Woohoo I'm all caught up and get to join in on this dead thread! lol.
Hey mariokrt64, I've pretty much followed your entire progress on here. You were talking about how you were unhappy with the blacks, that you even wanted to sell your projector. How did you feel about it after you got the screen, and then again after you got it professionally calibrated? Would you say the blacks are what you were hoping to get in the end? I ask because I feel like I'm where you were at in the beginning, disappointed in the black levels.
I feel like I got a steal with this projector, but I'm still open to the Epson 8350. I'm probably going to get one tomorrow and compare the two.
I never got to be fully satisfied with the black levels, even after purchasing a screen (inexpensive Elite Silverscreen 1.8 gain)...Never got it professionally calibrated either...I was able to play with the settings myself and got it to project better, though.....Probably with a professional calibration will get even better...
I have to say that with some material this projector looks very good...for example, watching King Kong on HD DVD the imaged looked beautiful to my taste...same with the Planet Earth Series..THe Matrix..and others....There was a movie on HDNet with Elijah Wood (Cambridge Murders or so?) that the picture looks beautiful, as well..So I have to think that with good contrast material it displays very good..., especially if it does not have too dark images.....I never got the chance to test it vs. the Epson's or Panny, to tell.....Watching sports such as MLB or NBA is very good as well...
On the other hand, the PJ has been essentially maintenance free, besides cleaning the filter a few times...I have read a few bad stories from Epson's and Panny's, that reports several problems with these PJ's....even having to return them several times....I don't think I would put up with that kind of quality on those units...Fortunately, apparently Espson has a good customer service and return policy, I heard. The price you got for the Mitsu is very good..I paid about $2k for mine, almost two years ago....I have read, that for the price you paid, the Mitsu should provide better black levels than the competition, at that price level......Is the one you got new...or a floor unit????
If you want to go with the Epson, I have seen offers for the HC8700 that includes a free lamp.....although for close to $2k. This one has even black levels, I read.
This was my first projector so I am just a novice at this..just trying to provide you with my honest, novice, assesement..
Hope it helps you....
