around might have the Panasonic AE 4000 and/or the Mitsubishi HC6800 on display somewhere. I love my HC5000 but have been looking for upgrade possibilities.

I really have to ask this question given the last several posts.

Given the money it takes to own a 6800, I can't understand why anyone would compromise the picture quality by not buying a screen built for this purpose, given that it costs just a fraction of what the projector costs.

I myself have a 92" VUTEC pull-down screen (Gain 1.0) which produces a wonderful picture for the money (I paid about $325). I think you can get a fixed screen for probably less than $300.

I've seen several examples of home-made screens and IMHO the picture quality is compromised.

Just my $.02

I plan to eventually ($$$$) buy a screen. I just wanted to be able to test the pj somewhere before the 30 days return policy, just in case. I expected my current "screen" set up not to be up to requirements. I agree, that buying a $2000+ projector and not a suitable screen is dumb, to say the least.
That makes sense

I sure hope you end up keeping the 6800. Front Projection systems are hard to give up once you own one!

Actually, there are 92" pull downs all over that well-known auction site for <$150.

Does anyone know the native contrast of this projector? For those that own this projector, how is the shadow detail in dark scenes? Do details get crushed in dark scenes?

A big thank you to larrimore and mariokrt64:

I received a 10% off coupon in my email for Best Buy today. I just got back from my local store with a 10% reduction in my pocket! Thanks for your help in this regard.

As far as native contrast levels; IMHO the blacks are great and details are not crushed. However, my room has some ambient light so I'm not the best person to comment on this. I did own a CRT projector for 10 years so I do know what good blacks look like, and the 6800 does not leave me wanting in this regard.

I would search for some professional reviews (e.g. projectorcentral.com) for a definitive answer. I know that when Art's review is published in projectorreviews.com this topic will be discussed in length!
