'Bored to Death' on HBO HD - Premiering 9/20/09

I saw a teaser today for the new HBO series Bored to death, starring Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, and Zach Galifianakis. The series starts next month.

I thought the teaser was very promising. Schwartzman is a good young actor and you simply can't beat Ted Danson, of Cheers and Damages fame, or Zach Galifianakis, who stole the show in Hangover. This series has a chance to be very good.

Thanks for making the thread.
I just watched the 41 second trailer on HBO's website.
I will be watching this.

I really liked this show. The music was interesting too, different.

I was actually bored to death watching this!

I thought it wasn't too bad. Not too sure that 30 minutes is enough time for any sort of mystery solving, assuming they intend to solve one mystery per show.

I'd be surprised if this survives another season. It has that Wes Anderson indie-vibe running through it and Jason Schwartzman isn't a mainstream leading man choice.

When Zach Galifianakis is the most "regular" thing in the show then there might be an problem. He was also underused in this episode.

There were a couple of things I laughed at (the "Raid on Entebbe" discussion being one) so I'll watch next week and see if they up the detective-noir stakes.

I agree that the first episode was a little disappointing, although a couple of things made me laugh. I agree that the Raid on Entebbe riff was funny. The funniest thing in the whole episode to me, though, happened in the first 30 seconds. When one of the beefcake Israeli movers asked Jonathan, "Are you one of those self-hating New York Jews," Jonathan looked at the guy for a beat and then slowly nodded yes. Unfortunately, it was mostly downhill from there.

Strange show. My wife and I will almost always give any new show at least three episodes to decide whether it is a keeper or not - and sometimes longer with a cable show. This one, though, was just so bad for us that we deleted the PVR series recording after the first episode. There really wasn't anything in it to make us want to come back. Oh well, on to the next for us!

instant season delete.

Yes, not good. Not good at all.

that was Jason Schwartzman? I thought it was the non blonde Wilson brother.

Lots of "hate" towards this show
I agree that solving a 'mystery crime' in 30 minutes is a little far fetched.
The premise of a P.I. is a little old, sort of reminds me of the old show "Hack"

I for one, will be watching this series

If I had listened to you last week I would have saved the boring half hour I wasted on the second episode last night. The show seems to me to be a series of random scenes, which don't add up to a show that is funny. This week was the end of it for me.

This past week's episode titled "The Alanon Case' was good.
The herpes and stalking stories was ok. The colonic doctor was funny.

It had some amusing moments. Mostly those involving Zach G. at the colonic and on the train, but I think the problem with this show is Jason Schwartzman. He just can't carry this show when he's on his own.

His laid back and timid personality works okay in movies because mostly he's sharing scenes with other more lively personalities. When he's alone it's like watching someone sleepwalk.

And holy crap I hate his hair. It just annoys me looking at it. It's like watching a Monkees tribute band member.

Yeah, I was not going to give this show a second look but with the new recently added HBO HD on demand with FIOS I decided to give it another shot and was pleasantly surprised. Much better than the first episode but I don't know if it can maintain momentum using the same storyline each week but I will continue to watch now and see where it goes from here.

Wow, Ted Danson's girlfriend du jour Miriam was pretty easy on the eyes!!!

Although I promised myself that I would drop the show after last week's episode, I ended up watching the third episode because I had forgotten my promise. I'm glad I did forget. I thought that this week's show really worked. Jonathan's liaison with the underage daughter of the shrink was very funny, despite being derivative of Californication, where the writers did the same thing. I thought the high point of the show was Jonathan's scene with the snarky shrink, who was a very funny fellow. It appears the show may have a chance. I am even going to go back and watch last week's episode again. As usual, Ted Danson was terrific as the pathologically self absorbed but charming George Christopher was hysterical. Jim Jarmusch, as a parody of himself, was also a lot of fun

Wait there has been 3 episodes? I thought the one with the psychiatrist was the second ep. I watched the pilot with the gf leaving him and him doing his first case.

Anyways, like the psychiatrist episode. This show has some beautiful locations, like inside that club. Really good use of HD. I think there were some good night scenes in the first episode, around the Al Anon place.

And I presume they're filming in location in NY and Brooklyn? Lot of potential for scenic backdrops. Sex and the City was filmed in NY but I don't recall too many establishing, wide angle shots. Plus it wasn't in HD.

Ugly Betty has some beautiful shots of Manhattan.

everything in this week's ep worked for me. maybe they're better off not doing a "case".

oh, and don't worry about offending my delicate sensibility with gratuitous nudity!

I feel the same way. Like I said in my previous post I didn't think the show could sustain momentum if it was the same storyline every week and this episode did indeed get away from that. I'm starting to enjoy this series and hope it continues to improve.

She was very nice.
Nice to see an Oliver Platt appearance. The whole 16 year old and script storyline was funny. No case this week, as another has mentioned.

Now I know why there has been no activity in this thread recently, just finished watching the 4th and 5th episodes and what more can I say than awful, just awful! I'm Done!
I actually thought the last episode was quite funny. The characters are growing on me.

Also, I appreciate HBO giving us a comedy that doesnt include gratuitous sex or shock comedy.

I guess to each his own.

I just found this thread and I though, hmm... title sounds like a hit, then I see the comment. Guess I won't bother. lol

Just caught the episode "The Case of the Beautiful Blackmailer".
It was good. Lots of disapproval of this show. It's not the best, but it's OK. (IMO)
I don't post in this thread because nobody else will post either

Show was funny.
This episodes seem to be hit or miss. There's some funny stuff here and there and a couple episodes aren't that bad. I won't be the least bit surprised if there's no second season. Actually, I'd be surprised is there is a second season.

Depends on whether Curb Your Enthusiasm is getting big ratings.

Hung benefitted from strong ratings for True Blood and got renewed. That show took awhile to build up, as Bored to Death appears to be doing (although they only have 2 eps. left).

Both CYE and Bored were funny this week.
